Complete Genomics, a Silicon Valley company backed by venture capitalists, produced complete sequences of three people’s DNA at an average cost of $4,500, accelerating the race to develop faster, cheaper gene-mapping systems

That’s about one-tenth as cheap as the $48,000 effort reported in August by Helicos Biosciences Corp. of Cambridge, Massachusetts. The first human genome map was completed by researchers in 2001 at an estimated cost of more than $100 million, according to a report published today in the journal Science. Complete Genomics funded the research.

Helicos, Illumina Inc. of San Diego, Pacific Biosciences Inc. of Menlo Park, California, and Roche Holding AG of Basel, Switzerland, are competitors trying to develop technology that would map the DNA of individuals for less than $1,000 and to sell systems to government and academic researchers. Already they have the most comprehensive DNA database of citizens in the world (it has taken an EU court ruling to restrict the holding of innocent citizens DNA to 6 years) now they will be monitoring and storing every call, text, email and website a citizen visits. Sad times, shame this news did not come out of the 5th of November...

Every phone call, text message, email and website visit made by private citizens is to be stored for a year and will be available for monitoring by government bodies.

All telecoms companies and internet service providers will be required by law to keep a record of every customer’s personal communications, showing who they have contacted, when and where, as well as the websites they have visited.

The Home Office admitted that only one third of respondents to its six-month consultation on the issue supported its proposals, with 50 per cent fearing that the scheme lacked sufficient safeguards to protect the highly personal data from abuse.

Chris Huhne, the Liberal Democrat home affairs spokesman, has criticised the amount the scheme will cost for what he said is effectively “state spying”.

John Yates, Britain’s head of anti-terrorism, has argued that the legislation is vital for his investigators.

The Washington Times has an article this morning about a report of a survey from Civic Enterprises that advises local and national leaders to tap into the reservoir of talent in today’s returning veterans instead of looking at the veteran community as a burden and damaged goods;

The results of the survey, being released Wednesday, show that 90 percent of returning veterans want to continue to serve their communities in some capacity.

“The public perception is that they are damaged in some way when they come back,” said John Marshall Bridgeland, chief executive of Civic Enterprises. “They view veterans as already having served their country and think they should be left alone because they have given the ultimate sacrifice, risked their lives, and that their service is done.

“But what this survey shows is that service is embedded in their DNA,” Mr. Bridgeland said. “They believe they have a lot to teach, especially to young people.”

Spider webs hold the key to stronger bioadhesives

Spiders are remarkable animals: with over 40,000 classified species, they are among the most diverse known to man and can adapt to the most radical climatic conditions. The silky substance they produce to spin webs has been extensively studied and is known to rival steel in strength: a less-known fact, however, is that the "glue" that holds it all together is just as remarkable, and could soon become the key to producing stronger bioadhesives to replace petroleum-based products.

Supported by the National Science Foundation, a team led by Omer Choresh from the University of Wyoming has in fact recently reported on an extensive study involving the DNA sequencing of the orb-weaving spiders Nephila clavipes and Araneus gemmoides. The group identified two sophisticated proteins that have evolved over millions of years and are believed to be responsible for the glue's strength.

One Family’s Roots, a Nation’s History

In an article published on Wednesday, The Times reported on Michelle Obama’s ancestry, tracing her maternal line back to her great-great-great-grandparents, a slave girl and a white man, and their son, Dolphus T. Shields, who was born in the 1850s.

While these findings tell of Michelle Obama’s roots, for many Americans her family’s story will also bring into focus a common narrative, which runs through the history of this nation. We asked some historians and writers, why has it taken so long for Americans to appreciate these deep multiethnic connections?

As we have shown in the “African American Lives” series on PBS, fully 58 percent of African Americans have at least 12.5 percent European ancestry. Only 5 percent, in spite of widespread myths to the contrary, have as much Native American ancestry.

Nanoparticles may Damage DNA – Study

A curious finding was revealed yesterday by researchers from the University of Bristol, UK, challenging the capacity of nanoparticles and medical treatments in causing damage in the DNA structure. The experiment was made to see if a nanoparticle can damage the DNA of cells at a certain distance even when the cells are placed behind an impassable barrier of tissue. The said tissue barrier was about four cells deep, and is made from a “BeWo” human cancer cell. It is unique compared to other cell type found in the body as it become a standard cell line and this type of cell is very fit to work for laboratories. The nanoparticle used in the experiment however is a 30-nanometre-wide bead of surgical cobalt-chromium alloy, in which is used on a larger scale in making surgical implants such as hip prostheses.

The Eastern Cougar has become somewhat like big foot in some parts of Ontario, particularly Southern Ontario; while they once thrived in that region, the last documented living cougar in Ontario was recorded in 1938. Around this stage the Eastern Cougar was moved to the extinct list in the province of Ontario in Canada; however, a number of reported and confirmed sightings over the past decade have caused experts to reconsider if the cougar

is truly extinct in Ontario, or if it’s simply endangered.

Since 2002 alone, there have been over 500 reported sightings in Ontario

While very few of these sightings have actually been confirmed; there is enough DNA evidence collected through hair and Cougar scat to indicate that the Eastern Cougar is still alive and well in Ontario, though the true numbers cannot be confirmed.

Meanwhile, many such scanners are reportedly using terahertz (THz) waves, the radiation that fills the slot in the electromagnetic spectrum between microwaves and infrared. Emerging evidence suggests that although the forces generated are tiny, resonant effects allow THz waves to unzip double-stranded DNA, creating bubbles in the double strand that could significantly interfere with processes such as gene expression and DNA replication.

"Anything that interferes with DNA replication can cause cell death," said geneticist Andrew Lau. "Cell mutations and chromosomal aberrations would likely be more common once such scanners are implemented." Lau stated that the cumulative radiation would likely affect passengers in the long-term.

With a wealth of online guides, biochemical supply companies and even craigslist cryogenic equipment, hobbyists or collectives like the Cambridge group "DIYbio" are enabling determined individuals to engineer their own organisms.

The self-titled "biohackers" paint a picture of "citizen scientists", freeing genetic engineering from the stuffy confines of university and corporate labs. We would point out that anybody keen on freeing anything from a containment lab might not have a full understanding of what they're doing.

We don't doubt that many useful results will come out of the DIY DNA diversion

unquestionable is that the vast majority of these projects will be only beneficial, at worst failures which achieve nothing, and any imagined terrorist threats are vastly overstated.

The researchers found that most people in countries widely described as collectivist have a specific mutation within a gene regulating the transport of serotonin, a neurochemical known to profoundly affect mood.

In China and other east Asian nations, for example, up to 80 percent of the population carry this so-called "short" allele, or variant, of a stretch of DNA known as 5-HTTLPR.

Earlier research has shown the S allele to be strongly linked with a range of negative emotions, including anxiety and depression.

Critically, it is also associated with the impulse to stay out of harm's way.

By contrast, in countries of European origin that prize self-expression and the pursuit of individual over group goals, the long or "L" allele dominates, with only 40 percent of people carrying the "S" variant.

Bolinsky says what you see in the video actually happens much, much faster in real life — in a fraction of a fraction of a second. So this is a very slow motion version of cellular activity.
