It's a good time to pick up an electronic voting machine on the cheap—provided you're not a stickler for things like "accuracy" or "security." States are scrapping tens of thousands of pricey touchscreen systems in response to mounting concerns about the machines' reliability.

After the butterfly ballot debacle of the 2000 presidential election, in which scores of elderly Floridians revealed a surprising fondness for Pat Buchanan, electronic voting was touted as the way to avoid any such fiasco in the future. Congress passed the Help America Vote Act of 2002, which allocated some $3 billion in federal grants to help states upgrade their voting equipment—$2 billion of which had been spent by the end of 2007.

Now, however, many of those states—including Alaska, California, Florida, Iowa, Maryland, Tennessee, and New Mexico—are ditching touchscreen kiosks with price tags as high as $5,000 each in favor of paper ballots.

Tags: voting, technology

<clipSource>http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20080820-states-rush-to-dump-touchscreen-voting-systems.html</clipSource>

Granny falls down baggage chute.

clipped by: Smoke TNT

Clip Source: news.yahoo.com

STOCKHOLM (AFP) -

More than 70,000 French citizens – from children to the elderly – were murdered on the guillotine, by hanging, and by firing squads, in the name of "Liberty, Equality, Brotherhood."

Those same liberal-progressive ideals espoused by Thomas Paine gave us the 20th century, the most savagely sanguinary and oppressive period in human history, all in the name of perfecting humanity."

These realities combined with the motivations from Rousseau laid the foundations for nationalism and socialism that came to fruition in the early 20th century Europe.

Clip Source: www.intellectualconservative.com

Paine's social and political ideas were essentially the revolutionary and bloody socialism that afflicted the world in the 1789 French Revolution.

His The Age of Reason is an attack upon Christianity and all spiritual religion, a panegyric to the minds of intellectuals as the source of human perfection via the collectivized political state.

Paine was a great admirer and supporter of the French Revolution and an advocate of cutting everyone down to the lowest denominator of poverty in order to achieve economic equality. This, of course, remains a guiding principle of today's Democrat/Socialist Party and of liberal-progressives on both sides of the political aisle.

<clipSource>http://www.intellectualconservative.com/2008/08/23/thomas-paine-and-the-values-of-1776/</clipSource>

Continued McCain - Keaing 5

clipped by: nchnted

Clip Source: firstread.msnbc.msn.com

As a result of Lincoln's collapse, American taxpayers lost more than $2 billion on the bailout and more than 21,000 Mostly Elderly Investors Lost Their Life Savings as a result of bankruptcy of Lincoln's parent company.

Because you see, my family comes first, what kind of person would I be, if I gave my "time" to strangers, when "my family" are the one's needing my "time". I am not selfish and do not want anyone to suffer, I do what I can, for whom I can, whenever the need arises. I will continue to show my concern, and be of help. I will also continue to find the right people who believe that "together, "we can" make a difference in the world we live in". Even if our world only reaches as far as our own back yard...it makes no difference to "Him"..., just as long as we do something.....

Clip Source: www.experienceproject.com

Too Much Negativity In This World

What about "Quality of Life"? Government officials say that more than 200,000 people are detained in re-education centers for terms ranging from one to three years, although detentions can be extended for those whose rehabilitation is deemed inadequate.

<clipSource>http://www.iht.com/articles/2008/08/20/asia/protest.php</clipSource>

Elderly women sentenced to 're-education' in China

clipped by: spirithiker
clipper's remarks: Living peacefully in China for over 70 years still will not allow you to ask for permission to protest over the government taking their homes away from them.

Police set up protest zones in an apparent attempt to allow protest, or was it just a ruse to bring out would-be protesters so China could jail them?

Clip Source: www.iht.com

The two women, both in their late 70s, have never spoken out against China's authoritarian government. Both walk with the help of a cane, and Wang is blind in one eye. Their grievance, receiving insufficient compensation when their homes were seized for redevelopment, is perhaps the most common complaint among Chinese displaced during the country's long streak of fast economic growth.

But the Beijing police still sentenced the two women to an extrajudicial term of "re-education through labor" this week for applying to hold a legal protest in a designated area in Beijing, where officials promised that Chinese could hold demonstrations during the Olympic Games.

"I feel very sad and angry because we're only asking for the basic right of living and it's been six years, but nobody will do anything to help," Li said.

Tags: human rights

<clipSource>http://www.iht.com/articles/2008/08/21/sports/21protest.php</clipSource>
