I’ll still be pushing to right the balance. I expect to work on it all my life.

…3. I worked for a while with a sister of one of the McLibel defendants. Corporate power distorts our lives, from DRM and the struggle over net neutrality, through the health insurance/employment trap and all the way to the power of lobbyists and the ownership of news media. What ordinary individual would have the resources to pursue a grievance against a large company? Who could hold his patent or his impolitic truth against one determined to pursue him3?

The two ways to address this imbalance are to limit corporate power and to strengthen the individual. And the tool to use in both of these efforts is government; nothing else has the standing or power to do it. Enforcing antitrust laws, strengthening union protections, and yes, reforming health insurance would all create real improvements in individual liberty.

Tags: politics, corporatism, liberty, making-light, healthcare-reform, progressives

<clipSource>http://nielsenhayden.com/makinglight/archives/011537.html</clipSource>

How to Make Backup Copy of DVD on Mac

clipped by: annehathaway98
clipper's remarks: This step-by-step guide demonstrates how to use Mac DVD Copy software to make backup copy of DVD movie on Mac.

Clip Source: www.macdvdcopy.com

Make Backup Copy of DVD on Mac

Mac DVD Copy is a easy to use yet powerful DVD Copy software for Mac user. As many owners of Kindle e-books discovered this morning, electronic books that come rigged with DRM "copy protection," stored on e-book readers subject to Amazon remote control, can be made to disappear at the whims of their publishers, as if they never existed in the first place.

David Pogue reports today in the New York Times that books published by MobileReference, including Orwell's Nineteen Eighty-Four and Animal Farm, were remotely deleted from customers' Kindles over night.

This is Amazon choosing its "content partners" over its customers. There is nothing about copyright law that required these deletions -- if Amazon didn't have the rights to sell the e-books in the first place, the infringement happened when the books were sold. Remote deletion doesn't change that, and it's not an infringement for the Kindle owner simply to read the book.

Tags: 1984, amazon, big brother, copyright, drm, literature, orwell

<clipSource>http://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2009/07/orwell-2009-dystopia</clipSource>

Amazon, Why Don’t You Come In Our Houses And Burn Our Books Too?

clipped by: Lexica

Clip Source: www.techcrunch.com

Amazon began remotely deleting books from Kindles this morning. Illegal books? Nope. Perfectly legal versions of George Orwell’s “1984″ and “Animal Farm”, purchased through Amazon.

Why? Well, apparently the publisher changed their minds about having digital versions of the books available for the Kindle, reports David Pogue. Okay, that’s up to them — from this point forward. But those who already paid for the books, own them. In a word, this is bullshit.

Seriously, why doesn’t Amazon just come into our houses and burn the print copies as well while they’re at it?

Update: As commenter Edward Virtually notes, this action is likely within Amazon’s legal rights. I think that’s pretty obvious or there is no way they would have done it. But that doesn’t mean it’s not complete and utter bullshit too. Everyone who hears about this and has a Kindle will now think twice about buying a book on there. Legal BS aside, this is Amazon shooting themselves in the foot here. Big time.

Tags: amazon, kindle, drm, you-don't-own-it

<clipSource>http://www.techcrunch.com/2009/07/17/amazon-why-dont-you-come-in-our-houses-and-burn-our-books-too/</clipSource>

Netflix Instant Watch requirements.

clipped by: voodoologic
clipper's remarks: For my blog post about Linux, Silverlight, Moonlight, DRM, and Netflix.

Clip Source: www.netflix.com

What are the system requirements to watch movies instantly on my PC or Mac?
