Eine nicht-anlassbezogene Speicherung von Telekommunikationsdaten ängstigt viele Bürger. Oft wird dabei allerdings übersehen, dass diese Daten für die Ermittlungsarbeit zahlreicherer Straftaten wichtig sind. Gerade in den Bereichen Körperverletzung mit Todesfolge, Vergewaltigung, Stalking, Amoklauf und Trickbetrug konnte die Polizei in der Vergangenheit Täter fassen. Nach dem Eilentscheid des Bundesverfassungsgerichts wurde dieser Ermittlungsweg gestoppt.

Die Behörden sind immer dann auf Telekommunikationsdaten angewiesen, wenn andere Spuren am Tatort, wie etwa Täter-DNA nicht vorhanden oder auswertbar ist. Vielen Bürgern ist nicht bewußt, dass durch die Auswertung der Telekommunikationsdaten nicht nur bereits begangene Einzeltaten aufgeklärt werden konnten, sondern mit der Überführung der Täter gleichzeitig künftige Straftaten verhindert wurden. Dies kam bisher allen Bürgern zu Gute.

Bürgerrechte sollten nicht nur Abwehrrechte gegen den Staat, sondern auch gegen Kriminelle einschließen,

clipper's remarks: I believe genetic testing should be an option, not a requirement. That may be a good principle for adults, but the call is for testing to be done on 'at risk' children under 10. I'd be surprised if they could find anyone in the world that wasn't subject to some genetic risk or another. Still, a DNA Database is as good as a chip, or an ID card, and much better than a finger print...but I'm a cynic..or perhaps an optimist with experience.

Dear Tide:

I am writing to say what an excellent product you have! I've used it all of my married life, as my Mom always told me it was the best. Now that I am almost forty and with kids, I find it even better!

In fact, about a month ago, I spilled some red wine on my new white blouse. My inconsiderate and uncaring husband started to belittle me about how clumsy I was, and generally started becoming a pain in the neck. One thing led to another and somehow I ended up with his blood on my new white blouse! I grabbed my bottle of Tide with bleach alternative, to my surprise and satisfaction, all of the stains came out!

In fact, the stains came out so well the detectives who came by yesterday told me that the DNA tests on my blouse were negative and then my attorney called and said that I was no longer considered a suspect in the disappearance of my husband.

Well, gotta go, have to write to the Hefty bag people

Mummified remains from 1948 plane crash identified

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Nine years of sleuthing, advanced DNA science and cutting-edge forensic techniques have finally put a name to a mummified hand and arm found in an Alaska glacier.

The remains belong to Francis Joseph Van Zandt, a 36-year-old merchant marine from Roanoke, Va., who was on a plane rumored to contain a cargo of gold when it smashed into the side of a mountain 60 years ago. Thirty people died in the crash.

"This is the oldest identification of fingerprints by post-mortem remains," said latent fingerprint expert Mike Grimm Sr., during a teleconference Friday, during which the two pilots who found the remains, genetic scientists and genealogists talked about the discovery.

Human cells somehow squeeze two meters of double-stranded DNA into the space of a typical chromosome, a package 10,000 times smaller than the volume of genetic material it contains.

"It is like compacting your entire wardrobe into a shoebox," said Riccardo Levi-Setti, Professor Emeritus in Physics at the University of Chicago.

Now research into single-celled, aquatic algae called dinoflagellates is showing that these and related organisms may have evolved more than one way to achieve this feat of genetic packing.

Packing the whole length of DNA into tiny chromosomes is problematic because DNA carries a negative charge that, unless neutralized, prevents any attempt at folding and coiling due to electrostatic repulsion.

In humans and mammals, proteins called histones partially neutralize the DNA's negative charge.

Fish Tale Has DNA Hook: Students Find Bad Labels

Many New York sushi restaurants and seafood markets are playing a game of bait and switch, say two high school students turned high-tech sleuths.

In a tale of teenagers, sushi and science, Kate Stoeckle and Louisa Strauss, who graduated this year from the Trinity School in Manhattan, took on a freelance science project in which they checked 60 samples of seafood using a simplified genetic fingerprinting technique to see whether the fish New Yorkers buy is what they think they are getting.

They found that one-fourth of the fish samples with identifiable DNA were mislabeled. A piece of sushi sold as the luxury treat white tuna turned out to be Mozambique tilapia, a much cheaper fish that is often raised by farming. Roe supposedly from flying fish was actually from smelt. Seven of nine samples that were called red snapper were mislabeled, and they turned out to be anything from Atlantic cod to Acadian redfish, an endangered species.

Methods used to crack the dress code of Oetzi the Iceman could help the clothing industry separate fakes from the real thing, a new study shows.

When analysing samples of the 5000-year-old Neolithic clothing on Oetzi's mummified remains, "we found the hairs came from sheep and cattle, the type of animals herdsmen care for during their seasonal migrations," says Klaus Hollemeyer of Germany's Saarland University and lead researcher of the study.

Specifically, his coat and leggings were made from sheep's fur and his mocassins were of cattle origin, according to the study.

The results are published in the journal Rapid Communications in Mass Spectrometry.
