Google Chrome Syncs Bookmarks Almost Instantly

Browser and search history are likely desirable bits of data too, but Google offers the option to provide the search history, regardless of browser.

Google Chrome’s bookmark sync has come a long way since I last looked at it. The latest Windows beta build now offers bookmark sync, which by itself may not sound glamorous. But at the tail end of the video demonstration it gets a bit more interesting. If you have multiple computers signed in to Google, adding a bookmark on one computer adds it to the other in a near-real-time fashion. Google is leveraging the XMPP servers it uses for Google Talk to make the magic happen. That’s pretty clever since the first word in IM is “instant.”

Although Google didn’t mention this in their blog post, I noticed something interesting when I performed an initial sync: Google is also leveraging Google Docs for the bookmark data. The sync completion screen tipped me off, so of course I had to go look in my Google Docs account. Sure enough, there’s a folder structure there, complete with my shortcuts.

Instead, GeoCities will probably go down with a whimper today.

Time is up for Yahoo Inc.'s scheduled closing of perhaps the most significant virtual museum in recent history. Years ago a central meeting place for a massive chunk of American Web surfers, GeoCities will lock its doors and take millions of pages offline.

GeoCities allowed anyone to build a custom Web page for free and reserved a small amount of virtual storage to keep pictures and documents. It was perhaps the first mainstream example of an open, participatory and personal Internet.

After months of holding their tongues, insurance industry officials launched a very public attack on the Senate Finance bill Sunday with an analysis that says insurance reform will increase premiums faster than doing nothing. The industry, which didn’t like last week’s CBO report, bought its own analysis and will tout the PricewaterhouseCoopers findings in new ads. The developments have the White House and Finance Chairman Baucus on the defensive. This could be a turning point that the White House and Baucus worked hard to avoid – when industry begins to publicly oppose Democratic reforms. With this report, insurers take a half step in that direction and put Democrats in a dangerous place. If insurers inspire other dissatisfied groups – everyone from docs to hospitals – to take a more aggressive approach in their legislative demands, Democrats could quickly find themselves playing defense against some of the town’s best funded groups when they should be playing offense to pass a bill.

It’s brings up one of the main concerns with ‘cloud’ computing… mainly, what happens when the cloud goes dark.

Cloud computing is sort of the generic term used for using someone else’s storage/processing power over the internet. Hotmail, Google Docs are a couple examples. All your information is stored on their server.

Now it’s a fairly safe bet that Google or Hotmail (microsoft) aren’t going out of business. However, it’s a much different story with smaller companies.

The physicians, all invited guests, were told to bring their white lab coats to make sure that TV cameras captured the image.

But some docs apparently forgot, failing to meet the White House dress code by showing up in business suits or dresses.

So the White House rustled up white coats for them and handed them to the suited physicians who had taken seats in the sun-splashed lawn area.

Commenters at Big Government, yesterday were skeptical about the sea of white lab coats seen in the audience of the White House lawn for the President’s public option photo op, yesterday.:

•Physicians do NOT wear their labcoats outside of the hospital or office. This is a GOTCHA. I also do NOT know of any of my physician associates who support Obamas health plan.

•I was married to a doctor and spent countless hours around them, and when I saw that picture I just thought “HOLY SH!T I’m living in the new soviet union.”

While I have no doubt that Obama had no trouble finding a flock of single payer doctors to show up for his photo op, I do think it’s funny that the White House was desperate enough to pass out white lab coats to make the photo op perfectly-perfect.

Imagine what it will be like with a complete change? How long will it take for a staff member, as well as each doctor, insurance representative, lab tech, etc....to learn what's in those 1000+ pages?

One internal memo on cap-and-trade said that "given the administration's proposal to auction all emission allowances, a cap-and-trade program could generate federal receipts on the order of $100 to $200 billion annually," but the Department blacked out the $100 billion-$200 billion figure. Horner said Treasury redacted the figure because it was "highly embarrassing" for the administration.

Days later, Treasury re-released the same documents without any portions redacted.

Treasury said they are currently considering the appeal.

A libertarian non-profit organization in Washington today announced it was filing suit against the Obama administration for failing to adequately disclose global warming documents.

As we reported two weeks ago the Competitive Enterprise Institute deemed inadequate the Treasury Department's response to a Freedom of Information Act request for documents on cap-and-trade.

Months after the FOIA request, Treasury responded by giving CEI five documents and emails, when the group had expected 50.

"Your response fails any reasonable test for compliance with FOIA and constitutes an effective denial of our request," CEI's Christopher Horner stated in the notice of appeal filed with Treasury today.

In the early part of the decade, doctors clamored for tort reform in response to insurance companies jacking up their rates for malpractice insurance. Now, 46 states have passed some version of it. But ironically, malpractice premiums are lower in states without caps. Doctors did not benefit, and the patients who had their rights eliminated certainly did not benefit. So who came out winners from a decade of destroying the civil justice system?

That would be the insurance industry. Tort law changes made medical negligence cases so difficult to pursue that claims dropped precipitously. Between 2000 and 2006, the amount of money insurance companies paid out decreased by 15%. But that did not help the doctors because insurance companies never passed on those savings. In fact, the amount of money insurance companies took in from doctors increased by 120%.

But now they call for tort law changes under the guise of reducing health care costs

Half of the Doctors I have talked too are not even recommending for their patients and certainly our pediatricians are saying not to get the H1N1 for our kids, which we had not planned to do anyway. If I was these doctors and nurses I would just not get it as the state is just asking for a huge shortage of nurses and docs by doing this. Society needs the nurses and docs, they don't necessarily need to stay at these jobs.

Mandatory flu vaccination splits workers

Despite a planned rally in Albany Tuesday to protest a state regulation requiring health care workers be vaccinated against influenza — both seasonal and swine flu — New York’s top public health official predicts dissenters will ultimately extinguish their anger and roll up their sleeves.

The regulation, which was approved in August, comes with a stinging addendum: Get vaccinated or get fired.

But some nurses and many other health care providers say the regulation violates their personal freedom and leaves them vulnerable to vaccine injury. And they cite deaths associated with the last federal government swine-flu vaccination program in 1976.

Refusing to be immunized against H1N1 because of the vaccine debacle in 1976 “is like saying a plane crashed 33 years ago so I’ll never fly again,” said Dr. Richard Daines, New York State health commissioner.
