egsnyder
clipper's remarks: One of my favorite wild mushrooms. I've been picking and eating this one for 30 years. It's a great mushroom to dry for long storage and rehydrate any time you're in the mood for mushrooms. Great in stews and soups.

There's nothing like free food. Usually abundant on grassy areas, such as parks, in Eastern Ontario in the fall after heavy rains.

Clip Source: en.wikipedia.org

Marasmius oreades

<img src="http://clipmarks.com/image_cache/egsnyder/512/8E3EAEB2-4DE3-45AB-8119-1D7F9E9B8470.jpg" alt="M. oreades the "Fairy Ring" mushroom." />

Marasmius oreades is also known as the scotch bonnet or fairy ring mushroom. The latter name tends to cause some confusion, as many other mushrooms grown in fairy rings (such as the edible Agaricus campestris, the poisonous Chlorophyllum molybdites, and many others).

Many mushroom connoisseurs are fond of M. oreades[1] and its sweet taste lends it to baked goods that mushroom eaters generally shy away from, such as cookies. Traditionally, the stems (which tend to be fibrous and unappetizing) are cut off and the caps are threaded and dried in strings. The reason why this mushroom is so sweet-tasting is due to the presence of trehalose, a type of sugar that allows M. oreades to cheat death.[2] When exposed to water after being completely dried out, the trehalose is digested as the cells completely revive, causing cellular reproduction and the creation of new spores to pick up again.

Tags: edible wild, mushrooms, fungi

<clipSource>http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Marasmius_oreades&oldid=236363088</clipSource>

India has had bird flu but is banning poultry related products from nations that have had it too - I

clipped by: nedhamson1
clipper's remarks: India has meat eaters but is predominately a vegan nation - but they raise poultry to export and have had outbreaks of avian flu in their flocks.
For countries where bird flu cases have been reported, India has banned imports of live birds, including poultry; bird meat and eggs or their products; pigs and unprocessed pig products; and products intended for use in animal feeding, agriculture or industrial use.

The ministry said the restrictions would apply both to cases of "highly pathogenic" and "low pathogenic notifiable avian influenza".

Tags: avian flu, bird flu, pandemic, bizarre, globalism awry

<clipSource>http://in.reuters.com/article/topNews/idINIndia-35627320080924</clipSource>

Are You Vegetarian? Natural grass fires are evidently more important for the ecology of savannahs than has previously been assumed. This is the finding of a study carried out in Etosha National Park in the north of Namibia. It is the first study to have investigated the complex interplay of the factors fire, competition, moisture and seed availability in relation to a grass species. Periodic fires in semi-arid regions can lead to older tufts of grass disappearing, thereby making room for younger grasses. Writing in the Journal of Ecology, the researchers from the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ), the University of Frankfurt am Main and the University of Cologne say that fire therefore plays an important role in regeneration. The findings are particularly significant for the management of semi-arid nature reserves, in which, in the absence of natural plant eaters, fires are the only practical means of renewing the grass canopy.

Tags: ecology

<clipSource>http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2008-09/haog-fra091908.php</clipSource>

Evolution in a Bottle

clipped by: Mohir
clipper's remarks: Over time the bacteria evolved to better suit their environment, adapting to replicate faster on the all-glucose diet. But one colony suddenly took off, consuming the previously indigestible citrate - a molecule that literally would not fit through the original bacteria's membrane. A new breed of E. Coli had evolved to consume the available resources and, over a multi-generational evolutionary battle, came to outperform the original glucose eaters.

Because of the daily samples, there is now a complete genetic paper trail of the changes (although full identification and understanding of the changes will take a little longer). This is an incredible breakthrough in evolutionary research, and a pretty nice argument to break out in the creationism 'debates' ("Prove evolution!" "Okay, I've got it right here IN THIS BOTTLE!")

Clip Source: www.dailygalaxy.com

Forget Chanel No 5 or absinthe, the most
exciting thing you can get in a bottle is evolution itself. While it
has incredibly obvious results in nature, you can't actually see it
happen - something about having to wait millions of years. Scientists
in Michigan State University have observed it in the lab, and it only
took twenty.

By breeding bacteria in jars Professor Richard
Lenski has been able to make a stop-motion animation of evolution in
action.

He split a single colony of Escherichia Coli into twelve
containers, where each group was then allowed to breed in a
glucose-citrate solution (the species of E. Coli chosen can eat glucose
but not citrates). Every day samples from each jar were frozen,
providing a perfect record of their genetic progress.

Tags: evolution, bacteria

<clipSource>http://www.dailygalaxy.com/my_weblog/2008/09/evolution-in-a.html</clipSource>

50 Graphic Design Blogs

clipped by: polaris7
clipper's remarks: I love top lists! and more if it´s about design, great resource for design eaters... ja ja!

Clip Source: www.davidairey.com

Top 50+ graphic design blogs

It’s not so easy finding quality graphic design authors. If you think buying junk food in small packages will help you eat less, look out —marketers know the truth.

Two new marketing studies found that some people tend to consume
more calories when junk food portions and packages are smaller. For
some, it's because they perceive small packages to be ... get this ... diet
food.

For others, it's just the temptation of small sins.

Manufacturers are releasing more and more products in smaller
packages

in smaller packages promoted as
having just 100 calories. In terms of sales, the tactic has proven successful, past research shows.

Diet food?

In the other new study, Maura L. Scott at the University of Kentucky
and colleagues at Arizona State University assessed people's
perceptions and eating habits of M&Ms in regular and miniature

His career as an artist lasted only 10 years and coincided with frequent bouts of depression and anguish

Among his favorite painters at this time were Jean François Millet, Rembrandt, Honoré Daumier; among his favorite authors, George Eliot, Charles Dickens, and Harriet Beecher Stowe - all of them interested in the poor and dispossessed. Complementing Van Gogh's dismal subject matter of this time were his colors, dark brownish and greenish tones. The masterpiece of the Dutch period is the Potato Eaters (1885), a night scene in which peasants sit at their meal around a table.

Clip Source: www.answers.com

Born on March 30, 1853, at Groot-Zundert in the province of Brabant, Vincent Van Gogh was the son of a Protestant minister.

In early 1877 he clerked in a bookshop in Dordrecht

He left 3 months later to become an evangelist in a poor mining section of Belgium

After much introspection, Van Gogh decided in 1880 to devote his life to art, a profession he accepted as a spiritual calling.

In October 1880 he attended an art school in Brussels, where he studied the rudiments of perspective and anatomy. At this time his cousin from Amsterdam, a widow with a 4-year-old son, rejected him, and he subsequently formed a close relationship with a pregnant prostitute, a move that precipitated a break with his family.

During his Dutch period (1880-1886) Van Gogh executed works in which his overriding humanitarian concerns were overtly manifest.

Tags: vincent van gogh, dutch impressionist painter

<clipSource>http://www.answers.com/topic/vincent-van-gogh</clipSource>

Eat These, Weigh Less?

clipped by: vj2933

Clip Source: www.realage.com

Eat These, Weigh Less?

    Maybe they’re called "magical fruit" in children’s rhymes for a reason . . .

Just not for the flatulence-producing reasons kids obsess about. What really makes beans magical is their potential effect on your waistline: Bean eaters weigh less on average than non-bean-imbibing folks do.

Bean Counting

In fact, bean eaters weigh as much as 6.6 pounds less, according to RealAge expert John La Puma, MD, author of ChefMD's Big Book of Culinary Medicine. (Browse the book online.) Makes sense when you consider beans are full of fiber and protein but low in fat, which means a serving will keep you going far beyond the need-to-munch hour but only make a minor dent in your calorie intake. (Find out which kind of bean packs the biggest antioxidant punch.)

We would be phasing out the corn-ethanol subsidies that are enriching Iowa farmers and impoverishing Mexican tortilla eaters, and we would be repealing the 54-cent tariff on Brazilian sugar ethanol

But it also has its benefits: Public opinion, when it has changed as it has with $4 gas, has an effect. Environmental restrictionists like Al Gore have been selling a form of secular religion: We have sinned against Mother Earth, we must atone and suffer, there can be no argument, but we must have faith.

That was an appealing argument to many — perhaps most — Americans when gas was selling for $1.40. It has a much more limited appeal now that gas is selling for $4.10. The time may be coming when our lunatic environmental policies are swept away by a rising tide of common sense.

<clipSource>http://article.nationalreview.com/?q=ODE4ODJhMDI3M2Y1MzVlZDM1NWIwNTljZjI2Mjc5M2E=</clipSource>

Almonds boost weight loss

clipped by: Fast T friend
clipper's remarks: According to Wien, “The weight-loss benefits of eating almonds came as something of a surprise, since the study was originally designed to evaluate the cholesterol-lowering effects of almonds. As it turned out, the dieters who ate almonds lost more weight than would be expected if they were taking prescription diet pills.”

Clip Source: www.gvnews.com

If you're searching for a snack food that can help you lose weight and gain health, almonds are an excellent choice. For years, many dieters have shied away from nuts, largely because of their high fat and calorie content.

Lead investigator Michelle Wien, Dr.P.H., R.D., found that when she asked volunteers to include raw or roasted almonds in their calorie-restricted diets, their weight-loss efforts were dramatically accelerated.

The study included 65 overweight and obese adults who were placed on one of two diets designed to promote weight loss. The caloric value and protein content of the two diets were equivalent, but only one included a 3-ounce serving of almonds daily.

After 24 weeks, the two groups showed a striking difference in their weight-loss patterns. The almond-eating group lost 62 percent more weight and 56 percent more body fat than the nut-free group. The almond-eaters also experienced significantly greater reductions in waist circumference and blood pressure.

Tags: diet, almonds, fat, lose

<clipSource>http://www.gvnews.com/articles/2008/07/04/columns/columns03.txt</clipSource>
