Apparently trees are capable of self-sustaining a reliable source of electricity. While a tree may not seem like much of a powerhouse, the "trickle charge" can add up, "just like a dripping faucet can fill a bucket over time," said Shuguang Zhang, one of the researchers on the project and the associate director of MIT's Center for Biomedical Engineering (CBE).

MIT researchers now believe they can power a network of sensors connected directly to trees to perform a variety of tasks.

Trees could serve as “silent sentinels” along the nation's borders to detect potential threats such as smuggled radioactive materials—with the sensors powered by the trees themselves. They could also prevent forest fires, among other applications, by sending early reports to the authorities.

Right now, the U.S. Forest Service says that manually recharging or replacing batteries in remote automated weather stations

Tags: nature, energy

<clipSource>http://www.dailygalaxy.com/my_weblog/2008/10/researchers-say.html</clipSource>

A Caravan And Motorhome Enthusiast

clipped by: hiremotorhome
clipper's remarks: Rick Lomas is from Newcastle, Staffs, England. Architectural and engineering services added 6,300 new jobs, with a greater need for biomedical, civil, environmental and industrial engineers. Because of the continued and rapid developments in technology, computer systems design and related services added 34,300 positions. Management and technical consulting, which added almost 30,000 jobs, is growing in part due to continuing complexity of business and growing demand for advice in all areas of business planning. The "Q3 2008 Job Forecast" also found that, despite job losses in temporary staffing this year, 31 percent of hiring managers in the broader professional and business services category are expecting to add jobs in the third quarter.

<clipSource>http://msn.careerbuilder.com/custom/msn/careeradvice/viewarticle.aspx?articleid=1632&SiteId=cbmsnsl41632&sc_extcmp=JS_1632_spotlight&GT1=23000&cbRecursionCnt=1&cbsid=109a8e1c907c4723ab71f841991824c3-276632570-wp-6</clipSource>

Offshore software development company | software outsourcing | Web development company

clipped by: semaphoreseo
clipper's remarks: We at Semaphore offers offshore software development, Web development, SEO, Hire dedicated software professionals, software outsourcing..

Clip Source: www.semaphore-software.com

It was painted white and its luminosity emphasised the simple sweep of the frame, the elegance of its engineering. Only up close could you see that it looked so stark and sculptural because all the extraneous bits - chain, brake cables, the rubber on the handlebars and pedals - had been stripped away. It was only the skeleton of a bike and there was a plaque hanging off the crossbar: 'In memory of Smudge, 1971-2008.'

<clipSource>http://www.guardian.co.uk/artanddesign/2008/oct/05/art</clipSource>

1000 Year Old Quake Proof Buildings

clipped by: cakebelly

Clip Source: www.telegraphindia.com

1000-year-old quake-proof architecture

            Sept. 29, 2008 – A landmark piece of legislation protecting California’s
farmers from liability was signed by Governor Schwarzenegger on Sept.
27, 2008. The bill, AB 541 (Huffman, D-Marin/Sonoma), was sponsored
by a coalition of agriculture organizations and food businesses, and
it is the first bill passed by the California legislature that brings
much-needed regulation to genetically engineered (GE) crops.

Tags: genetic engineering ge california farmers

<clipSource>http://www.calgefree.org/speakout.html</clipSource>

'Space elevator' would take humans into orbit

clipped by: If you like doing laps in the swimming pool, you might want to stock up on the energy drinks before diving in to this one.

The man-made saltwater lagoon has been attracting huge crowds to the San Alfonso del Mar resort at Algarrobo, on Chile's southern coast, since it opened.

Chile's monster pool uses a computer-controlled suction and filtration system to keep fresh seawater in permanent circulation, drawing it in from the ocean at one end and pumping it out at the other.

Chilean biochemist Fernando Fischmann, whose Crystal Lagoons Corporation designed the pool, said advanced engineering meant his company could build "an impressive artificial paradise" even in inhospitable areas.

My team is working on Flash on the iPhone, but it’s a closed platform.

It was hinted at that the hold up was in Apple’s court now and as soon as Apple gives the go ahead a Flash player for the iPhone could be released quite rapidly. Rumors are still swirling that the reason behind the hold up is that Flash just simply can’t work properly without some compromises in the iPhone SDK.

Tags: iphone, iphone 3g, flash, flash player, iphone flash player, adobe, adobe flash

<clipSource>http://www.iphone-hacks.com/2008/10/01/iphone-flash-player-just-waiting-for-apple/</clipSource>

Grid of 100,000 computers heralds new internet dawn

clipped by: wildcat
clipper's remarks: The Grid is coming

Clip Source: technology.timesonline.co.uk

A network of 100,000 computers providing the greatest data processing capacity
yet unleashed has been created to cope with information pouring from the
world’s largest machine.

The Grid is the latest evolution of the internet and the world wide web and
computer scientists will announce on Friday that it is ready to be connected
to the Large Hadron Collider (LHC).

It is designed for schemes where huge quantities of data need crunching, such
as large research and engineering projects. The Grid has the kind of power
required to download movies in seconds, and the ability to make
high-definition video phone calls for the same price as a local call. More
importantly, it should help to narrow the search for cures for diseases.
However, it is unlikely to be directly available to most internet users
until telecoms providers build the fibre-optic network required to use it.
