It's a push by SNCF to expand its contactless payment system, and would allow customers to plug their train passes into a PC at home. There they could add money to their account, avoiding the rush at the station to dump money onto a card as the train is pulling away (something we're very familiar with here in New York City). On the train, the fare would be deducted from the card either by an RFID reader or by an attendant with a handheld tool.

Depending on the program's success, SNCF may try to have all their customers using the system by 2010. The closest thing we have to it here in the States are bank promotions that allow you to marry your metro card with your bank account. Then again, Europe isn't as train-retarded as the US, where cross-country trains are barely used, save for some commercial interests.

Tags: rfid, efficiency

<clipSource>http://dvice.com/archives/2008/08/french_train_ri.php</clipSource>

Water Down the Drain

clipped by: oneilljn

Clip Source: dotearth.blogs.nytimes.com

In the United States, nearly one-third of the food that is produced each year, worth about $48 billion, is discarded. Moreover, his unique physique reduces drag through the water and allows for maximum propulsion.
* Phelps has a greater-than-average lung capacity allowing him to execute his underwater dolphin kicks longer than the competition.
* He has a genetic advantage that cause his muscles to produce 50% less lactic acid than other athletes. This means he can work at higher work loads for longer periods.
* With a low body fat of 4%, he is better able to convert his effort into speed.

Looking at this list it’s as if Phelps was designed to swim.

Which leads to an interesting question: Given the potential for genetic modification and gene doping, should it be acceptable for other athletes to acquire the same physiological endowments through artificial means?

If not, what makes it so acceptable to come by these traits ‘naturally?’ And how

Clip Source: ieet.org

Watching Michael Phelps swim you quickly realize that he’s not like the others. He’s clearly in a league of his own.

Or more accurately, he’s swimming in a genetic pool of his own. Phelps has a number of fortuitous physical endowments that have enabled him to dominate like no other. Simply put, he is the perfect swimmer.

Here’s what Phelps has going for him:

Most people have a wingspan that matches their height. Not Phelps. Electrical energy is generated by the rotation of hydro-turbines utilizing natural water
currents from either the oceans or rivers. Currently hydropower is the greatest renewable
energy source in the US. Although most hydropower is produced by large utilities using
dams, there are hydro-turbines available for residential applications using small streams
and creeks. Using the oceans tides to generate electricity is another method of hydropower,
termed tidal power, that is becoming more widespread. You may qualify for tax
credits or rebates when purchasing and installing a hydro-turbine or you can look into
purchasing hydroelectric energy from your local utility. Visit the Database of State Incentives

One of
the main functions of pharmaceutical representatives is to provide free samples
to doctors’ offices instead of what has historically been their vocation:
implementing authentic and ethical persuasion via presentations. Yet presently,
samples are a priority and delivering them is the primary function for drug
reps, and these samples in themselves cost billions to the pharmaceutical
industry. Yet arguably, samples are the most influential tool in influencing the

it’s samples, not a representative, as the true catalyst of establishing the
prescribing habits of a prescriber.

Tags: doctor, drug company, efficiency, method, money, office, order, order form, pharma, pharmaceutical industry

<clipSource>http://brainblogger.com/2008/08/26/are-drug-reps-really-necessary/</clipSource>

TRANE

clipped by: zeek2352

Clip Source: www.trane.com

Improved circulation for total relaxation. An air handler is an important part of
your air conditioning equipment. Your central air conditioning system consists of
two main parts—an outdoor unit and an indoor unit. The air handler is the indoor
unit and its job is to effectively circulate conditioned air throughout your home.
When matched with a heat pump, it circulates both cool and hot air, depending on
the season. With properly sized Trane air handlers, your family has the right amount
of clean, comfortable air all year round.

Plus, Trane air handlers make a significant contribution to the overall efficiency
of your system. That’s because the more efficient your air handler is, the less
work your outdoor unit has to do to make your home comfortable. Take a look at our
family of air handlers below to find the product that best fits your needs.

It says it has increased the efficiency of a technique for wirelessly powering consumer gadgets and computers, a development that could allow a person to simply place a device on a desktop countertop to power it. It could bring the consumer electronics industry a step closer to a world without wires.

On Thursday, the chip maker plans to demonstrate the use of a magnetic field to broadcast up to 60 watts of power two to three feet. It says it can do that losing only 25 percent of the power in transmission.

Induction is already used to recharge electric toothbrushes, but that approach is limited by the need for the toothbrush to be placed in the base station.

Intel team describes its system as a “wireless resonant energy link,” and is experimenting with antennas less than two feet in diameter to remotely light a 60-watt light bulb.

<clipSource>http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08/21/technology/21intel.html?_r=1&ref=technology&oref=slogin</clipSource>

What Is Economics?

clipped by: skwirlinator
clipper's remarks: Exchange is the trading of goods for money or for other goods. A market is any mechanism for buyers and sellers to exchange goods. A free market is a market in which buyers and sellers are generally free to decide what to exchange and under what terms. Money is anything generally accepted as a medium of exchange and thus useful for storing or measuring economic value. The price of a good is the amount of economic value that must be exchanged to acquire it. Demand is willingness and ability to buy. Supply is availability and proffer for sale. The scarcity of a good is the excess of its demand over its supply, and in a free market is measured by price.

Clip Source: humanknowledge.net

Economics: the study of production, exchange, and consumption of

as determined by free markets. Goods are anything which has
economic
value. The economic cost of a good is the economic value of the
goods and resources expended to produce it. Economic efficiency
is economic value divided by economic cost.

goods.
Economic
resources are any natural resources, human
resources, or capital resources that are useful for production. Capital
is any product that is has utility for production. Human resources
are the labor, skills, and knowledge of persons.

without
adding to production. Wealth is the economic value of what one
owns
minus what one owes. Income is change in net wealth plus the
value
of goods consumed.

The system can absorb energy very well, but that's no good to anyone until they work out a way to harvest it from the sheet - when you're dealing with a hyper-complex web of millions of units oscillating at trillions of cycles per second, you can't just solder copper wires to the ends and call them plus and minus. This isn't a mistake or a weakness in the concept though; it's an issue because no-one has ever done this before. You know, the kind of thing that happens with cutting edge invention.

Clip Source: www.dailygalaxy.com

Nanotech has fueled the imaginations of science-fictioners for years, with world-changing and ending inventions in equal measure.

But the real strength of this molecular machinery is how it can upgrade existing concepts, and this time it's solar power's turn.

Considering that the Sun already provides all the Earth's organic
