clipper's remarks: On May 27, 1944, the paratroopers of 3rd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne waited at the railway station in Hungerford, England, for the trains that would take them to their D-Day marshaling area. The weather was unusually hot for May, and the men sweated as they waited in their steel helmets and jumpsuits.

“Everyone was trying to figure out exactly where we were going,” remembers Amos “Buck” Taylor, a sergeant in the 506th at the time. “We knew it was probably going to be Normandy, but exactly where nobody knew.” Though the location of the invasion had not yet been revealed, the men had some idea of what Gen. Bill Lee, former commander of the 101st, had called “the responsibility ahead of us.” The past nine months had been a blur of grueling training exercises that had tested the mettle even of these men, elite volunteers trained to jump directly into the turbulence of combat. Their training had culminated in Exercise Tiger . . .

Despite years of rumors that he is very...ugh...frugal, and despite the fact that his own son called him "very cheap," rocker Rod Stewart has offered up £7,500 (a little over $11,000 USA dollars) to send veterans to the 65th commemoration of D-Day in France. The Daily Mail:

Rod Stewart led a roll call of politicians, celebrities and generous members of the public backing the Daily Mail's campaign to send the D-Day veterans to Normandy.

The 64-year-old singer said he was 'outraged' the Government had no plans to send an official delegation and offered £7,500 to send 15 Essex veterans to France in June.

He said: 'These men sacrificed everything and we owe them this. My only condition is I'd like to meet them and talk to them as I'd be fascinated to hear about how they landed on their beaches.'

Stewart's grandfather was decorated in the First World War, and his father and two brothers also served.

Left Out of D-Day Events, Queen Elizabeth Is Fuming

LONDON — Queen Elizabeth is not amused.

Indeed, she is decidedly displeased, angry even, that she was not invited to join President Obama and France’s president, Nicolas Sarkozy, next week at commemorations of the 65th anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy, according to reports published in Britain’s mass-circulation tabloid newspapers on Wednesday. Pointedly, Buckingham Palace did not deny the reports.

The queen, who is 83, is the only living head of state who served in uniform during World War II. As Elizabeth Windsor, service number 230873, she volunteered as a subaltern in the Women’s Auxiliary Territorial Service, training as a driver and a mechanic. Eventually, she drove military trucks in support roles in England.

While serving, she met the supreme Allied commander for the D-Day landings, Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower,

President Eisenhower warned of the “military-industrial complex.” Now on the eve of the World Business Summit on Climate Change in Copenhagen, “Skeptical Environmentalist” author Bjorn Lomborg warns of the “climate-industrial complex.”

Lomborg, hardly a conservative, writes, “We are told that very expensive carbon regulations are the only way to respond to global warming, despite ample evidence that this approach does not pass a basic cost-benefit test. We must ask whether a “climate-industrial complex” is emerging, pressing taxpayers to fork over money to please those who stand to gain.”

Later in 1954, the race of large nosed Gray Aliens which had been orbiting the Earth landed at Holloman Air Force Base. A basic agreement was reached with them. This race identified themselves as originating from a planet around a red star in the Constellation of Orion which we call Betelgeuse. Those in blue/cyan represents multi-term GOP presidents where no such panic occurred. Eisenhower and Nixon are the two non-panic GOP presidents. A simple business cycle recession took place near the end of Eisenhower's presidency. He's also the president to kick-off the largest public works program in world history with the Interstate highway system. Richard Nixon, of course, was president during the stagflation years of the oil shocks though a lot of his economic woes likely came out of spending for Johnson's Great Society programs.

OK, correlation does not equal causation; but this is modestly humorous. Over the last century, any time you had a multi-term GOP president (in other words, long enough to do real damage) you had a pretty substantial collapse in the banking industry (i.e., near fundamental economic collapse). For the statistics junkies the R does not equal 1...it assuredly can be described as R<>1 but R is notably greater than 0. Just putting down a list of presidents over the last century and then mapping the major bank panics over the same time period reveals some interesting stuff.
