Handler never gave up on lost army dog

The handler of an army-trained labrador that went missing for more than a year says he never gave up hope for the lost dog.

The black Labrador called Sabi went missing in action in southern Afghanistan, during the battle in which the SAS trooper Mark Donaldson won the Victoria Cross.

Now Sabi has been reunited with her Australian unit. The Australian Defence Force says an American soldier spotted the dog last week.

The 10-year-old female was trained to detect explosives like the roadside bombs used extensively by insurgents in Iraq and Afghanistan. This was the dog's second tour of duty.

Soldier spots dog

He says the dog was recovered by a US soldier who can only be identified as John. The soldier was aware the Australians were missing an explosive detector dog.

He says the soldier reportedly gave it some commands it understood.

"When she did come back we were all overjoyed with what happened," he said.

Dog back after a year MIA in Afghanistan

(CNN) -- An Australian special forces dog has been found alive and well more than a year after going missing in action in Afghanistan.

Explosives detection dog Sabi was recovered by a U.S. soldier who found her wandering near an isolated patrol base in the desolate southern province of Oruzgan last week, according to the Australian Government Department of Defense.

John, the U.S. soldier, who was identified only by first name, knew his Australian counterparts were missing an explosive detection dog. He knew immediately that Sabi was not a stray.

When she disappeared, the black Labrador was nearing the end of her second tour of duty in Afghanistan. She went missing in September 2008 when insurgents ambushed a combined Australian, U.S. and Afghan army convoy. Nine Australian soldiers, including Sabi's handler, were wounded during the gunbattle.

Defence officials said Sabi the dog was recovered by a US soldier at an isolated patrol base.

The dog returned to a celebrity welcome from visiting Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and US commander Gen Stanley McChrystal.

Sabi is being tested for disease before a possible return to Australia.

The black labrador bitch was with a joint Australian-Afghan patrol that was ambushed in Uruzgan province in September 2008.

Nine Australian soldiers, including Sabi's trainer, were wounded in the exchange.

After the battle there was no sign of the dog, and months of searching failed to find her. Sabi was officially declared Missing In Action.

it would probably never be known exactly what had happened to Sabi in the 14 months she was missing, but the fact that she was in good condition indicated she had been cared for by someone.

And despite being MIA for more than a year, she showed through a simple game of "catch" with a tennis ball that she hadn't forgotten her training.

I can’t begin to imagine how hard it would be to leave my family for months at a time, especially if my destination were Iraq or Afghanistan. And I don’t know how I could deal with my wife being deployed overseas. These reunion videos—for me, at least—shed a tiny beam of light on how emotionally draining being a military family can be. They’ll also make you want a dog. To commemorate Veterans Day, here are some overjoyed dogs greeting returning soldiers.

Fighting Dogs Get New Life

In July the largest dog fighting raid in US history took place, hundreds of dogs were rescued. Sadly 160 of the rescued dogs had to be put down due to illness, behavior, or injuries. The good news is that 120 of the dogs are now going to foster homes, and hopefully the remaining ones will get to do the same.

This is such a great story because usually all the dogs involved in dog fighting get put down, they’re never even given a chance. Maybe this is the foreshadowing of changes that are going to be put into place so the victim, the dog, isn’t the one punished for the perpetrator’s crime.

On this Veteran’s Day, let us also say “thank you “ to our dogs that serve our military veterans. Our vets return from combat suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), seizures, blindness, and missing limbs.

These dogs intuitively know when a vet suffering from PTSD is getting ready to have a traumatic flashback and can calm the vet and bring their attention back to the here and now. They can warn a vet suffering from a TBI when he/she is about to have a seizure so the vet can put him/herself in a safe place or lie down on the ground.

Veteran’s Helping Heroes provides funding to help train dogs for the American Vet Dog Program. It costs $50,000 for each dog. It takes two years to train a dog and the dog will retire after 8 or 9 years.

What a wonderful program to serve our vets! Happy Veteran’s Day

The K-9 police dog purchased by heavy metal rocker Ozzy Osbourne and his son, Jack, made his way to Muncie last week to spend time with his partner, Muncie Police Sgt. Jay Turner, and train on the streets of Muncie.

“Jack and Ozzy sure came through for the department,” Turner said. “The Osbourne family, they donated the money for the dog without even thinking about it, they just did it, which was very nice.”

Turner received two checks in the mail just a few weeks ago. Both Ozzy and Jack gave the same amount: $4,500.

Jack Osbourne became a good friend to Muncie police after he spent time in the city as a reserve officer during the filming of the CBS reality television series Armed in Famous in 2006. He’s kept in touch with other officers and earlier this year convinced his father to help buy the department a police dog to replace an aging K-9 officer.

Death of God Theology

In the 1960s, DOG, or "Death of God," theology became a buzzword. Completely missing the point of Harvard University's Harvey Cox in his popular book The Secular City, people jumped on the idea that DOG theology meant that what would come to be called "secular humanism" had triumphed. Conservative clergy heaped great scorn on those who even tried to understand what the so-called "DOG scholars" were trying to say.

Time magazine brought the issue to the front burner of public opinion when they placed Thomas Altizer of Emory University squarely in the hot seat. The bold cover story with the words "Is God Dead?" made Altizer a household name.

Most scholars who contributed to Death of God theology were trying to make an important point.

the crucifixion symbolized the end of the historical idea that God was just "out there" somewhere, uninvolved.

The phrase "death of God" represented more a new understanding of God, or of the concept of God, than the destruction thereof.

TAMPA, FL -- "It's heartbreaking and I'm in shock that this even happened."

Michael Chengerian has lived in Westwood Lakes with his precious cocker spaniel Sophie for the last five years, but this afternoon, his little dog lost its life to a very large alligator in his own backyard.

"I let the dog out to go to the bathroom and I had my back turned for just a minute," he said, "And this gator came out of the water, grabbed my dog and pulled him into the water. I heard the dog yelping and there was nothing I could do."

Chengerian still went after the gator to try and rescue his dog. He then brought the dog up onto the bank and tried to resuscitate the dog Sophie, but it was too late.

"It was a cute little cocker spaniel, just an adorable little dog. she was just helpless."

Fish and Wildlife officials said someone might have been feeding the alligator, which was over 8 feet long. Trappers took only a minute to catch it.

LAND O' LAKES, FL -- A man searching for his dog was bitten by a gator when he reached underneath his car early Sunday morning, according to Florida Fish and Wildlife.

Spokesman Gary Morse said 38-year-old Joseph Cannistra was outside his Geddy Drive home about 12:30 am looking for his dog, when he thought he saw his pet lying underneath his car.

There was something underneath, but it wasn't his dog. Officials said a five foot alligator was waiting and when Cannistra reached underneath, it bit both of his hands.

He was taken to University Community Hospital, where he received stitches on both hands and was then released.

The alligator was injured during the incident and later captured.

Morse said it will be euthanized
