I am currently engaged in trying to find out where I want to go and what I want to do after I can no longer say ‘student’ when people ask me “What do you do?”. I am focusing on exploiting my degree in Computer Science, but I wouldn’t mind utilizing my English degree either. At the same time I am trying to squeeze as much fun out of my last months as a college student while keeping up with a hectic semester. Life in Zeta Chi has been a great part of my college experience, and I am nervous to see what kinds of changes are involved with becoming an alumnus. I definitely want to be one of those alumni that come back periodically and meet the new guys and see the great things (new and old) the house is doing. Oh and I’d like to be rich.

Predicting the future of the English language is rather easy, in the short term. The odds are, over the next few decades its New World dialects are going to gain increasing global dominance, accelerating the demise of thousands of less fortunate languages but at long last allowing a single advertisement to reach everybody in the world. Then after a century or two of US dominance some other geopolitical grouping will gain the ascendancy, everyone will learn Chechen or Patagonian or whatever it is, and history will continue as usual. Ho hum. But apart from that... what might the language actually look like in a thousand years time? For comparison, the English spoken at the turn of the last millennium looked like this:

Wé cildra biddaþ þé, éalá láréow, þæt þú taéce ús sprecan rihte, forþám ungelaérede wé sindon, and gewæmmodlíce we sprecaþ...

We children beg you, teacher, that you should teach us to speak correctly, because we are ignorant and we speak corruptly...

While it may be patently obvious that China and Korea will be more important 30 years from now than India and Japan, that wasn't my point. Anyone can express that opinion. What I was trying to do was to show a reason WHY that might be the case as evidenced by this CCIE data. Why shouldn't India be just as successful as China? Their populations are comparable and they both have good educational systems with large numbers of graduates. They both value science and technology. India even uses English as one of its official languages. Both have booming economies with plenty of room for growth. Well this CCIE analysis gives one empirical reason why it should be so. While the Indians are developing their IP expertise, the Chinese are developing their IP networks, simple as that.

Medieval manuscript stays in UK

An 13th Century manuscript, thought to be the earliest surviving English roll of arms, is to stay in the UK.

The British Library paid £194,184 for the Dering Roll, which depicts the coats of arms of medieval knights from Kent and Sussex.

The painted manuscript contains 324 coats-of-arms

It contains 324 coats-of-arms beginning with two of King John's illegitimate children, Richard Fitz Roy and William de Say.

Above each shield is written the knight's name.

The 17th Century politician and Lieutenant of Dover Castle, Sir Edward Dering, erased a coat-of-arms on the roll and replaced it with one that bore the name of a fictional ancestor, Richard fitz Dering, in an attempt to forge his family history.

The manuscript is currently on display in the Sir John Ritblat Gallery: Treasures of the British Library.
