You will also need some tools and supplies: needle and thread, pins, pliers, scissors, and something to cut the umbrella ribs, such as tin snips, bolt cutters, or cutting pliers.

Unscrew the top of the umbrella.

The cloth part of the umbrella with the ribs attached should be separate from the stem now. Clip off two ribs opposite each other, and save them for ear frames.

Pin the umbrella halves to the sleeves and sides of the sweatshirt, starting at the armpits.

Here's the gap where the ribs stick through. This will give you some flexibility of movement when you're wearing it.

Take the two extra ribs and trim extra points off so that you can make a (very uneven) tripod out of them.

You'll need someone (or a wig frame or mannequin head) to help you with this part.

Recently, I came up with a fun project that captures a moment in a child’s life, and creates a unique fashion statement. Here’s how to make a customized silhouette T-shirt that features your precious tots.

For this project, you’ll need:
1. A child who is willing to cooperate for photo taking
2. Digital Camera
3. Printer
4. Standard computer paper
5. Freezer Paper (found at the grocery store, in the plastic wrap aisle)
6. Pencil or Pen that draws crisp lines
7. Tape
8. X-Acto Knife with sharp blade (found at craft or hardware stores)
9. Old magazine or piece of thick cardboard
10. Iron
11. T-shirt of your choice (Try American Apparel, Alternative Apparel or Article 1 for green blank tees)
12. Fabric Paint of your choice
13.

<clipSource>http://www.uwants.com/viewthread.php?tid=6285414&extra=page%3D1&page=29</clipSource>

Eat Your Heart Out, Martha: Bubbly Magnetsse! Dip your brush into the Mod Podge glue and brush the glue onto your design. Center your marble over the design and stick it to the pattern. Allow the glue to dry for fifteen to twenty minutes. If you are doing more than one magnet, on the same sheet, repeat the process on the paper or move on to your next sheet of paper.

Once your glue has dried, cut around the marbles, as close to the edges as possible. You'll need a plastic water, soda or juice bottle. I like the clear plastic so I can see if we've got any flies.

2. Cut off the top 1/4 of the plastic bottle and keep the two pieces. Make sure you remove the cap before you go any further (I forgot to and had to take the thing apart to remove the cap).

3. Turn the upper 1/4 with the neck down into the lower remaining section (see the photo).

4. Tape the two pieces together so that you have a tight seal.

5. Pour in some apple juice, apple cider vinegar or some wine.

Just place your DIY fruit fly trap in a place that seems to have lots of fruit flies and wait for the results. As you can see in the photo we've caught quite a few fruit flies in our DIY fruit fly trap.

<clipSource>http://www.homeconstructionimprovement.com/2008/09/diy-fruit-fly-trap.html</clipSource>

Economic times may lead to a DIY Renaissance

clipped by: spirithiker
clipper's remarks: How many times have you been at a crafts fair and looked at an object for sale and said "I can build that"?

Then why not do it? Buying the materials may sometimes cost a little more than just buying the product but you have more of a 'connection' to the item if you build it yourself. And you may have leftover material to start another project.

Also, DIY is a form of 'revolution' that says we do not have to be dependent on others to have what we want. This is one reason why I enjoy growing my own food, aside from the greater variety and fresher quality than what I get at the supermarket, I don't have to worry about pesticides and other contamination.

Who knows, you may discover a hidden talent.

Clip Source: lifehacker.com

While Americans brace ourselves in these scary economic times, blogger Mikey Sklar says it's time to learn hands-on skills like building, wood working, growing food, canning, and welding.

As we slide deeper into what's being now called the 'greater depression' I suggest we consider this collapse is also the renaissance in disguise. If you're tempted to savor what was: money, consumerism and greed, consider how little life it contained.

"I've given up on society and am learning to do everything myself,"

When we built a world on top of one that was given to us and we thanked ourselves for it we parted ways with the natural world

Being able to make, fix, repair, and build might be the most important skills to develop. We really only have each other, and I think we're all better off when we're able to be self-reliant when we need to be.

Tags: economy, diy, found talent, self satisfaction

<clipSource>http://lifehacker.com/5056069/the-greater-depression-can-be-a-diy-renaissance</clipSource>

Make Your Own Natural Dishwasher Powder

clipped by: thisnamecantbetaken

Clip Source: www.re-nest.com

How To: Make Your Own Natural Dishwasher Powder

great DIY cleaning formula we found online that can save you quite a bit of money compared to store bought dishwashing cleaners. Scholarships and work-trades are also available. It's a small price to pay to obtain invaluable skills for navigating the urban economy of tomorrow.

The next weekend workshop will be held from September 27-28 in Albany, NY.

Clip Source: www.realitysandwich.com

Permaculture Boot Camp

Renee Verdier

R.U.S.T. is an intensive weekend seminar in urban ecological survival skills organized by the Rhizome Collective, a Texas-based environmentalist nonprofit organization. Its workshops focus on skills related to building autonomous communities in modern cities. Participants engage in hands-on demonstrations of permaculture methods such as low-tech bioremediation, rainwater harvesting, aquaculture, DIY air purificaiton, and various forms of alternative energy. Seminars address topics of social justice ranging from dual anarchism to post-petroleum economics.

Put two kernels in, and when one has popped, pour in 1/3 cup of pop corn (white or yellow) and cover pan. When corn begins to pop, shake constantly allowing steam to escape from popping kernels–otherwise popcorn will lose its crunch. Remove pan from heat immediately when popping stops or it will burn. Pour into a large bowl and season to taste.

<clipSource>http://www.care2.com/greenliving/dangers-of-microwave-popcorn.html</clipSource>
