From Dream to Reality: Aviation in the Modern World

For centuries, man has dreamed of flying. As he watched an eagle soaring hundreds of feet over the mountain tops, or a homing pigeon preparing to land, he imagined how it must be to take to the air. As early as in ancient Greek times-illustrated in the myth of Daedalus and Icarus humans pondered the possibility of flight and emancipation from the bounds of earth. Flight meant freedom. Freedom from the bounds of the Earth.

Nevertheless, until the early 20th century, no form of reliable, powered flight had been achieved. Then in a short one hundred years, aviation technology was transformed from the often unreliable wooden, cloth-covered biplanes to supersonic jets and international airliners. What was it that provoked such rapid progress?

In the years between 1903 and the First World War, aviation was in its infancy.

Several events during the 20th century boosted the development of aviation.

The development of civilian uses for aviation progressed rapidly after the First World War.

They're the government... and remember, they're here to help. A bumbling inspector with the Transportation Safety Administration apparently has some explaining to do, after nine American Eagle regional jets were grounded at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport on Tuesday.

Citing sources within the aviation industry, ABC News reports an overzealous TSA employee attempted to gain access to the parked aircraft by climbing up the fuselage... reportedly using the Total Air Temperature (TAT) probes mounted to the planes' noses as handholds.

"The brilliant employees used an instrument located just below the cockpit window that is critical to the operation of the onboard computers," one pilot wrote on an American Eagle internet forum. "They decided this instrument, the TAT probe, would be adequate to use as a ladder."

TSA agents "are now doing things to our aircraft that may put our lives, and the lives of our passengers at risk," the pilot wrote on the forum.

Mr. and Mrs. Ted Arenberg Jean and Ted Arenberg celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with a family gathering at Eagle Ridge Resort in Galena. The couple met as students at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. They married June 19,1948,in Chicago. The Arenbergs have six children: Robert Arenberg of Brooklyn,N.Y.; Thomas (Diane) Arenberg of Mequon,Wis.; Dr. Mary (Dr. George Schroeder) Arenberg of Plymouth,Wis.; James (Kim) Arenberg of Farmington,Minn.; Michael Arenberg of West Bend,Wis.; Dr. Douglas (Dr. Karen Chapel) Arenberg of Northville,Mich. They have eight grandchildren: Liz,Molly,Sally,Carl,Emma,Nicholas,Clark and Brett. After graduation,Jean taught for two years in Barrington,and Ted was employed with Arthur Andersen for 38 years.

Bayview Trail

Distance: Varying

Difficulty: Strenuous

Trailhead: Take Hwy 89 South from Tahoe City approximately 20 miles to the Bayview Campground across from Inspiration Point. Parking is located at the far end of the campground.

Description: This steep trail takes you up the side of Maggie’s Peak into the Desolation Wilderness. 1 mile to Granite Lake, 2.7 miles to an intersection with the Eagle Falls Trail. 4 Miles to Azure Lake and 5 miles to Dick’s Lake. Corral and watering facilities for horses are available at the trailhead.

Cascade Creek Fall Trail

Distance: 1

Difficulty: Easy

Trailhead: Take Hwy 89 South from Tahoe City approximately 20 miles to the Bayview Campground across from Inspiration Point. Parking is located at the far end of the campground.

Description: This short trail affords stunning views of the 200 foot high falls and Cascade Lake. Best time of year is springtime, when runoff from snowmelt is high.

Official Announcement :D

The government today announced that it is changing it's emblem from an Eagle to a Condom because it more accurately reflects the government's political stance.

A condom allows for inflation, halts production, destroys the next generation, and gives you a sense of security while you're actually being screwed.

NEW YORK — Yahoo is riding the wave of location-based services with the launch of a service intended to help users share their real-world location with their friends online.

Yahoo made Fire Eagle available to the public this week. Previously, the service had been available in a private "beta" test since March.

YAHOO: Information on Fire Eagle

After signing up with a Yahoo ID, users can update their physical locations through Fire Eagle's website or from a cellphone with Fire Eagle's mobile site. They can then let the service interact with a variety of desktop, Web-based and mobile applications to let people know where they are. Early participants include Dopplr, a site for sharing travel plans, and Pownce, a site for sending messages and files.

"Location is an extra thing that can transform every site on the Web," he said.

clipper's remarks: She was going to be put down that Friday, and I was supposed to come in on that Thursday afternoon. I didn’t want to go to the center that Thursday, because I couldn’t bear the thoughtof her being euthanized; of her being euthanized; but I went anyway, and when I walked in everyone was grinning from ear to ear. I went immediately back to her cage; and there she was, standing on her own, a big beautiful eagle. She was ready to live. I was just about in tears by then.

That was a very good day.

We knew she could never fly, so the director asked me to glove train her. I got her used to the glove, and then to jesses, and we started doing education programs for schools in western Washington. We wound up in the newspapers, on radio (believe it or not) and some TV. Miracle Pets even did a show about us.

In the spring of 2000, I was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma. I had stage 3, which is not good (one major organ plus everywhere) doing 8 months of chemo.

When Freedom came in she could not stand. Both wings were broken, her left wing in 4 places. She was emaciated and covered in lice. We made the decision to give her a chance at life, so I took her to the vet’s office. From then on, I was always around her. We had her in a huge dog carrier with the top off, and it was loaded up with shredded newspaper for her to lay in. I used to sit and talk to her, urging her to live, to fight; and she would lay there looking at me with those big brown eyes. We also had to tube feed her for weeks.

This went on for 4-6 weeks, and by then she still couldn’t stand. It got to the point where the decision was made to euthanize her if she couldn’t stand in a week. You know you don’t want to cross that line between torture and rehab, and it looked like death was winning.

The Endangered Species Act is Endangered

The agencies responsible for the welfare of endangered species are proposing rule changes that would cut through all the red tape keeping animals such as the bald eagle alive. True to the administration’s tradition of considering the fox before the hen house, officials hope the changes will assist frustrated developers.

If approved, the changes would represent the biggest overhaul of the Endangered Species Act since 1988. They would accomplish through regulations what conservative Republicans have been unable to achieve in Congress: ending some environmental reviews that developers and other federal agencies blame for delays and cost increases on many projects.

“If adopted, these changes would seriously weaken the safety net of habitat protections that we have relied upon to protect and recover endangered fish, wildlife and plants for the past 35 years,” said John Kostyack
