Apartheid victims want Western companies to cough up

Victims of apartheid continue to seek justice. Now the South African government supports a case against several Western companies that did business with the white rulers.

Mpho Masemola has pieces of shrapnel in his skull. So many that no doctor dares try to remove them. They have been there since the early nineteen eighties.

Masemola is demanding compensation from German arms supplier Rheinmetall AG because he claims this company provided equipment and logistical support to the security troops of the apartheid regime. Computer companies like American IBM and Japanese Fujitsu are also being asked to cough up: they supplied the computer systems that reportedly enabled the white rulers to implement the hated Pass laws.

"Our case is not only about the apartheid past, but also about how companies behave in general in countries where human rights are violated," says lawyer Abrahams.

Playing Tetris, the classic eighties video game, can boost the brain's grey matter, according to a new study.

“This kind of research is demonstrating the reasons and the conditions under which the brain becomes adaptive and changes,” says Richard Haier, a psychologist and co-investigator in the study, published yesterday in the online journal BMC Research Notes.

a group of adolescent girls aged 12 to 15 who practised the puzzle game for 30 minutes a day over the course of three months. Using two brain imaging techniques, the study found that, compared with a control group of girls who did not practise Tetris, playing the game not only improved the brain's efficiency, it also increased the thickness of the cortex, an area of the brain scientists believe plays a role in the planning of complex, co-ordinated movements.

“It is a mystery,” Dr. Haier says.

Tetris is an ideal tool for brain research, he adds.

There are developments that could (and probably will) lead to humans being able to live forever. But is it desirable?

Ageing is not inevitable.

The average life expectancy of a British human being lies almost exactly halfway between these two extremes, with most of us alive today expected to make it well into our eighties

The latest evidence suggests that people who die at 90 spend roughly the same amount of time in hospital as those who die in their seventies, and only twice as long as those who die in their mid-forties.

But to make further inroads into extending our life expectancy we need to do more than negate hazards such as disease and accidents. We need to slow the ticking of our genetic clocks.

Producing a potentially immortal skin cell in a Petri dish in a lab is a long way from significantly extending human life expectancy, but it is a step in the right direction and the solution is likely to come from genetic engineering rather than from some as-yet-undiscovered natural panacea.

Where does the Dr Who Sonic Screwdriver come from?
Back in the nineteen eighties the Dr Who sonic screwdriver is destroyed by the Terileptil and the writer, Eric Saward, originally wrote an extra scene at the end of the episode where the TARDIS provided the Doctor with a replacement. John Nathan-Turner scrapped this scene as he wanted to get rid of the sonic screwdriver because he thought that the writers were getting too dependent on it as a solution to any situation. The Doctor does however get a replacement when his is destroyed during the episode “Smith and Jones”.

Rush’s comparison does not work. It doesn’t make sense. Partisan politics can’t be applied to something as random as a celebrity death. Ronald Reagan had as little to do with Jackson’s success, as Obama did with his death. Jackson’s talent made him the world’s biggest star in the 80s, not Ronald Reagan, and Obama did not cause Jackson’s heart trouble.

The wingnut pundits are doing everything they can to cast Obama in a bad light. He's a tyrant and a dictator, but they descend to trivialities like his choice of mustard or his reaction to a reporter's intrusive ringtone. The cognitive dissonance it takes to agree with these people is becoming more conflicted every day. What's next - blame Obama for the Teapot Dome Scandal?

Jackson's success paralleled the rebound of the United States under Ronaldus Magnus. Michael Jackson's biggest successes, and as it turns out his final successes, real successes took place in the eighties. That was Billie Jean, Thriller and all this. I mean he was as weird as he could be but he was profoundly, because of his weirdness, an individual. He wasn't a group member. He reached a level of success that may never be equaled. That's not a bottle she's going to put in her mouth ! The artist, which probably thought it was a good joke (it was), was fired and sued. All posters were recalled and a new campaign was launched.

This ad appeared in the British Yellow Pages The title is of course already double in itself. But if you turn the picture upside down and cover part of it, you can see a young girl fingering herself. I think this is the most convincing example of a subliminal ad, possibly also a joke. What else would the picture of a drinking woman be doing on an ad for flooring ?

Some excellent experiments in behavioral research were conducted by Professor Susan Mineka in the eighties.

By showing some monkeys footage of a wild monkey utterly terrified of snakes, she triggered the same hysterical responses in those who had never seen the object of fear,

Further, attempts to trigger a fear of flowers by showing fake footage of a monkey scared of plants failed. It seemed that the "snakes suck" wiring was always there, but until it was externally triggered it never manifested.

The same research also showed how to combat these phobic trip-switches: by showing them a monkey that wasn't scared of snakes, even if that was a fake monkey, the terror-reaction was strongly reduced.
