All three dogs (and their bag of treats) were at Sprite's veterinary visit

We mostly teach our pets to be afraid at the veterinarian's. Every time the animal comes in, she gets a shot -- or at least has her temperature taken in ways too unpleasant to contemplate.

My dogs know that most of the time, the vet's office is pretty much a theme park. I bring along my own treats (such as really yummy fish and venison jerky), and hand them out generously and continuously. I usually bring all three dogs along to each dog's appointment, so there's only a one-in-three chance of a medical procedure of any sort while they're there.

Pyoderma refers to a bacterial infection of the skin that is very common in dogs, but uncommon in cats. Lesions and pustules (inflamed pus filled swelling) on the skin, and in some cases partial hair loss often characterize the infection. Treatment is typically given on an outpatient basis and prognosis is good.

ANIMAL rights groups are up in arms over an annual festival in Peru that serves up hundreds of fried CATS to locals.

The 'Gastronomical Festival of the Cat' – dubbed the 'Massacre of the Moggies' – sees townsfolk in Canete, near Lima, feast on the fluffy pets for two days.

A PETA spokesman said: "“If Peruvians really eat poor old Moggy because they think his meat cures bronchitis, that’s about as bizarre as it gets, although remember that Asians eat monkey bits thinking that will cure their impotence and even Europeans butcher poor old Bessie the cow or Henny Penny the hen, because they see them as nothing more than a bit of nourishment.

“Having toured slaughterhouses for dogs in Taiwan, horses in Texas, and chickens and cows in Europe, PETA’s staff says the last thing we need to do is add yet another poor animal to the list of those being frightened and slaughtered for a taste.”

Hedgehogs can be dangerous for young children because their quills can penetrate skin and have been known to spread a bacteria germ that can cause fever, stomach pain and a rash, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics in a new report about dangers from exotic animals.

CHICAGO - Warning: young children should not keep hedgehogs as pets — or hamsters, baby chicks, lizards and turtles, for that matter — because of risks for disease.

That's according to the nation's leading pediatricians' group in a new report about dangers from exotic animals.

Besides evidence that they can carry dangerous and sometimes potentially deadly germs, exotic pets may be more prone than cats and dogs to bite, scratch or claw — putting children younger than 5 particularly at risk, the report says.

Hopefully it will be illegal for anyone to crop or dock to discourage breeders from mutilating dogs, causing unnecessary pain and risking infection.

New Brunswick veterinarians will soon no longer perform cosmetic surgery on dogs, docking tails or cropping ears to make them stand at point.

Members of the New Brunswick Veterinary Medical Association made the decision because they say it's not in a puppy's best interest to have its ears and tail trimmed just for a certain look.

Cathy Adams, a vet practising in Rothesay, near Saint John, said she cringes whenever dogs come in for these procedures because she believes they are painful.

"Usually, when it's done, it's done between three and five days old. It's done without the benefit of anesthesia. People say it doesn't really hurt them, but they scream when you do it," she said.

The decision to stop cropping and docking in animal hospitals is drawing criticism from some dog breeders and kennel clubs.

Blessing of Animals

As autumn arrives, people in various places may notice something odd.

A procession of animals, everything from dogs and cats to hamsters and even horses, is led to churches for a special ceremony called the Blessing of Pets.

This custom is conducted in remembrance of St. Francis of Assisi’s love for all creatures.

Francis, whose feast day is October 4th, loved the larks flying about his hilltop town. He and his early brothers, staying in a small hovel, allowed themselves to be displaced by a donkey.
