Jerusalem's ancient walls unveiled

Archaeologists in Jerusalem have given a first glimpse of what they say is a newly-exposed section of the city walls built 2,100 years ago.

The walls were first located through tunnels by 19th Century researchers, whose beer bottles were also found.

"The fact that after 2,100 years the remains of the wall were preserved to a height of three meters is amazing," he said.

The researchers believe the walls show the ancient city's boundaries when it was at its largest, with a circumference of 6km, compared to the 4km of walling surrounding what is now the Old City.

The researchers also found a range of artefacts from before and after the Second Temple period, including female fertility figures from the early Israelites who, according to the Bible, were prohibited from worshipping idols.

African-American girls were twice as likely to be beaten as their white counterparts

in Texas and Mississippi children ranging in age from 3 to 19 years old are routinely physically punished for minor infractions such as chewing gum, talking back to a teacher, or violating the dress code, as well as for more serious transgressions such as fighting

Students with mental and physical disabilities are also punished at disproportionate rates

The report documents several cases in which children were beaten to the point of serious injury. Since educators who beat children have immunity under law from assault proceedings, parents who try to pursue justice for injured children encounter resistance from police, district attorneys, and courts

Parents also face enormous

obstacles in trying to prevent physical punishment of their children.

An arteriogram was performed and reveal a systemic arterial supply to the mass with pulmonary venous drainage. The mass was resected and determined to be an intralobar bronchopulmonary sequestration.

Here's a trick to make a rubber hand come to life. Hide your right hand under a cloth and stick the rubber hand where your right hand should be. Now have someone stroke your right hand and the fake hand at the same time. Before you know it, you'll begin to "feel" sensation in the rubber hand. But what happens to your real right hand? New research suggests that your body begins to disown it.

Psychologists have used the rubber-hand illusion for years to study how people perceive body boundaries. How, for example, does your brain know where you stop and a bicycle begins? Brain scans reveal that the premotor cortex, the part of the brain that integrates vision and touch, helps the body adopt the rubber hand, but no one had looked at what was going on with the hidden, real hand.

Struggling against the waves, this polar bear faces almost certain death after becoming lost at sea in the Arctic.

It is one of a group of nine to have plunged into the ocean after the ice float they lived on melted.

The bears were spotted miles from their normal hunting ground by U.S. government oil survey scientists flying over Alaska's Chukchi Sea.

They said the creatures' homing instinct has sent them north towards the edge of the polar cap instead of 60 miles south towards the nearest land.

Yesterday, researchers also warned they feared the annual ice-melt has passed its 'tipping point', where not enough freezes each winter to make up for the previous summer's melt.

'We thought it was slowing this year, but it’s suddenly sped up instead.'

Experts with WWF, the World Wide Fund for Nature, fear the bears can’t make it.

Polar bears are strong swimmers but would not be able to make it that far.

ST. PAUL, Minn. — On the weekend before the Republican National Convention, law enforcement agencies detained dozens of people and issued a series of search warrants aimed at groups believed to be organizing demonstrations while delegates and Republican officials are in town.

Police released one person at a time from a protest-planning headquarters where people were detained in St. Paul on Friday night.

On Friday night the Ramsey County sheriff's department, accompanied by the St. Paul police, detained people inside a building here that was being used as a headquarters to plan protests.

“They handcuffed all of us,” said Sonia Silbert, 28, from Washington. “They searched everyone.”

People who had been inside said teach-ins and legal training had been conducted there, and that the space was also a repository for such items as computers and bicycles.

Police: Central shooting not random; student suspect being questioned

A Central High School student died this morning after being shot in the school cafeteria by another student, according to Knoxville police.

It was not a random shooting, he said.
