Sargon of Akkad, also known as Sargon the Great (Akkadian Šarru-kinu

meaning "the true king" or "the king is legitimate"), was an Akkadian king famous for his conquest of the Sumerian city-states in the 24th and 23rd centuries BC.^[1] The founder of the Dynasty of Akkad, Sargon reigned for 56 years, c. 2270 BC – 2215 BC

He became a prominent member of the royal court of Kish, ultimately overthrowing its king before embarking on the conquest of Mesopotamia. Sargon's vast empire is known to have extended from Elam to the Mediterranean sea, including Mesopotamia, parts of modern-day Iran and Syria, and possibly parts of Anatolia and the Arabian peninsula. He ruled from a new capital, Akkad (Agade), which the Sumerian king list claims he built (or possibly renovated), on the left bank of the Euphrates

A video game teaches immunology

The Federation of American Scientists (FAS) has just launched Immune Attack TM, an exciting, fun and fast-moving video game that teaches the critical scientific facts of immunology.

The cutting-edge game is designed to teach how the immune system works to defend the body against invading bacteria. The visual elements and simulations are critical for grasping the complex interactions of the biological systems.

“My students were very engaged while playing Immune Attack,” said Netia Elam, AP Biology Teacher at Forest Park High School in Woodbridge, VA. “The video game provides great visuals and allows the students to interact while playing the game. The kids really wanted to master the game and to do that they needed to learn the immunology concepts.”

The game allows students to use sights, sounds, and touch to get better acquainted with the immune system.

Lost ancient city of Marhashi found in Iran - Claims

Tehran, May 7 : Archaeologists have come up with a new theory, which suggests that the prehistoric site of Jiroft in Iran is the lost ancient city of Marhashi.

Marhashi, (also known as Warahshe) was a 3rd millennium BC polity situated east of Elam, on the Iranian plateau. It is known from Mesopotamian sources, and its precise location has not been identified.

An inscription of Lugal-Anne-Mundu, the most important king of the Adab city-state in Sumer, locates it, along with Elam, to the south of Gutium, an ancient polity in upper Mesopotamia.

The inscription also explains that Lugal-Anne-Mundu confronted the Warahshe king, Migir-Enlil.

Steinkeller had previously been searching the Kerman region in order to identify a site from the 3rd millennium BC, which he could consider it as Marhashi.

But, Steinkeller found that Jiroft, which had been located between Anshan and Meluhha, lies in the heart of the ancient city of Marhashi, which led him to come up with his theory.

On this day a rare February Rainbow was seen here in Northern Missouri at sunset. This rainbow was visible over much of the area and was noticed by many people. It was seen as a partial bow in some areas and completely full and even double in others depending on where the rain was falling. The photos on this page were taken at the Elam Bend Conservation Area near McFall, Missouri.

Warriors of the Net

Warriors of the Net is a short movie that wonderfully shows how the Internet works from the viewpoint of individual data packets. It was created by Gunilla Elam, Tomas Stephansson, Niklas Hanberger and Monte Reid, at the Ericsson Medialab, in Sweden.

This image shows different data packets speeding through a LAN.

While the image opposite is the view of the global Internet from the movie, visualised as a complex mesh of glowing links floating in empty space.

The full twelve minute movie is available, but be warned it is 96 meg. But I think it is well worth the download.

Los Angeles: A federal judge in Los Angeles ruled that parts of an anti-terrorism order issued by US President George W Bush after September 11 are unconstitutional.

US District Judge Audrey Collins found that part of the law which was signed by Bush on September 23, 2001 and was used to freeze the assets of terrorist organisations, violated the Constitution because it put no apparent limit on the president's powers to place groups on that list.

David Cole of the Washington-based Centre for Constitutional Rights said, "This law gave the president unfettered authority to create blacklists, an authority President Bush then used to empower the Secretary of the Treasury to impose guilt by association.

"The court's decision confirms that even in fighting terror, unchecked executive authority and trampling on fundamental freedoms is not a permissible option," he said in a statement.

The lawsuit was brought on behalf of five organisations, including the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Elam, which wants to create a separate state for the Tamil people in Sri Lanka, and Partiya Karkeran Kurdistan, which represents Kurds in Turkey.

Both groups had been designated by the United States as foreign terrorist organisations.

In 2004 Collins struck down a section of the Patriot Act that prohibited lawyers from providing expert advice to groups suspected of having terrorist links.
