This Saturday November 7, the downtown area of Perpignan will accomodate the important manifestation of the 350 years of the Treaty of the Pyrenees, by which the Northern part of Catalonia passed under French administration, before becoming the department of the Eastern Pyrenees in 1790. After a simple recall mémoriel in 1959, it is in 1985 that the first identity demonstration was organized, attracting from now on several thousands of people, in presence, this year, of the direction of the political party souverainist ERC (left republican of Catalonia), established in Barcelona. Ten organizing associations, in a Catalan vision of the History, asserts a feeling of "resistance", but on the other hand, in a French vision, the city council man perpignanais MRC (Republican Movement and Citizen) Olivier Amiel, considers that the term "annexation" of Roussillon in France, usual in Catalonia, goes to "misinterpretation of the history".

Mr. Medaglia and Dr. Tolani rode the subway downtown together… He’d missed the 5:13 train and while he was waiting at Penn Station for the 5:59, a woman came up and said, “You did the CPR on that guy, is he really going to live?”

“I said I think so,” recalled Mr. Medaglia. “She blew me a kiss. She said, ‘God bless you — you did a great thing.’ I just sat on the train home, thinking, ‘Holy Jesus.’ ”

…This was Lieutenant Kelly’s fourth CPR call in 13 years. The three other aideds all died. “Best thing I ever did in my life,” he said…

Having gotten a second chance, Mr. Kiernan, a lifelong bachelor, said he is trying to be a better partner to his longtime girlfriend and is trying to eat more carefully, drink less, and seize each day a little more. “I’m not religious,” he said, “but I keep thinking, ‘Who put that cardiologist on the train?’ Coming home tonight, I looked around the subway car — there wasn’t anybody who looked like a cardiologist.”

FIVE days a week, Michael Kiernan, 50, a computer network administrator, makes the 90-minute commute home

On Friday, Oct. 16, he was in his usual spot when the doors opened at 125th Street. Two court officers he knows usually get on, but didn’t, and he thought to himself that he must be the only one who’d made his connections just right. Then the doors closed, the train started, and he collapsed.

He appeared to be having a grand mal seizure. He was flailing and foaming from the mouth, fists clenched, body tight. I figured the seizure would pass, but in seconds he turned a deep, deep blue. A frightening blue. Someone shouts, ‘Is there a doctor?’ ”

The machine said “charging,” then delivered the shock. The body arched and fell. Still no pulse. Two more minutes of CPR, a second shock. Nothing. “I’m thinking, ‘No way he’s coming back,’ ” Dr. Tolani recalled.

At Least 8 Shot In Downtown High-Rise

At least eight people were injured in a mass shooting inside a downtown Orlando high-rise just before noon Friday, according to the Orlando Fire Department.

The building is near Lake Ivanhoe.

All patients have been taken to Orlando Regional Medical Center. At least four of the eight patients are serious trauma cases. The ORMC ER is closed to patients due to the shootings.

According to Orlando Fire Department District Chief Michael Droege, an unknown number of people are still in the building and could be injured. He said the SWAT team is still trying to pull people out of the building.

said that a former employee came into the office who hadn't worked at the company in over a year.

Orlando Fire Department spokeswoman Vicky Robles said a shooter has not been taken into custody.

"We don't know who they are," Robles said.

Sgt. Barb Jones of the Orlando Police Department said she cannot confirm the status of any of the victims.

Police used a Taser gun to restrain a resident outside of his home on Crain Avenue as it burned at about 4:30 a.m. Sunday.

The resident, Mike Bartlett, said he was returning from downtown for his cell phone when he noticed his sister's room on fire. He ran in to make sure she was not there and continued to find his friends in the basement and alert them of the fire. He said his cousin's girlfriend was sleeping upstairs so he went back in the house to retrieve her.

When he went got outside, Bartlett said police officers were at the end of the driveway. He said he approached them for help, but they dismissed him. As he walked toward one of his friends, he said the officers tackled and restrained him with the Taser gun, giving them no reason for their force.

According to the Kent City Police levels of resistance report, Bartlett used psychological and physical active resistance to avoid arrest. The report stated he was both combative and intoxicated.

Ezra Klein sat down with an insurance industry CEO to try and better understand what’s going on with our health care system. The most interesting part of the conversation (to hear him tell it) was seeing charts that actually assign costs—in dollars—to different units of care (like pills, doctor visits, and lab tests), and then compare those costs to the same units in different countries. He describes the United States column in all the bar charts like “a New York skyscraper that got lost in downtown Des Moines” in comparison to all the other countries. And, looking at the charts, it’s hard not to agree. The takeaway: our health care costs more because we let insurance companies and care providers charge more. In other countries, governments set the rates for different treatments and drugs.

On Friday, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev took to his blog to decry the deaths of millions of Soviet citizens killed "as a result of terror and false accusations" -- and to lament the revisionism that seems to blanket contemporary Russia's remembrance of its past.

"It is still possible to hear that these many victims were justified by some higher state goal," Medvedev said.

The president cited with dismay a poll in which 90% of young Russians were unable to name a victim of Soviet purges and prison camps. Russia must remember its tragedies, he said.

It was a striking departure from the general drift of the country, which takes a nuanced, if not positive, view of longtime Soviet dictator Josef Stalin

But Medvedev, who has often provided a rhetorical softening to the ruling elite's hard-line stances, is regarded as politically weaker than Putin, and so far his more liberal statements have done little to change the Russian status quo.

The Carter House - Battle of Franklin

The Carter House is a historic house situated near downtown Franklin, Tennessee. In that house, the Carter family along with neighbors and servants hid in the basement waiting for the second Battle of Franklin to end. It is a Tennessee state historic site, and it is a contributing property and centerpiece of the Franklin Battlefield, a U.S. National Historic Landmark historic district.

Fountain Branch Carter completed construction of the house in 1830. The federal style brick farm house was accompanied by several other outbuildings

the house and the other three buildings are still intact and illustrate the horror of the Civil War battle with over a thousand bullet holes still visible.

The Carter House played a very important role in the Second Battle of Franklin. Prior to the fight, the house was used as Federal headquarters and the breastworks were set up just south of the farm

After the battle it was used as field hospital aiding both Federal and Confederate wounded.

The brightest light after hours along the stretch of Franklin Street at 15th is a green neon martini glass above the entrance of the Layover lounge.

Gone are the pool-playing patrons, cheap booze and vinyl bar stools. In their place are recycled wood shelves, hand-sewn throw pillows, retro hanging lamps, plush arm chairs and a lot of gold, purple and green.

Think Las Vegas meets Marrakech, circa 1970.

The owners put a creative bare-budget, do-it-yourself spin on the kind of eclectic places scattered about cities around the world. Thus the name, Layover

local DJs operating from a small stage, or music from an Internet juke box installed near the bar and programmed by Martinez and Turner with mod, ambient tunes.

The drinks are in the medium price range. A martini (alas, served less than chilled in my case) and a Seven and Seven cost $16. The plum whiskey buck cocktail, a mixture of ginger beer, fresh lemon juice and plum jam from Martinez's backyard, goes for $8.
