Morrison Bonpasse: As the Chinese Central Bank Governor, Zhou Xiaochuan, stated last spring when proposing a new global reserve currency, it no longer makes sense for the currency of one nation to have such a primary role as the U.S. dollar.

This statement echoes former Federal Reserve Chair Paul Volcker's wise refrain, "A global economy requires a global currency."

Am 22.06.09 hatte die UN zum Gipfeltreffen zur Finanzkrise und zum Thema Stabilisierung des Weltfinanzsystems geladen. Es werden Bestrebungen erkennbar, den US-Dollar in den nächsten Jahren als Leitwährung und als Reservewährung abzulösen, da der Dollar unter der aufgeblähten Wirtschaft im Wert instabil wird. Wird das noch vor den Währungsbestrebungen der OPEC-Länder geschehen oder werden diese ihre Vorstellungen angleichen?

Gerade die BRIC-Staaten als Schwellenländer (Brasilien / Russland / Indien / China ) streben Entscheidungen an. Die Reformvorschläge der UN-Kommision unter der Leitung von Joseph Stiglitz werden von den USA abgelehnt.

US dollar loses 50% of its value against all the other world currencies

I would also suppose that even if someone never travels overseas, he would understand that if the US dollar loses 50% of its value against all the other world currencies (everything else being equal), it means the US is 50% poorer relative to the rest of the world. (Now, this is not entirely correct, since the US has overseas assets that would appreciate in value in USD terms).

Moreover, stock price movements become extremely volatile and erratic in countries with a depreciating currency. In the long run, the depreciation of the currency will usually more than eliminate the gains in local currency terms. So, whereas in 2007 both the Dow Jones and the S&P 500 exceeded their previous highs reached in 2000 in US dollar terms, these indices failed to make new highs in Euro terms. In addition, whereas the US economy expanded in US dollar terms between 2001 and 2007, in Euro terms it actually contracted!

World's biggest yacht blows in

THE world's biggest sailing yacht docked in Darwin with little fanfare.

The 93m Eos luxury super yacht's arrival was delayed twice but it finally moored at Fort Hill Wharf around 1pm on Saturday.

The multimillion-dollar yacht, owned by media mogul Barry Diller and his wife, fashion giant Diane von Furstenberg, made the trip to Darwin from Fremantle.

The Eos superyacht can sleep as many as 16 people in plush accommodations and has a crew of 21.

Designed by luxury yacht leader Lurssen, no extravagance has been left out of the craft, which also includes a 4m world map mural.

Launching of the three-mast 92.92m craft in 2006 knocked the 88.09m Athena off the perch for the title of world's largest sailing yacht.

The Eos has spent most of it's time in dock in Venice, but has also been seen at luxury destinations throughout Europe.
