Army going Solar

Huge Solar Thermal Power Plant
The Army will be joining with an unnamed private sector partner to build a 500 MW solar thermal power plant at Fort Irwin, California. The plant will supply both power to the public electric grid as well as the base itself. The Army is touting the project as providing greater energy security in the event of a disruption to the power supply at large.

Other Green Efforts
The solar thermal power plant is the obvious big news, but three other green projects were announced concurrently:

The Army is pursuing the purchase of 4,000 small Neighborhood Electric Vehicles to replace gasoline-powered vehicles traditionally used by maintenance and operations staff for use on its posts

Six Army posts have been selected as sites for biomass to fuel demonstrations

The Army will enter into a pilot energy savings performance contract with the private sector

Right now the U.S. has a very real opportunity to transform our economy from one running on fossil fuels to one largely based on clean energy.

The energy team at Google has been crunching the numbers to see how we could greatly reduce fossil fuel use by 2030.

Our analysis, led by Jeffery Greenblatt, suggests a potential path to weaning the U.S. off of coal and oil for electricity generation by 2030 (with some remaining use of natural gas as well as nuclear), and cutting oil use for cars by 40%.

Our goal in presenting this first iteration of the Clean Energy 2030 proposal is to stimulate debate and we invite you to take a look and comment -- or offer an alternative approach if you disagree.

Over 22 years this plan could generate billions of dollars in savings and help create millions of green jobs.

Green Wombat often highlights high tech when it comes to tackling global warming and energy independence. But a new study from the University of California’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory shows that simply installing white roofs on homes and commercial buildings - to reflect the sun’s rays rather than absorb them - can reduce air-conditioning costs by 20% and could save $1 billion a year in energy outlays in the United States.

Switch to cool sidewalks and roads and the savings rise to $2 billion annually, according to the study by scientists Hashem Akbari and Surabi Menon and California Energy Commissioner Art Rosenfeld to be published in the journal Climate Change.

The scientists calculated that a global white roofs and roads effort would offset 44 billion metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions, or more than a year’s worth of carbon, and help stablize future C02 emission increases.

Google plans 4.4-trillion-dollar green energy plan

San Francisco - Web giant Google unveiled a new national energy plan for the US Wednesday that it said would largely wean the country of fossil fuels by 2030.

The 4.4-trillion-dollar plan was developed by Google's philanthropic arm Google.org, which predicted that the county would reap net savings of 1 trillion dollars over the idea's 22-year term.

The plan called "Clean Energy 2030" was unveiled in an online posting by Jeffery Greenblatt, Google.org's climate and energy- technology manager. It is based on halting the generation of electricity from coal and oil by 2030 and instead relying on power from wind, nuclear and geothermal sources.

It also entails cutting oil use for cars by 40 per cent. It calls for heavy investments in transmission capacity for wind and solar power in the Great Plains and desert Southwest to help cut 88 per cent of fossil fuel use and 95 per cent of carbon-dioxide emissions by 2030.

Abstract
Seawater desalination, from any perspective, is an expensive proposition. With numerous advancements in membrane technology, pump and motor efficiencies, and energy recovery devices, the operating expenses of Seawater Reverse Osmosis systems can be dramatically reduced. Although the capital cost of a stateoftheart system may be higher, the price difference of a welldesigned RO system will quickly pay for itself in energy savings.

Another factor in the efficiency of double paned windows are the various glazings or UV coatings. For those in very cold regions, the UV coating should allow as much solar energy though as possible to maximize the sun's warmth and reduce heating bills. In hot regions, however, UV coatings should be maximum to keep out solar heat and reduce air conditioning use. High UV coatings on double paned windows also protect floors, rugs, and photographs from sun damage. In regions in which a combination of weather is normal, double paned windows can be designed with a combination of factors to best maximize energy-savings.

Picking the right windows can mean a significant savings in energy bills, but what's right for one part of the country might not be right for another, depending on the local climate.

For example, framing materials contribute greatly to the insulation properties of windows. In extremely cold climates, the outer frame on double paned windows should ideally be wood, vinyl or fiberglass. Colder climates can also benefit from gas-filled windows. However, in areas that have warmer weather year round, aluminum frames might be used, and air-filled windows are fine.
