NEW YORK (The Borowitz Report) - Controversial CNN host Lou Dobbs bade the people of Earth farewell today as he embarked on a long voyage back to his planet of origin.

Standing on a launching pad with his rocket ship at the ready, Mr. Dobbs addressed a crowd of dozens who came to wish him a safe trip and godspeed.

"People of Earth, farewell," he said. "My work here is done."

In his farewell speech, Mr. Dobbs acknowledged the irony of his being an alien but insisted that he had been on Earth legally. Read more.

clipper's remarks: The Aardonyx celestae species dates back to the early Jurassic period. Dr. Yates said the creature found in South Africa stood nearly 6 feet high at the hip and weighed about 1,100 pounds. It was about 10 years old when it died, and its death may have been caused by drought.

The species shares many characteristics with the plant-eating herbivores that walked on two legs, Dr. Yates said. But the new species also has similar attributes to dinosaurs that grew to massive sizes and went about on all fours with long necks and whip-like tails.

Dinosaur find linked to giant plant eaters

Graphic released by Australian paleontologist Adam Yates, based at the University of the Witwatersrand, shows a newly discovered dinosaur species that roamed the Earth about 200 million years ago. Fossils, marked on the outline, were found in the town of Senekal, near Bethlehem in the Northern Free State, in South Africa.

JOHANNESBURG -- A newly discovered dinosaur species that roamed the Earth about 200 million years ago may help explain how the creatures evolved into the largest animals on land, scientists in South Africa said yesterday.

The Aardonyx celestae was a 23-foot-long, small-headed herbivore with a huge barrel of a chest. It walked on its hind legs but also could drop to all fours, and scientists told reporters that could prove to be a missing evolutionary link. WASHINGTON — Designed to scan the heavens thousands to billions of light-years beyond the solar system for gamma rays, the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope has also picked up a shocking vibe from Earth. During its first 14 months of operation, the flying observatory has detected 17 gamma-ray flashes associated with terrestrial storms — and some of those flashes have contained a surprising signature of antimatter.

During two recent lightning storms, the Fermi telescope found evidence that positrons, not just electrons, are in storms on Earth.

During two recent lightning storms, Fermi recorded gamma-ray emissions of a particular energy that could have been produced only by the decay of energetic positrons, the antimatter equivalent of electrons. The observations are the first of their kind for lightning storms. Michael Briggs of the University of Alabama in Huntsville announced the puzzling findings November 5 at the 2009 Fermi Symposium.

The asteroid named 2009 DD45 was about 48,800 miles from Earth. That is just twice the height of some telecommunications satellites and about a fifth of the distance to the Moon.

Although no one noticed at the time, the Earth was almost hit by an asteroid last Friday.

The previously undiscovered asteroid came within 8,700miles of Earth but astronomers noticed it only 15 hours before it made its closest approach.

Its orbit brought it 30 times nearer than the Moon, which is 250,000 miles away.

Astronomers believe the object, called 2009 VA, would have almost completely burned up while entering Earth's atmosphere, causing a brilliant fireball in the sky but no major damage to the surface.

The asteroid was discovered by the Catalina Sky Survey on November 6, 2009. It was then identified by the Minor Planet Centre in Cambridge, Massachusetts as a near Earth object.

It was the third-closest known (non-impacting) Earth approach on record for a cataloged asteroid.

It was the third-closest known (non-impacting) Earth approach on record for a cataloged asteroid.

They monitored a 100ft asteroid that whizzed 45,000 miles above the Earth's surface on March 2 this year. A similar sized object slammed into Tunguska, Siberia in 1908. The impact created a blast so powerful it levelled 1,200 square miles of forest.

Asteroid almost smacks into the Earth

YOU almost certainly missed it - and luckily it missed you - but an asteroid has come within 8,700 miles of hitting the Earth.

Astronomers spotted the object only 15 hours before its closest approach to our planet last Friday.

It followed an asteroid which exploded over Indonesia with the force of three Hiroshima nuclear bombs two weeks ago.

Don't panic! Although the asteroid passed within 14,484 kilometres (9,000 miles) of Earth it measured just (7 metres) 23ft across and wouldn't have dented the surface.

Even had it been on collision course with us, the 7 ,etre (23ft wide) asteroid - known as 2009 VA - is unlikely to have made much of an impact because it would probably have all but burnt up in the atmosphere.

It was the third-closest approach on record for any asteroid that has failed to make it through our atmosphere.

NP, you're as guilty as the unquestioning acolytes in swallowing the nonsense that passes as settled science these days. Is the earth warming? Not in the past 10 years. Human activity is likely to blame? England warmed 4 degrees from 1700-1735 whilst the earth warmed 1 degree in the 20th century - small problem here - the 4 degrees warming was before a little thing called the Industrial Revolution, you know machines, gases and stuff. Climates are changing - Greenland's glaciers have gotten thicker not thinner. Unless you mean low lying areas like the Big Easy circa 2005, the oceans have risen at most 8 inches the past century. Why, the Goracle is so concerned that he bought an oceanfront condo in San Francisco.
