Whrrl adds features, handset support

Consumer technology solutions developer Pelago announced a series of enhancements for its Whrrl mobile social discovery service, including improved and more efficient mapping tools enabling users to plot their friends' real-time locations. According to Pelago, the "What's on My Map?" feature offers users a customized view for exploring places and events, aided by friends and other targeted filter options and promising results based solely on their specific criteria. In addition, the new Whrrl Radar feature provides information on people, places and activities beyond the view of a user's present mapped location. Users may also hide their Whirl Feed in exchange for a full-screen view of the Whrrl map. Pelago additionally announced new mobile support for Whrrl across the BlackBerry World 8830, multiple Motorola RAZR models including the V3M, v3xx, V9, v9M, and the Samsung M610.

Air NZ sees biofuel on horizon

A kilogram of weight costs about $500 a year in fuel to carry,

The catering on Air NZ's Boeing 747-400 for a long-haul flight weighs in at five tonnes, hence the plastic cups in economy. Less weight equals less fuel burn and lower carbon emissions.

Air NZ is striving to become the world's most environmentally sustainable airline by operating a new fleet of aircraft, flying on a blend of biofuel and modifying some of its jets to improve fuel efficiency.

A step change is expected by 2013, when at least 10% of the airline's total fuel requirements will come from biofuel, reducing its carbon footprint by another 400,000 tonnes a year. In the meantime most of the big jets in the fleet will be fitted with aerodynamic enhancements to make them more fuel efficient

Jatropha is considered the best option to provide commercial volumes of fuel because of its high oil content and its ability to grow readily on non-arable land, where it does not compete with food crops.

Yorba Linda attorney accused in scheme in which more than 2,800 'patients' got unneeded surgeries at Buena Park surgery center.

SANTA ANA – A Yorba Linda attorney accused in a $154 million surgery scam out of the now-closed Unity Outpatient Surgery Center in Buena Park had previously been sanctioned for similar alleged wrongdoings at other southern California clinics.

In the Unity case, Roy Chester Dickson, 60, is accused of laundering as much as $3 million and using his attorney client trust account to keep Unity open and running, according to a criminal indictment unsealed Friday.

He is charged with 106 felonies, including 30 counts of grand theft, 30 counts of insurance fraud and 30 counts of making false and fraudulent claims, as well as white collar sentencing enhancements for pocketing more than $ 3 million.

After more than 18 months of development and a slew of releases -- including five alphas, five betas and three Release Candidates -- the wait for Mozilla's Firefox 3 is nearly over.

Starting today at 10 AM Pacific Daylight Time, the Web browser will become available in its final form, introducing a myriad of new features and enhancements.

The Firefox 3 release aims to improve the Web experience for the browser's 170 million users while expanding market share even further, coming as it does months ahead of the next major release from Microsoft, Internet Explorer 8 (IE).

While Microsoft holds the top spot in browsers, Mozilla is banking that a number of improvements in Firefox 3 could put it into the lead.

Windows/Mac/Linux: The social-focused, Firefox-based web browser Flock has opened up a 2.0 beta for early adopters and helpful testers. The major "feature," at least this early in the development, is that Flock 2.0 incorporates all the memory use, performance, and other features and enhancements from the nearly-here Firefox 3, while keeping all the nifty social networking/Gmail/blogging integration features that Jason outlined in his screenshot tour of Flock 1.2. There's a few small tweaks along the lines of interface and convenience, but the developers promise more new stuff during a long development cycle. Flock 2.0 beta is a free download for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux.

It is difficult for me to imagine that there have been significant enhancements to SnagIt. I thought it had pretty much reached its zenith, but SnagIt 9 manages to improve an already superb product that captures screen shots of all kinds in a flash.

You may wonder why I am writing about desktop software in a handheld forum, but let me tell you that I don’t know how I would survive without SnagIt. It has so many applications that I use that enhance my handheld computing and writing.

Hopefully with the official release, it can be resolved. I can't wait to try it out. But like others, I have extensions that have become part of my internet life. :~)

New Firefox Web browser to be released Tuesday

A new version of the Firefox Web browser is scheduled for release Tuesday with improvements in security, speed and design.

Many of the enhancements in Firefox 3 involve bookmarks. The new version lets Web surfers add keywords, or tags, to sort bookmarks by topic. A new "Places" feature lets users quickly access sites they recently bookmarked or tagged and pages they visit frequently but haven't bookmarked.

Yahoo is the only Web service initially supported. To use rivals like Google Inc.'s Gmail and Microsoft Corp.'s Hotmail, developers of those services will have to enable that capability first.

Bangkok - Thai provincial officials have allowed a new "human zoo" featuring "long-necked" or "giraffe" women to open in Sattahip near Bangkok despite mounting international criticism of the exploitative tourism practice, media reports said Monday. The residents are part of an ethnic group whose women wear brass rings around their necks as status symbols and beauty enhancements. They are called the Padung or long-necked Karen in Thailand, but they consider those terms denigrating and call themselves Kayan

Sattahip district chief Narong Thirachantarangkoon brushed off accusations that he had allowed the establishment of a "human zoo" in his district.

"I don't think so because the Karen are willingly living here," he said. "This is better than staying in their home region and starving.

Go kick the tires and light the fires of Firefox 3 Release Candidate 1, which is now available for download at the Mozilla Firefox site. The update delivers a few aesthetic changes, as well as what Mozilla is calling major security enhancements. Users should also expect increased performance and stability for applications like Google Mail. There's an exhaustive list of known bugs to squash too, but that's par for the course with any software. [
