CAIRO — Actress Lucy Liu, who has produced a film about children sold into the sex trade in Cambodia, says the fight against human trafficking will be long.

That assessment rings true in the Middle East, where stigma in conservative societies and a lack of data have frustrated activists' efforts. Highlighting those challenges, organizers of several UNICEF-funded programs Liu visited in Egypt did not even want to make details of their efforts public out of fear doing so would stir up controversy and pressure from conservatives.

In Egypt, the sex trade is often hidden under the guise of temporary marriages sanctioned by some religious figures and local authorities. Under these marriages, hundreds of underage girls in rural Egypt are essentially sold by their families for large sums to wealthy visitors from Gulf nations.

Egypt recently passed its first child protection law, which criminalized trafficking and raised the age of marriage to 18.

Hannah Rothschild spent years researching her great-aunt. Apparently this was no easy task, because Rothschild’s family members did not want to talk about the member of their family, “who had so radically, some say eccentrically, reinvented herself”.

Eyes Wide Open, a love story between two Orthodox Jewish men, provoked anger at its screening

A series of controversial Israeli films are provoking outrage and plaudits in equal measure at the London Film Festival.

The best documentary award has gone to one of the year's most controversial films

Defamation is a polemic by Israeli filmmaker Yoav Shamir. In his expose of America's Anti-Defamation League (ADL), he claims anti-Semitism is being exaggerated for political purposes. He argues that American Jewish leaders travel around the world exploiting the memory of the Holocaust to silence criticism of Israel.

He gets inside the ADL, which claims to be the most powerful lobby group of its type anywhere in the world. With unprecedented access, he travels with them as they meet foreign leaders, and use the memory of the Holocaust to further their pro-Israeli agenda.

At one point, an ADL leader admits to Shamir that "we need to play on that guilt".

clipper's remarks: I used to be a great admirer of Mother Theresa. I even met her, heard her speak and was kissed by her. It wasn't until fairly recently I started to question the "goodness" of her work - particularly in the arena of abortion and contraception.

If I was a young/older mother incapable (financially, physically, emotionally, mentally) of supporting and caring for my about to be born child, would I still choose to have it. If I knew, that by allowing this child to be born, the most likely scenario of life that it had to look forward to was an over crowded orphanage, would I still choose to bring that child into the world? If I genuinely, in my heart of hearts knew I was not the mothering kind and my boyfriend also did not want a baby, but our families were putting pressure on us to have one would I be condemned for wanting to "sell my child for $30 to some utter stranger?
