Documentary about America's monstrous national debt is this year's 'An Inconvenient Truth.'

Remember those documentaries you had to sit through in high school about the basic food groups, or the origins of the Bill of Rights? "I.O.U.S.A." isn't in that company exactly, but, like most movies about matters economic, it has a high MEGO quotient. (MEGO was coined by William Safire and stands for "My Eyes Glaze Over.") Having said this, I would be remiss if I didn't also point out that the film's subject – the monstrous national debt, $9.5 trillion and counting – is of the gravest concern. It's this year's "An Inconvenient Truth." Grade: B (Rated PG for some thematic elements.)

The reality, as Alfred McCoy says towards the end of the film, was very different. "We destroyed a whole civilisation, we wiped it off the map. We incinerated, atomised human remains in this air war and what happened in the end? We lost."

The covert nature of the conflict meant that U.S. forces were able to ignore virtually all the rules of engagement operating in Vietnam. Every building was a potential target and the civilian toll was huge.

The situation grew worse in 1970 when U.S. President Nixon authorised massive B-52 bombing strikes on Laos, which remained classified information until many years later.

American planes dropped an average of one planeload of bombs on targets in Laos every eight minutes, 24 hours a day for nine years, making it the most heavily bombed country on earth

PHNOM PENH - It was known as the ‘secret war', a covert operation waged by the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) throughout the sixties and early seventies against communist guerrillas in Laos.

A new film, ‘The Most Secret Place on Earth', to be released in cinemas across Europe later this year, explores this little known conflict.

"I first got the idea to do the film when I visited the Plain of Jars in Laos in 2002," recalled Marc Eberle,36, the German director in an interview with IPS.

Little is known about the Lao conflict despite the fact that it remains the largest and most expensive paramilitary operation ever run by the U.S.

"Laos was the progenitor of the way America fights wars in the 21st century," he says.

Fox News to Air Obama, McCain Documentaries

Fox News Channel has set aside some key cable news real estate next week for one-hour documentaries on Barack Obama and John McCain.

"2008 Presidential Character and Conduct" will premiere at 8 p.m. Monday and Tuesday in a time slot usually held by cable news' top-rated program, "The O'Reilly Factor." Bill O'Reilly will be off Monday and Tuesday, making way for Monday's Obama docu, hosted by Bill Hemmer, and Tuesday's McCain docu, hosted by Eric Shawn. Pamela Browne is the executive producer of both programs.

"This is an in-depth, detailed examination that's beyond what has been broadcast in terms of these typical type of biographies," said Shawn, who like Hemmer is an anchor at the channel.

What neither documentary will do is interview the candidates. Hemmer interviewed Obama in London last month; Shawn interviewed McCain earlier this year. But Shawn said the focus isn't on what the candidates say but instead what they do when faced with challenges.

"We specifically wanted to let the facts speak for themselves and let the people who have known him and examined him speak for themselves," he said.

Months in the works, the specials will dig into the character, lives and actions of the presidential candidates through interviews with family members, friends and associates from their earlier days as well as colleagues in the Senate.

Two former Federal Communications Commission Chairs have asked the Supreme Court to shut down what they call the FCC's "Victorian crusade" against broadcasters. "To effectuate its new clean-up-the-airwaves policy, the Commission has radically expanded the definition of indecency beyond its original conception," warn Newton Minow and Mark Fowler in an amici curiae brief to the high court. The agency has "magnified the penalties for even minor, ephemeral images or objectionable language; and targeted respected television programs, movies, and even non-commercial documentaries."

Minow, Fowler, and four other former FCC biggies have written to the Supremes in support of the Second Circuit Court of Appeals' recent overthrow of the FCC's new "fleeting expletive" policy: issuing citations against Fox TV

John Edwards repeatedly lied during his Presidential campaign about an extramarital affair with a novice filmmaker, the former Senator admitted to ABC News today.

In an interview for broadcast tonight on Nightline, Edwards told ABC News correspondent Bob Woodruff he did have an affair with 44-year old Rielle Hunter, but said that he did not love her.

Edwards also denied he was the father of Hunter's baby girl, Frances Quinn, although the one-time Democratic Presidential candidate said he has not taken a paternity test.

According to friends of Hunter, Edwards met her at a New York city bar in 2006. His political action committee later paid her $114,000 to produce campaign website documentaries despite her lack of experience.

Edwards said his wife, Elizabeth, and others in his family became aware of the affair in 2006.

Edwards made a point of telling Woodruff that his wife's cancer was in remission when he began the affair with Hunter.

In fact there are few things white people love more than being offended.

Naturally, white people do not get offended by statements directed at white people. In fact, they don't even have a problem making offensive statements about other white people (ask a white person about "flyover states"). As a rule, white people strongly prefer to get offended on behalf of other people.

It is also valuable to know that white people spend a significant portion of their time preparing for the moment when they will be offended. They read magazines, books, and watch documentaries all in hopes that one day they will encounter a person who will say something offensive. When this happens, they can leap into action with quotes, statistics, and historical examples. Once they have finished lecturing another white person about how it's wrong to use the term "black" instead of "African-American," they can sit back and relax in the knowledge that they have made a difference.

It was important to me to step away from the whole "list" mentality, in terms of "Learn catleaps and kong vaults and the roll" ... and the obstacle-focus seemed to me to be the most original and simple way to get it done, a method I don't think anyone else had attempted yet.

It was important to me that each section of the vid be able to stand mostly on its own, and ALSO that each section include as many traceurs as possible. So in creating any given section, I first went through EVERY Lisses vid I had, and lifted out and assembled each and every clip dealing with that location.
