We received a leaked document detailing changes to the Endangered Species Act that the Bush administration intends to propose in the coming weeks.

This would seriously weaken the safety net of habitat protections that we have relied upon to protect endangered fish, wildlife and plants for the past 35 years.

the lowest and hottest place in the Western Hemisphere, Death Valley; the largest western hemisphere estuary, the Bay Delta; an 800-mile coastline; the most irrigated acres; the most endangered species in the U.S.; A team from Manchester University and Chester Zoo are in Costa Rica to track down the highly endangered creatures.

Amphibian numbers around the world have crashed, in part because of a deadly fungus. Costa Rica has been particularly badly hit.

In the late 1980s, herpetologists around the world found that amphibian populations were suffering unprecedented declines, but they struggled to understand exactly why.

A decade later, researchers isolated a previously unknown fungus, Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis, which was infecting amphibians, effectively suffocating them by making it impossible for them to breathe across their skin.

A new species of giant clam has been discovered in the Red Sea.

The fossil record suggests that, about 125,000 years ago, the species Tridacna costata accounted for more than 80% of local giant clams.

The species may now be critically endangered, researchers report in Current Biology journal.

The scientists believe their findings may represent one of the earliest examples of the over-exploitation of marine organisms by humans.

T. costatahas "very peculiar characteristics" that set it apart from two other species of giant clam that are also found in the area.

The Latin word costatus means "ribbed" and T. costata has a disitinctive, zig-zag outline to its shell.

"The new species are mid-sized clams - up to 40cm long and a couple of kilograms heavy," explained co-author Dr Claudio Richter, from the Alfred-Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research, Germany.

The new species has a distant relative, T. gigas, which can grow up to 1.4m long.

Ms. Palin has made it clear through her actions that she is unwilling to do even as much as the Bush administration to address the impacts of global warming.
