Ecuador Constitution Would Grant Inalienable Rights To Nature

Ecuador's proposed constitution includes an article that grants nature the right to "exist, persist, maintain and regenerate its vital cycles, structure, functions and its processes in evolution" and will grant legal standing to any person to defend those rights in court.

Voters will get to decide on Sept. 28 whether to adopt the new constitution, which would allow the president to run for reelection, to dissolve Congress, and to exert great control over the country's central bank. According to Reuters, 56 percent of Ecuadorans approve of the proposed document.

The blog Green Change quotes the five articles that acknowledge rights said to be possessed by nature, or "Pachamama," a goddess revered by indigenous Andean peoples whose name roughly translates into "Mother Earth."

MANTA, Ecuador -- When U.S. officers stationed in this humid coastal city give reasons they should continue their decade-old airborne surveillance mission, they talk not only about fighting drug runners on the open seas but about the $71 million they've spent to renovate and maintain the city's airport, and the $6.5 million they inject each year into the local economy.

But the government of Ecuador has decided, and Washington has apparently agreed, that one of the most important foreign outposts in the United States' war on drugs will close. The 450 U.S. Air Force personnel and contractors stationed at a military base that shares the airport's runway will be leaving next year.

"This is a problem for us of sovereignty," Larrea said. "It's as if we had a base in New York. This would be incomprehensible for North Americans."

'Immune' to cancer: The astonishing dwarf community in Ecuador who could hold the key to a cure

A community of dwarfs living in a remote corner of Ecuador could hold the key to curing cancer, according to scientists.

The Laron dwarfs, who are in perfect proportion but grow only to an average height of 4ft, appear to be immune to all forms of the disease and are long-lived.

There are a little more than 300 people in the world with the condition Laron dwarfism, a third of whom live in remote villages in Ecuador’s southern Loja province.

Sufferers of Laron – believed to be caused by inbreeding – lack a hormone called Insulin-like Growth Factor 1, or IGF1.

‘Cancer can be detected in their relatives of a normal size, but never in my patients – not one single case.

Laboratory work in mice, flies and worms has shown that if IGF1 is removed, the animals tend not to get cancer and to live longer.

This is now mirrored in recent research into small humans

who turn out to have little or no IGF1

Ecuador has formally notified the US that it must vacate a base used to combat drug trafficking when the lease expires next year, the Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday.

Ecuadorian officials informed the US embassy of the plans, which have long been a pledge by President Rafael Correa

The US and Ecuador signed a 10-year agreement in November 1999, which expires in August 2009, to establish the base in Manta for counter-narcotics operations. About 300 US soldiers are stationed there.

Ecuador is set to hold a referendum on a new constitution September 28 that does not allow for the presence of foreign bases in the country.

US State Department spokesman Sean McCormack told reporters in Washington the United States accepts Correa's decision but warned an absence of the base would leave a "serious gap" in efforts to intercept drug shipments.

A spokesman for U.S. Trade Representative Susan Schwab confirmed that her office is considering the request. Attorney Steven Donziger, who is coordinating the D.C. opposition to Chevron, says the firm is “trying to get the country to cry uncle.” He adds: “It’s the crudest form of power politics.”
