SL Bar Association Offers Free CLE Session in Second Life on Trademarks in Virtual Worlds

The SL Bar Association is offering a free California CLE seminar in Second Life Tuesday, September 9 at 12:00 Noon, Pacific, at the Association’s in-world headquarters (SLURL). The seminar will focus on trademarks, and will be presented by SLBA President-Elect Stephen Wu (SL’s ‘Legal Writer’).

Stephen Wu is a partner in the Silicon Valley law firm Cooke Kobrick & Wu LLP, and is Secretary of the American Bar Association Section of Science and Technology Law. He advises clients concerning e-discovery, electronic records retention, digital evidence, and legal matters relating to information security, privacy, and ecommerce. His litigation practice also includes trademark infringement, other intellectual property, and general commercial litigation matters.

Making Goliath Walk

“This is a David-and-Goliath confrontation, but we believe we’ll have enough stones in the sling to knock this out.”

That is a recent statement from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce when asked whether business lobbyists will defeat the Employee Free Choice Act (EFCA)—a labor-backed bill that cribs from Canadian law and makes joining a union a tiny bit easier. In the imminent confrontation over this almost embarrassingly modest proposal, corporations are actually billing themselves as the underdog—the poor, overmatched peasant David against the Philistine monster Goliath.

To the propaganda-numbed ear, it sounds plausible. History books and Washington press releases have seared a corporate hagiography into the public discourse—one mythologizing business as the brave little guy fighting the good fight against all-powerful union puppet masters—even as labor’s agenda has been stomped for a generation.

Big Business and bought-off lawmakers against workers has been a cruel joke.

Republican Isaac Latterell: Latterell, who bills himself as a family man with eight siblings, said he has a strong sense of family values and speaking the truth.

“My whole life I've been a person who detests fakeness,” he said. “I don't like people lying for their own agenda.”

Latterell said, if elected, he'll be wise with money and defend freedoms. He also opposes raising taxes.

“Money doesn't solve everything,” said Latterell, of Aberdeen. “If you're running a business, you're not going to spend more money to fix your problems. ... I want to make sure every dollar we spend is spent wisely.”

Republican David Novstrup (incumbent): Novstrup, of Aberdeen, is finishing his first term as a state representative.

He has served on the commerce and transportation committees. Novstrup said he's proud of a being involved in a bill that allows cities to remove the limit on restaurant liquor licenses.

WASHINGTON - Americans’ productivity soared in the spring while labor costs declined, two welcome outcomes that should relieve concerns that inflation is getting out of hand.

The Commerce Department reported Thursday that productivity, the amount of output for every hour of work, jumped 4.3 percent at an annual rate in the April-June quarter, a full percentage point higher than economists expected.

At the same time, labor costs fell at an annual rate of 0.5 percent, slightly better than expected.

Native corporations leap into wireless

However, some critics are questioning the outcome of the process that helped the consortium acquire rights to those markets.

Officials from Alaska Native Wireless believe the bids represent the largest acquisition ever of federal communications licenses by a minority-controlled entity.

Alaska Native Wireless, with its partner AT&T Wireless, was the high bidder on almost $2.9 billion in wireless licenses covering 43 markets with a total population of 71 million. Markets include Los Angeles, New York City, Denver, Tampa, Fla., Cleveland, Jacksonville, Fla., Minneapolis, New Haven, Conn., and Portland, Ore.
