Eco-architecture could produce 'grow your own' homes

A bus stop that grows its own foliage as shade? A children's playground, made entirely from trees? A shelter made from living tree roots that could provide natural protection against earthquakes in California?

"Eco-architecture" may sound like a Buck Rogers vision of an ecologically-sustainable future, but that future is now thanks to the guidance of Tel Aviv University Professors Yoav Waisel and Amram Eshel.

The concept of shaping living trees into useful objects -- known as tree shaping, arborsculpture, living art or pooktre –– isn't new. But scientists are now ready to use this concept as the foundation of a new company that will roll out these structures worldwide.

Pilot projects now underway in the United States, Australia and Israel include park benches for hospitals, playground structures, streetlamps and gates.

It's even possible that, in the near future, entire homes will be constructed with the eco-friendly technology.

1. The Zoop Car: Designed by the unlikely candidate of Paris fashion house Maison de Courrèges, this electric car is actually capable of speeds of up to 120mph and can seat three people. It might be eco-friendly and relatively fast, but I don’t imagine driving a lemon is for everyone’s taste.

2. The Parkcycle: Whilst not technically a car, it’s roughly car-shaped and was used to occupy parking spaces for the global event PARK(ing), in which participants turn ordinary parking spaces into public parks. Designed by art group Rebar and with a top speed of around 8km/h, it may not be the most maneuverable vehicle, but it does come with a 5m tree on it!

3. The Live-In Truck: Living Is.be has transformed the bed of a truck into a fully-functional living space. With hatches in the roof to allow natural sunlight and ventilation into the room, it also comes with a double bed, a sink, shower (naturally with running water) and a kitchen stove.

Gwyneth Paltrow is starring in the Tod's fall 2008 campaign, but the newly released advertisements have caused an outrage amongst animal rights activists. The actress modeled the Italian company's fall 2008 collection, draped in fox fur, wearing fur-lined boots, and sporting leather, ostrich and snakeskin accessories.

Ironically, Gwyneth Paltrow is known for being one of the more eco-friendly celebrities and her husband, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, is a prominent celebrity vegetarian. Even more so, Gwyneth has infuriated her personal friend, designer Stella McCartney, who does not use any animal products in her gorgeous designs.

But husband and designer-friend aside, she has really enraged animal rights advocacy groups, such as People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and Respect for Animals, causing them to lash out. PETA even went as far as to criticize her parenting skills: "Gwyneth Paltrow won't be the apple of her daughter's eye if she continues to flaunt fur...

Apparently there's a financial reason to Nancy's madness over the drilling issue and her being a proponent of the Texas oil billionaire T. Boone Pickens' "Pickens Plan" to move our nation from foreign oil dependence to domestically produced wind power and natural gas fuel for automobiles. The plan that's touted as a cleaner, more eco-friendly alternative to our current reliance on coal power and gasoline., is a big time money maker for its investors. It's quite an interesting and profitable scheme. Madam Speaker is clearly a sleaze bag.

While Pickens deserves credit for coming up with a creative plan to reduce dependence on foreign oil (and Pelosi deserves condemnation for letting her personal agenda get in the way of what's right for America), America can't let itself be fooled into thinking that drilling here and drilling now isn't desperately needed for the foreseeable future. Developing alternative energy is going to not only take a long time,

London implemented a similar plan in 2003 that was so successful it was extended to some outlying parts of the city in 2007. Today, drivers pay $13 to bring their vehicles into certain sections of London during peak traffic hours. According to the Victoria Transport Policy Institute, London’s plan has significantly reduced traffic, improved bus service and generated substantial revenues. Environmental Defense says the plan reduced congestion by 30 percent, increased traffic speed by 37 percent, removed 12 percent of pollutants from the air and cut fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by 20 percent.

One unfortunately common misconception about "going green" is that doing so means drastically changing ones life or abolishing all luxuries. While a crucial part about living an eco-friendly lifestyle is reducing ones consumption and therefore minimizing ones waste, one thing I love most about trying to live a sustainable life is noticing how doing something the "green" way is often just the smarter way. Using rain barrels to collect rain and reuse around your house is a perfect example of this.

Even if you only use the rain barrel water for a percentage of the water you use around the outside of your house, doing so will help reduce your consumption.

JetBlue charging $7 for pillow, blanket kit

carrier has done away with the recycled blankets and pillows used on its flights, and has started offering an "eco-friendly" travel blanket and pillow that can be purchased for $7 on flights longer than two hours. The pair come in a kit with a $5 coupon to home furnishings retailer Bed Bath & Beyond.

The carrier said last month it expects to collect about $40 million from customers buying seats with extra leg room this year. Its $15 fee for a second checked bag is expected to translate into about $20 million in additional revenue. A ticket change fee, which doubled to $100 in the second quarter, is part of a "basket of fee changes" expected to produce about $50 million in extra revenue in 2008.
