Big snow flakes fell early Friday evening, turning Downtown Boise into a giant snow globe for people on their way home from work. The snow caught many people off guard, including this bicyclist heading down Idaho Street between 8th and 9th around 5:45 p.m. Across the Treasure Valley, tree branches heavy with wet, snow-covered leaves fell on power lines, causing scattered power outages. This is the earliest measurable snowfall in Boise since recordkeeping began in 1898, according to the National Weather Service.

At 10 p.m., the Weather Service said 1.7 inches of snow had fallen. The previous earliest recorded snowfall was Oct. 12, 1969, when a little more than an inch fell. And if the snow wasn't enough, meteorologists say winds across southwestern Idaho will average 25 to 40 mph through Saturday afternoon, with gusts up to 55 mph. Sustained winds of 30 to 40 mph are expected, which can make driving difficult.

That's the driving idea behind South Korean designer Sung Woo Park's conceptual Energy Seed, a stylish street lamp powered entirely by discarded batteries.

Drop a battery into one of the Energy Seed's disposal holes and it'll fall down into a tube. Several batteries can be stacked one on top of the other, daisy-chaining drained batteries into a long-lasting power supply for an LED lamp that will give pedestrians a bit of light on the sidewalk. It's a great way to re-appropriate trash that we'd otherwise consider useless.

NAIROBI, Kenya — There were mixed signals on Wednesday about the progress of the ransom negotiations for the arms-laden Ukrainian freighter that Somali pirates hijacked nearly two weeks ago.

“The pirates and the shipowners have agreed on around $8 million,” said Ahmed Omar, a businessman in Xarardheere, the notorious pirate den near the location where the hijacked ship is anchored. “The ship may be freed today or tomorrow.”

Maritime officials in Kenya were a bit more cautious, saying crucial details had yet to be worked out. For starters, the pirates were asking for guarantees that they would not be captured after releasing the freighter or blown out of the water by the armada of American warships circling them.

“We just want the money,” said Sugule Ali, the pirate spokesman, in an interview last week.

Everyone has lost a few hours to dreaming of what life would be like in the future but rarely do those dreams ever come to fruition. And it seems our hopes for the future have not changed much over the last hundred years. These images, produced in 1900 for a promotional campaign for German chocolate company Hildebrands, depict how Victorians envisaged their future, or more specifically, the year 2000.

From personal flying machines, ships driving out of the sea and glass covered cities; their ideas were really pretty cool. Unfortunately though, not very workable. True, technological advances have come on leaps and bounds and continue to do so but it will be a while before we have inventions like these in our grasps.

ABC News independently checked some of the claims made by John McCain and Barack Obama during the debate tonight.

McCain charged that Obama had the second highest donations of anyone in the Senate from troubled mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

TRUE.

McCain has received $21,550 from employees (nothing from PACs) since 1989

McCain charged that Obama was guilty of driving up pork barrel spending

TRUE

AND FALSE

But if McCain misspoke and meant to say that Obama requested nearly a billion in earmarks, he's not even close. According to the Citizens Against Government Waste's annual Pig Book for 2008 Appropriations, Obama requested 53 earmarks worth a total of $97.4 million.
