The American Academy of Family Physicians has begun to address this issue with the AIM (Americans In Motion) Challenge which began in 2004 with a 3 phase program. In 2004, the Academy went to each state's scientific assembly to promote its AIM Challenge and gather research data about its physicians. That year, they encouraged physicians to become fit themselves. The second stage of the initiative was to get clinic staff involved. And, finally, after they had become role models, themselves, they could begin to change the lives of patients. This was later joined by the Ready, Set, Fit! program targeting schools and school-age children. As far as I know, this is the only medical academy that has taken responsibility for its personal role as models of fitness for patients. Unfortunately, support systems, further education, and follow-thru have been lacking. But it is a start.

Sex education 'should begin at four'

Mandatory sex and relationship education for children as young as four is needed to reduce the rising teenage STI and abortion rate, according to two leading sexual health charities.

Brook and Family Planning Association (FPA) claim the government is failing young people because they're not giving them enough information about the emotional side of sex and relationships.

Chief Executive of Brook Simon Blake says the government need to "make it part of the curriculum, signal to people that you (the government) really are serious and we will see some impact on teenage pregnancy, on abortion rates, on access to contraception".

Children in Norfolk learn to differentiate body parts

Year 2 pupils who are six and seven years old learn about the difference between male and females.

They use laminated cards with the names of body parts including, shoulder, kidneys, vagina, penis, and arms, to learn which parts belong to both sexes or just males or females.

In your editorial supporting Mount Royal College's bid for university status, you mention the 5,300 qualified Alberta students who were turned away from universities in 2006 because there was "no room for them." In fact, there is room for them at one of Alberta's four public degree-granting universities -- (online and distance education) Athabasca University, established by the province in 1970. We are a public university accredited by the government of Alberta and the Campus Alberta Quality Council. We are also accredited in British Columbia and the only public Canadian university accredited in the United States. Currently, more than 37,000 students are enrolled at AU, the vast majority of whom live, and work, in Western Canada. Indeed, just last week, we were pleased to confer degrees upon 1,588 of our students, who come from every province in Canada and around the world.

For the most part the education systems of the industrialized nations are functional in that they cover the basics: reading, writing, science, and arithmetic. There is systematic guidance in the form of counselors in schools once a child becomes an adolescent and help is given for the child to develop into their adult career.

What is a futurist to do to inspire the next generation?

A futurist can share sci-fi books such as Stephen Hawking’s new book for children “George’s Secret Key to the Universe”, or a transhumanist adventure based on what is seen as possible by scientists now –like my book “21st Century Kids”,

but they still must encourage the child’s own loves, even if they are radically different.

An Indiana teacher who used a much lauded bestseller, The Freedom Writers Diary, to try to inspire under-performing high-school students has been suspended from her job without pay for 18 months.

The effective book ban by the school authorities in Perry Township has outraged teachers and education reformers.

The Writers Diary, a series of true stories written by inner-city teenagers, was put together by a teacher, Erin Gruwell, and has been celebrated as a model for transforming young lives. It was made into a film with Hilary Swank last year.

“If you read the whole book you will see how these inner-city students grow and change and become articulate, compassionate, educated young people who want to do something good in their lives despite the environment in which they were raised,” she told the Guardian. “I thought my students would very much relate to those kids.”

Connie Heermann, a teacher for 27 years, sought permission to introduce the book to her students

Online education ‘increases inequality’

The Virtual University and Educational Opportunity, a research paper written by Lawrence Gladieux and Watson Scott Swail, concludes that new technology can create a "digital divide" between "white and minorities, the wealthy and less advantaged".

"Advantage magnifies advantage," say the researchers. "Those who use computers on a regular basis are more apt to use them routinely in problem solving and critical thinking."

"While education is the great equaliser, technology appears to be a new engine of inequality."

Without intervention, the research warns that social division within education will continue to grow.

"Those with limited computer experience will be handicapped in their ability to access knowledge and avail themselves of the ever-increasing variety of learning experiences."

Former state science director sues over intelligent design e-mail

AUSTIN – A former state science curriculum director filed suit against the Texas Education Agency and Education Commissioner Robert Scott on Wednesday, alleging she was illegally fired for forwarding an e-mail about a lecture that was critical of the teaching of intelligent design in science classes.

Christina Comer, who lost her job at the TEA last year, said in a suit filed in federal court in Austin that she was terminated for contravening an unconstitutional policy at the agency that required employees to be neutral on the subject of creationism – the biblical interpretation of the origin of humans.

The policy was in force even though the federal courts have ruled that teaching creationism as science in public schools is illegal under U.S. Constitution’s provision preventing government establishment or endorsement of religious beliefs.

“The agency’s ‘neutrality’ policy has the purpose or effect of endorsing religion, and thus violates the Establishment Clause,” the lawsuit said.

The ’60s Begin to Fade as Liberal Professors Retire

Baby boomers, hired in large numbers during a huge expansion in higher education that continued into the ’70s, are being replaced by younger professors who many of the nearly 50 academics interviewed by The New York Times believe are different from their predecessors — less ideologically polarized and more politically moderate.

When it comes to those who consider themselves “liberal activists,” 17.2 percent of the 50-64 age group take up the banner compared with only 1.3 percent of professors 35 and younger.
