WaMu becomes biggest bank to fail in US history

As the debate over a $700 billion bank bailout rages on in Washington, one of the nation's largest banks - Washington Mutual Inc. - has collapsed under the weight of its enormous bad bets on the mortgage market.

The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. seized WaMu on Thursday, and then sold the thrift's banking assets to JPMorgan Chase & Co. for $1.9 billion.

Seattle-based WaMu, which was founded in 1889, is the largest bank to fail by far in the country's history. Its $307 billion in assets eclipse the $40 billion of Continental Illinois National Bank, which failed in 1984, and the $32 billion of IndyMac, which the government seized in July.

How Astronomers Have Fun (and Nearly Die Trying)

With just seconds of sun remaining, I got it. I finally understood what motivated the scientists to make the exhausting, expensive, and, at times, dangerous journey out here to this scorched, rubble-strewn stretch of the Gobi Desert. Until this moment, as the wall of darkness rushed toward us a tad faster than the speed of sound, I couldn't figure what made a solar eclipse field trip worth the effort. After all, it's nothing more than a shadow, right? But even knowing that, my heart raced. I guess it was the mind-boggling scale that overwhelmed me, putting me in my proper place as a tiny, vulnerable speck on a speck within a universe of titanic events.

Explanation: For a moment on August 1st, the daytime sky grew dark along the path of a total solar eclipse. While watching the geocentric celestial event from Mongolia, photographer Miloslav Druckmuller recorded multiple images with two separate cameras as the Moon blocked the bright solar disk and darkened the sky.

On the left is bright planet Mercury, but many stars are also visible, including the Praesepae star cluster (also known as M44 or the Beehive cluster) in Cancer, above and to the right of the silhouetted Moon. Remarkably, the nearly perfect conditions and wide range in individual exposures allow the composite picture to register the lunar surface and follow the delicate solar corona out to a distance of nearly 20 times the radius of the Sun. In fact, the composite presents a range in brightness beyond what the eye could see during the eclipse.

OK, OK . . . this month can't boast a total solar eclipse or a great meteor shower like August could. But with summer's heat and its bugs on the wane in September, it's so much nicer to just stroll out under the evening sky to enjoy the view overhead.

Over in the west, Venus and Mercury are dancing together in the dusk. Venus itself is in the opening weeks of a six-month evening engagement that will just get better and better toward year's end.

In the south, King Jupiter is holding court amid the stars of Sagittarius. It provides a dazzling anchor to the summer Milky Way, which arches overhead through the Summer Triangle and descends into the easy-to-spot "W" of Cassiopeia.

Todo comenzó con la interpretación de un célebre pasaje del Canto XX de la Odisea (La profecía de Teoclímeno): "...: El Sol ha desaparecido del cielo y una oscuridad nefasta lo cubre todo...". La mención no se referiría a un supuesto Apocalipsis, sino a un dato que podría probarse científicamente: un eclipse total de sol en la Odisea.

Al menos así lo interpretaron el físico Marcelo Magnasco, un profesor vitalicio de física matemática de la Universidad Rockefeller, en Nueva York, y Constantino Baikouzis, astrónomo y diseñador de mapas celestes del Observatorio de La Plata, en Argentina. Ambos iniciaron una exploración por los cielos que acompañaron a Ulises durante unos 34 días de su célebre viaje, hilvanando las pistas de un verdadero rompecabezas astronómico.

Así, se pudo relacionar por ejemplo, el momento citado en el Canto XX de la Odisea, con una fecha exacta: 16 de abril de 1178 a.C., el día en que un espectacular eclipse total de Sol ocurrió sobre el mar Jónico.

Army: soldier suicide rate may set record again

WASHINGTON (AP) — Soldier suicides this year could surpass the record rate of last year, Army officials said Thursday, urging military leaders at all levels to redouble prevention efforts for a force strained by two wars.

As of the end of August, there were 62 confirmed suicides among active duty soldiers and Guard and Reserve troops called to active duty, officials said. Another 31 deaths appear to be suicides but are still being investigated.

If all are confirmed, that means that the number for 2008 could eclipse the 115 of last year — and the rate per 100,000 could surpass that of the civilian population, Col. Eddie Stephens, deputy director of human resources policy, said at a Pentagon news conference.

"Army leaders are fully aware that repeated deployments have led to increased distress and anxiety for both soldiers and their families," Army Secretary Pete Geren said.
