Children facing adult-size health issues

In a single generation's time, type 2 diabetes has become so prevalent in children it's no longer known by its traditional label of "adult-onset" diabetes.

With the link between diabetes and obesity firmly established, worries about weight gain and finding time to exercise that used to solely nag at adults are now a concern for kids and their parents.

The stakes are much higher for children with type 2 diabetes because they will have to live with the disease and its devastating effects for a much larger part of their lives.

"In the past, type 2 diabetes was considered to be the diabetes of adults," said Dr. Beatriz Rodriguez, a diabetes researcher and professor at the University of Hawai'i John A. Burns School of Medicine.

The recent alarm over childhood diabetes is only "the tip of the iceberg," said nurse practitioner Lisa Zick-Mariteragi, who works with the chronically ill at the Waianae Coast Comprehensive Health Center.

A network of around 80,000 computers worldwide is being readied for a deluge of data when the Large Hadron Collider starts up, marking a new phase in the use of the web.

The machine will slam subatomic particles called protons together to recreate conditions not seen since an eyeblink after the Big Bang of creation and explore new realms of nature, including finding the Higgs particle that plays a starring role in current theory, holding it together, and helping to endow matter with mass.

The data will be used by around 10,000 researchers around the world.

Healesville Sanctuary in Victoria is celebrating Father's Day with one of its Tasmanian devils becoming a father for the first time.

The announcement coincides with Threatened Species Day and is part of the Tasmanian devil breeding program, aimed at ensuring the animal's survival.

A contagious cancer disease has now affected 60 per cent of devils in Tasmania and has led to mainland breeding centres being set up.

Healesville's curator of life sciences Russell Traher says the joey's birth is significant for the Sanctuary.

"It's the first Devil we've produced as part of the mainland ark, we've got a number of partners on the mainland that we're working with," he said.

"Zoos in another three states, and this devil is about four months old and she should start coming out of the pouch in the next couple of weeks."

PARIS (AFP) — US scientists have unveiled the most complete genetic profile ever attempted of glioblastoma, a common and deadly form of the brain cancer that US Senator Edward Kennedy is battling.

The research uncovered a host of genetic alterations linked to the disease, including three previously unknown mutations found in at least three-quarters of tumour samples analysed.

It may also explain why, in some cases, standard chemotherapy treatment for brain tumours works at first but then loses its ability to beat back tumour growth.

The most unexpected finding, said Chin, was that a commonly used chemotherapy treatment called temozolomide may provoke a "resistance mechanism" that compromises genes critical for DNA repair.

The result is new tumours with a large number of DNA mutations and a higher tolerance for chemotherapy.

Mostly, it's a pretty good deal to be rich and famous in America -- unless you come down with a dreaded disease and someone leaks your medical information. What do you do? What can you do?

As Christina Applegate discovered recently, the options are limited.

She is just the latest celebrity to find her medical troubles in a tabloid. Patrick Swayze, Britney Spears, Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, Dennis Quaid, George Clooney, Farrah Fawcett -- all in recent years have seen information from their medical records, or those of loved ones, spread in the press and on the Internet -- without their permission and sometimes in violation of the law.

Sometimes leaks stem from happenstance.

"I've been at the doctor's office and had another person in the waiting room call and report that I was there -- I think it's appalling," says actress Jennifer Garner.

Amidst rumors that Bristol Palin could possibly be the mother of her little brother Trig, the Palins have stated that Sarah Palin is the mommy and have supported this claim by saying that:

A. Bristol Palin was out of school for the five months leading up to the birth of Trig due to mono not to give birth
B. Bristol is five months pregnant, meaning her child’s conception occurred before Trig was born

That brings up some interesting questions. First of all, if Bristol was sick with mono how could she have gotten pregnant? Mono is a highly infectious disease. Her parents kept her out of school, but let her go out long enough to get pregnant? Doesn’t that raise further questions about how effective the Palins are as parents? Additionally how was she able to get in a car accident and three traffic violations if she was sick at home with mono?

SCIENTISTS behind Dolly the sheep may develop better treatments for schizophrenia and motor neurone disease within 20 years, it has been reported.

Work has started in Edinburgh using stem cells from human skin, donated by patients at the Western General Hospital.

The experts who cloned the sheep believe they could have a breakthrough within years to help people suffering from diseases of the nervous system.

Speaking at the Scottish Stem Cell Network conference yesterday, Sir Ian Wilmut, behind the project, reportedly said: "There's the possibility that in ten or 20 years there will be much more effective treatments for these diseases because of these skin cells."

The team of scientists – led by Edinburgh University's David Porteous – is working with induced pluripotent stem cells, which can turn into any cell in the human body.

People once conquered by Rome at greater risk of HIV

Researchers found that people who live in lands conquered by the Roman army have less protection against HIV than those in countries they never reached

They say a gene which helps make people less susceptible to HIV occurs in greater frequency in areas of Europe that the Roman Empire did not stretch to.

The gene lacks certain DNA elements, which means HIV cannot bind to it as easily and is less able to infect cells.

People with the mutation have some resistance to HIV infection and also take longer to develop AIDS, reports New Scientist.

A study of almost 19,000 DNA samples from across Europe showed the gene variant seemed to dwindle in regions conquered by the Romans.

It is not clear why this is so since the spread of HIV - which began in the early 1980s - is too recent to have influenced the distribution of the variant.

In three new studies that could redefine how cancer is viewed, researched, and treated, scientists have created a detailed map of the genetic mutations that underlie two of the deadliest forms of the disease: pancreatic cancer and glioblastoma

Scientists have known for decades that cancer develops in response to genetic changes that cause cells to grow and divide uncontrollably. But uncovering each of these changes, and understanding how they lead to disease, is a Herculean task--one that involves sequencing and analyzing upward of 100 different kind of tumors, with hundreds of different patient samples of each.

And while some believe that systematically cataloging the mutations could provide unprecedented insight into fighting or even preventing cancers, others believe that the high cost of such research might not be worth the rewards. These papers provide the first glimpse at what the rewards could be.
