Men are more likely to divorce a spouse diagnosed with cancer than are women, according to a study of partner abandonment co-authored by a Seattle cancer specialist.

Researchers were surprised that when a woman was the cancer patient, she was likely to be abandoned by her spouse 20.8 percent of the time. When the man was the patient, the study said, he was likely to be abandoned less than 3 percent of the time. Overall the divorce rate, confirmed as in other studies, was 11.6 percent.

The Opinion "Freedom isn't free" has died after a brief illness, owing in large part to its inability to pay for badly needed medical treatment. Having spent its early years being invoked to shut up dirty fucking hippies, its later years degraded into increasingly violent confrontations with health insurance companies and their motto "Health Care Isn't Free, It Isn't Even Health Care." With no more Free Time on its hands, it joined the ranks of the approximately 45,000 Americans who die every year because, well, you already know why.

Born during the era of The Vietnam War Isn't Free it was viewed as a comforting remonstration against anyone who ever pussifyingly questioned the rightness of our nation's bloody habit of killing brown people in far away lands.

Having married its childhood sweetheart (Sex Isn't Free) only to discover its mate wanted to keep its night job, it sought a divorce (that wasn't Free) and lived out the rest of its years as a Free Spirit.

WELCOME to home interrupted, Leslie Williams said, opening the door to what appeared to be just the opposite: a bright TriBeCa loft with near-lapidary finishes.

A slight, blue-jean clad figure, Ms. Williams padded barefoot past the smoky green onyx panel and the Venetian plastered walls in the front hall, where old-fashioned filament bulbs hung like giant fireflies from the ceiling. There were 19th-century wallpapers and 60’s era fixtures designed by Arne Jacobsen, hand-made beech kitchen cabinets and pickled maple floors, and a 14-foot ash table that marched alongside a white-washed brick wall.

“I’ve put a lot of my life in a box to be married,” she said. “I’m taking the box down. I’m going to India. I want to go to Egypt.”

Sean Penn's 16-year-old son, Hopper Jack, was arrested sometime last week, according to two sources near the investigation who spoke exclusively with RadarOnline.com.

The younger Penn was taken into custody by the L.A. County Sheriff's department. Because he is a minor, authorities will not release details as to why he was arrested or if any charges have been filed.

A senior L.A. County Sheriff's source did tell RadarOnline.com that Hopper Jack Penn was busted at the school he attends in the posh Malibu
area.

The hospital told M. not to waste time in dissolving the marriage. For five years after any divorce, her assets could be seized — precisely because the government knows that people sometimes divorce husbands or wives to escape their medical bills.

My friend M. — you’ll understand in a moment why she’s terrified of my using her name — had to make a searing decision a year ago. She was married to a sweet, gentle man whom she loved, but who had become increasingly absent-minded. Finally, he was diagnosed with early-onset dementia.

The disease is degenerative, and he will become steadily less able to care for himself. At some point, as his medical needs multiply, he will probably need to be institutionalized.

The hospital arranged a conference call with a social worker, who outlined how the dementia and its financial toll on the family would progress, and then added, out of the blue: “Maybe you should divorce.”

“I was blown away,” M. told me. But, she said, the hospital staff members explained that they had seen it all before, many times. If M.’s husband required long-term care, the costs would be catastrophic even for a middle-class family with savings.

A 2004 study by the Institute of Medicine, a branch of the National Academy of Sciences, found that lack of health insurance causes 18,000 unnecessary deaths a year. That’s one person slipping through the cracks and dying every half an hour.

In short, it’s a good bet that our existing dysfunctional health system knocks off far more people than an army of “death panels” could — even if they existed, worked 24/7 and got around in a fleet of black helicopters.

So, for those of you inclined to believe the worst about President Obama, think it through. Suppose he is indeed a secret, foreign-born Muslim agent who is scheming to undermine American family values while killing off as many grandmothers as possible.

The previous verse provides the answer: “He seeks godly offspring” (Malachi 2:15 NKJ).
