Sony Recycles Ads To Make Point About E-Waste

Sony Electronics and Waste Management Recycle America are teaming up to raise awareness of the importance of recycling electronics.

To that end, the companies will stage an event in Boston on Sept. 13 wherein the first 2,000 consumers to drop off their old electronics at Gillette Stadium receive a free "environmentally friendly" cloth tote.

And Sony is recycling an old television ad promoting what looks like one of its first Beta video recorders and players. Superimposed near the end are these words: "We're recycling our old 1970s commercials to remind you to recycle your old electronics." TV and newspaper print ads will run over the next couple of weeks prior to the Boston event and then roll out to other markets such as Phoenix, Austin, Texas, and Atlanta.

Along with Waste Management, Sony has collected about 9.2 million pounds of electronic waste.

Bell Labs Kills Fundamental Physics Research

After six Nobel Prizes, the invention of the transistor, laser and countless contributions to computer science and technology, it is the end of the road for Bell Labs' fundamental physics research lab.

Alcatel-Lucent, the parent company of Bell Labs, is pulling out of basic science, material physics and semiconductor research and will instead be focusing on more immediately marketable areas such as networking, high-speed electronics, wireless, nanotechnology and software.

"In the new innovation model, research needs to keep addressing the need of the mother company," he says.

Still for fundamental physics research there will be life after Bell Labs, though it will be dependent on the whims of the federal government.

ICE agents on Monday seized 595 plant workers suspected of being in the country illegally. Several workers, who did not identify themselves, said Tuesday they were working and trying to keep the plant operational in the wake of the sudden loss of co-workers.

It’s an idea that maddens Samantha Stevens, 18, of Heidelberg, who was among those who pulled up to Avenue A across from the plant’s entrance throughout the day. She said she has been unable to find a job since she graduated from Heidelberg High School in the spring and blames, in part, the willingness of companies to hire illegal workers.

Gwendolyn Watkins, 40, of Stonewall said she drove 40 miles to Laurel to fill out an application with the electronics maker. She worked at Tower Automotive in Meridian as a production worker for eight months before job cuts in June left her unemployed.

They are hiring Americans again!

The rhetoric from the floor of the Democratic National Convention may be purely partisan, but leave it to the K Streeters here in Denver to bring about a little bipartisan comity.

Citi’s top lobbyist, Nick Calio, joined two of his Democratic colleagues, Jimmy Ryan and Colin Dowling, in throwing a cocktail reception Monday evening at Sullivan’s of Denver, a dimly lit 1940s-style steakhouse that would feel like home to any D.C. lobbyist.

“Where else would you expect a guy named Jimmy Ryan to hold a party?” Ryan quipped.

Calio, the former top Congressional liaison for President Bush, wasn’t the only Republican there.

The bipartisanship continued outside Sullivan’s, where AT&T’s top lobbyist and a loyal supporter of Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), Tim McKone, chatted it up with Bert Carp, a Democratic lobbyist from Williams & Jensen.

“I have a lot of friends who are Democrats,” Calio explained.

Not many photographers need a linear accelerator. But Nick Veasey isn't your average shutterbug. Instead of tweaking f-stops and light boxes, he fine-tunes the speed and frequency of energy pulses emitted by a Russian-made tabletop particle turbocharger. That's because Veasey doesn't work with traditional cameras and film — he works with x-rays.

The 46-year-old Englishman estimates that over the past decade or so he's x-rayed more than 4,000 objects: flowers, football players, alarm clocks, tractors, even a 777. "I'm interested in how things work, and x-rays show what's happening under the surface," he says. "Plus, they look cool." To get his pictures, Veasey uses industrial x-ray machines typically employed in art restoration (to examine oil paintings), electronics manufacturing (to inspect circuit boards), and the military (to check tanks for stress fractures).

Double standards have always been a part of U.S. foreign policy. It’s time to figure out how many should no longer be tolerated.

The official position of the United States is that Europe should allow Turkey to join the European Union. Turkey’s entry would give its citizens the right to travel freely to any other EU member state. This prodding to Europeans to embrace Turkey comes from the same country that is building a 700-mile-long wall along its border with Mexico.

When the South Korean government bailed out Hyundai Electronics Industries in 2001, the U.S. Senate passed a resolution urging the Bush administration “to assure that the unlawful bailout by the Republic of Korea is stopped.” This July, the U.S. Congress approved a far larger bailout of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the two mortgage giants.

One obvious example is the U.S. embargo of Cuba; the policy’s failure is now even accepted by a growing segment of Cuban exiles in South Florida.
