Aug. 20 (Bloomberg) -- Barack Obama and John McCain are locked in a tight battle for president, with the Democrat capitalizing on voter concern over the economy and energy and the Republican benefiting from his experience and success in neutralizing the issue of the unpopular Iraq war.

The latest Bloomberg/Los Angeles Times poll shows that Obama, the first black major-party nominee, may have defused the issue of race, particularly among independents who will form a crucial voting bloc in the November election.

With the nominating conventions set to begin next week, Illinois Senator Obama edges McCain 42 percent to 41 percent among registered voters; minor-party candidates garner 5 percent. In a head-to-head matchup excluding third-party candidates, Obama has a 2-point advantage over Arizona Senator McCain. The results are within the poll's margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

It's time to throw my hat in the ring as regards predicting the election results. So here it is: Barack Obama will be defeated. Seriously and convincingly defeated

He will lose for one reason above all, one that has been overlooked in any analysis that I've yet seen. Barack Obama will lose because he is a flake.

But what has been overlooked is the string of faux pas marking each step of Obama's journey, a series of strange, inexplicable actions

What are these incidents?

To Chicago. One of the windiest, coldest, most brutal cities in the country. One that is also infinitely corrupt in a sense that Hawaii is not. One that remains one of the most racist large cities in the U.S.

And what does he do when he reaches the city? Why, he joins a cult.

Obama apparently had to swear an oath of belief in "black liberation theology" when he joined the church.

But then... he writes nothing for the journal.

he voted "present" nearly as much as he voted "yes" or "no".

In a surprising admission that could become a major scandal in the presidential race, Barack Obama’s 40-page so-called “rebuttal” to Jerome Corsi’s book, The Obama Nation, acknowledges for the first time that the senator once had a personal relationship with identified Communist Party USA (CPUSA) member Frank Marshall Davis, a key high-level operative in a Soviet-sponsored network in Hawaii.

But the 40-page report, advertised and sold to the media as a refutation of Corsi’s “lies,” doesn’t identify Davis as a hard-core communist and it dishonestly edits an article about Davis to eliminate references to his admitted involvement in CPUSA activities and make the black revolutionary writer and “poet” look like a civil rights activist.

In fact, Davis was a secret CPUSA member who continued his involvement in the CPUSA or its front activities into the 1970s, when he became Barack Obama’s mentor in Hawaii.

Rachel Maddow Replacing Dan Abrams On MSNBC Effective Immediately

Rachel Maddow will replace Dan Abrams as host of the 9PM hour on MSNBC, the New York Times' Bill Carter reports. Just last month in a Times article by Jacques Steinberg, MSNBC president Phil Griffin declared Maddow "at the top" of a "very short list" for those who should have their own show, though at the time he said he "[didn't] know when" that would be. As Carter reports, the final stretch of the 2008 election season will be Maddow's debut as the host of her own MSNBC show:

The moves, which were confirmed by MSNBC executives Tuesday, are expected to be finalized by Wednesday, with Mr. Abrams's last program on Thursday. After MSNBC's extensive coverage of the two political conventions during the next two weeks, Ms. Maddow will begin her program on Sept. 8.

If cash equals friendship, then John McCain and the oil industry are best friends.

The Arizona Republican has taken $1.4 million from oil industry employees in the 2007-2008 election cycle, more than any other politician, according to CRP.

That's over three times as much as Barack Obama, who ranks just below Hillary Clinton as the highest Democrat recipient.

PBS's Jim Lehrer and CBS's Bob Schieffer will join Tom Brokaw as moderators of this year's three presidential debates. These guys are not the only ones with questions!

in an election year in which race, gender and generational change have dominated politics and public discourse, the commission decided that these three white men, aged 68, 71 and 74, respectively, are our nation's best choices to question the candidates and represent voter consciousness

this is not about hating the players, just the game. The chosen ones are all esteemed journalists and have not only paid their dues but supported a number of younger reporters in their own careers, myself included. No, my criticism is aimed at the tired institutional thinking that automatically defaults to older white men to bring gravitas and credibility to important national events and assumes—wrongly—that the men are somehow free of a perspective shaped by their own life circumstances and life stories.

Sheehan plans to speak during a 9 a.m. rally on the Sunday before the Democratic National Convention begins

Organizers say her speech will take place on the steps of the state Capitol on Aug. 24 just before Re-create 68's scheduled march to the Pepsi Center

Sheehan became an activist after her oldest son Casey was killed in Iraq. She has also qualified to run as an independent against House Speaker Nancy Pelosi in November's general election.

DNCC tickets wrap Obama in upside down flag

Maybe the DNCC has kept track of the polling this summer and figures the Democratic nominee is officially in distress. That’s the only explanation for a silly gaffe by the convention committee for the graphics on their credentials for those allowed to see Barack Obama’s acceptance speech at Invesco Field. The holographic image uses an American flag motif with the blue field at the bottom, with Obama’s head emerging from it in one of the two alternating images

the Obama campaign says the flag is not upside down. He says it is a stylized flag designed to blend the stars on Senator Obama’s shirt with the flag blowing in the wind.

Yes — a flag blowing upside-down. The DNCC would not even admit they used a flag:

The DNCC community credentials incorporate patriotic design elements. They do not depict an actual American flag.

Blue field …. check. Stars …. check. Alternating white and red stripes …. check. Looks like the flag to me.

Houses empty despite shortage

RESOURCE companies are leaving houses empty for months at a time in the West Australian mining town of Port Hedland, which is in the grip of an accommodation crisis.

Tom Stephens, the Labor member for the Pilbara, said he had come across empty houses while campaigning for the coming state election, not only in Port Hedland, 1800km north of Perth, but in other mining towns in the state's northwest such as Newman and Tom Price.

He believed some houses were empty for up to 18 months while resource companies tried to fill vacant positions.

"It's because these companies are distracted by the huge task and pressure they're under, but regrettably they cause problems for the community because of the policies that leave houses empty while others are desperate for them," Mr Stephens said.

An old man lies alone in the dark each night, hobbled by an auto accident and haunted by death. To fill the sleepless hours, he thinks up a story about a man who wakes up into an alternate America - one where there was no Sept. 11 and no Iraq War, but one where the controversial 2000 presidential election sparked a kind of blue-state/red-state civil war that has claimed millions of lives.

Auster's latest novel toggles between these two tales - one ruminative, the other fantastic. Both relate to retired book critic August Brill, who is recuperating from a car wreck at his daughter's home in Vermont. Brill has lost his wife to cancer and is also disturbed by the horrific death of his granddaughter's former boyfriend. Brill and his granddaughter, who is also recovering at her mother's house, keep the awful thoughts at bay by watching great films on TV all day.
