Solar sail gets another chance for launch

IT'S an idea that has been plagued by misfortune. Now, proponents of technology that seeks to propel spacecraft using the pressure exerted by photons from the sun on thin "solar sails" look set for another chance to get their idea off the ground.

Missions by the US non-profit Planetary Society to test solar sail technology failed in 2001 and 2005, because the rockets needed to get them into space malfunctioned. Now they look set for a comeback as early as 29 July, when a tiny NASA spacecraft called NanoSail-D is scheduled to go into Earth orbit.

The aim is to demonstrate the feasibility of deploying sails in orbit. The spacecraft will unfurl four 3-metre-wide sails made of plastic film coated with aluminium. In addition to feeling pressure from sunlight, it is hoped that the sails will experience a slight drag from Earth's outer atmosphere. Similar sails could one day be used to bring normal satellites back to Earth after their missions, reducing orbital clutter.

Butterfly spends the first part of its life crawling the earth, before metamorphosis leads it to spin a home for stasis (known as a cocoon). After transforming, Butterfly is reborn as various beautiful colored winged creatures of the air.

This insect is extremely sensitive to the Harmony of Earth, and is the first creature to leave a damaged ecology. Butterfly's graceful dancing-like appearance on flowers reminds us to find the joy in nature and make it a part of our life.

Butterfly enters our life as a messenger for change. If it comes to us hurt or ill, Butterfly asks us to stop keeping our joy at bay. It may take some time being alone with ourselves to listen to Butterfly's gentle requests that we allow the natural transformation of things in our lives.

ten questions (with sub-questions) that bright kindergartners have asked, thought about asking, or should have thought about

1. Who created God?

This is the first question my Rabbi refused to answer, and now I understand why

2. What was God doing before He created humans?

3. Since we are created in God’s image, does He look or act like us?

4. Why did God stop talking to humans (me)?

If people today claim that they have regular conversations with God, we think they are crazy. Were those so-called ancient prophets also crazy?

5. Why do bad things happen to good people?

6. Does God ever change His mind when we pray?

7. Why is belief so important to God when He judges us?

8. How much better is the worst person in heaven than the best person in hell?

9. Will I be the same person in heaven that I am on earth?

If I can sin on earth, but not in heaven, then I will be a different person

10. Why are there other religions?

After all these millennia, can’t a benevolent God help us get it right?

Morning Edition, July 3, 2008 · When it comes to the upward movement of the Earth's crust, the residents of tiny Gustavus, Alaska, are experts.

"Isostatic rebound is the term for it," explains Morgan DeBoer, taking a break from his sawmill. "You know, land rebounding, coming up, springing up out of the water at an inch and a half a year."

DeBoer has good reason to be up on the jargon. Over the past decades, isostatic rebound has more than doubled the size of his family's seafront property, as the rising Earth's crust lifts new real estate out of the water.

The family even went to court — the case went all the way up to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals — to defend their right to the new land.

"You wouldn't think it would be much," says DeBoer, "but when it's flat land to begin with, any change is significant. We gain probably an acre or so every year." With all this new acreage, the DeBoers have built themselves a nine-hole golf course.

Ship breakers in Bangladesh toil in conditions that resemble hell on earth, breaking rusting hulks by hand for little more than a dollar a day. But should we allow a former French aircraft carrier considered too dangerous for even these workers to be sent to the UK - complete with 700 tons of asbestos?

These men are willing to work in some of the worst conditions on earth for a meagre wage, yet now a ship too toxic for even them is being sent to breakers on Teeside in the UK.

The 32, 700 ton Clemenceau - once the pride of the French navy - has spent the past five years being moved around as officials tried to find a final resting place for the vessel which contains 700 tonnes of asbestos

The ship will be broken up instead by Able UK, which caused an outcry when it brought four rusting US ghost ships to its dock in Hartlepool in 2003. Campaigners against the arrival of the ships claim the firm is making the country a dumping ground for foreign waste

Some UFOs are extraterrestrial spacecraft.
The subject of flying saucers represents a “Cosmic Watergate” (government cover-up of the best data obtained by intelligence agencies).
Visits to planet Earth and this cover-up represent the biggest story of the millennium.
The next step in humanity’s thinking is to go beyond the “Earth bound” mentality. We are part of a bigger picture and members of a populated universe.

Unfortunately, as a scientist who has lectured on the topic “Flying Saucers ARE Real!” at over 600 colleges and over 100 professional groups in 50 states and 18 countries, and appeared on hundreds of radio and TV programs, I have found that anti-UFO arguments so often made in the name of science are based on ignorance of the facts, arrogance about the critics’ “superior” knowledge, and a strong denial of the evidence

Early last year, research revealed that the rise and fall of species on Earth seems to be driven by the undulating motions of our solar system as it travels through the Milky Way

The University of California, Berkeley found that marine fossil records show that biodiversity increases and decreases based on a 62-million-year cycle. At least two of the Earth's great mass extinctions-the Permian extinction 250 million years ago and the Ordovician extinction about 450 million years ago-correspond with peaks of this cycle, which can't be explained by evolutionary theory.

Our own star moves toward and away from the Milky Way's center, and also up and down through the galactic plane. One complete up-and-down cycle takes 64 million years- suspiciously close to the Earth's biodiversity cycle.

Normally, our galaxy's magnetic field shields our solar system from this "galactic wind." But every 64 million years, the solar system's cyclical travels take it above the galactic plane.
