What a joke.

The Republicans are FEMA. The Republicans are a still devasted New Orleans. The Republicans are stealing billions of dollars from taxpayers and putting profit into the pockets of Wall Street bankers. (maybe even TRILLIONS, with this latest bailout of failed mortgage companies Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac).

The Republicans have led us into a war losing 4,000,plus of our own troops and now probably having killed 500,000 Iraqi's or more, cost us more billions (and maybe TRILLIONS) -- and this is for facts we now know are not true...Iraq had no connection to 9/11 and no WMD's

But, forget all that. Amnesia. Vote for McCain. In the space of two weeks, Hurricane Gustav has caused an estimated $3 billion in losses in the U.S. and killed about 110 people in the U.S. and the Caribbean, catastrophic floods in northern India have left a million people homeless, and a 6.2-magnitude earthquake has rocked China's southwest, smashing more than 400,000 homes.

If climate change is having an effect on the intensities of storms, it's not obvious in the historical weather data. And whatever effect it is having is much, much smaller than the effect of development along coastlines.

But the most insidious effect of building condos and industry along water is that we are systematically stripping coasts of the protection that used to cushion the blow of extreme weather. Three years after Katrina, southern Louisiana is still losing a football field's worth of wetlands every 38 minutes.

Tags: disasters, climate, weather, coastlines, india, us, south east asia, hurricanes, fema

<clipSource>http://www.time.com/time/nation/article/0,8599,1838400,00.html</clipSource>

Making a Video Statement

clipped by: Imnclady
clipper's remarks: Kowalski is a musician, he uses youtube and MySpace to post videos, hoping someone will listen to its message. I believe in community service and helping out others in need and apparently so does he. We don't have to wait for him to finish being president to see him interacting with people who make less than $500k per year.

To see him doing this stuff before he can score political points shows that this is the real him. Not a put on. The fact that he's called on to do these events shows his general respect level.

Clip Source: www.dailykos.com

Barack Obama, not only talking the talk, but WALKING THE WALK- UPDATE: McCain jokes about Katrina

Sen. Obama gathered the pool outside after services at St. Luke's Lutheran Church. He told us that his camapaign plans to mobilize its huge e-mail list of supporters to volunteer or send money once the impact of Gustav becomes apparent and authorities know better what kind of help is needed. He said his campaign is coordinating with local authorities.

"We can activate an e-mail list of a couple million people who want to give back," he said. "I think we can get tons of volunteers to travel down there if it becomes necessary."

He even rolled up his sleeves and went to work in the part of Illinois that bordered Iowa to fill sandbags:

Most of it has been a waste of money

World Bank and many foreign governments continue to provide large government-to-government loans

which are rarely used in cost-effective ways but often are stolen by the recipient countries' corrupt rulers

which saddle the citizens of those poor countries with massive debts they repay to the lenders

many

recipients of U.S. development aid are poorer now than they were before receiving assistance

<clipSource>http://www.cato.org/pub_display.php?pub_id=3238</clipSource>

FEMA helps with flooded Iowa gov't buildings

clipped by: masbury
clipper's remarks: Don't tell me we don't need federal government - how would we ever rebuild our city halls and police and fire stations on our own?

Clip Source: sage

To date, FEMA has provided $124 million to individuals who suffered flood damage. The FEMA money to public entities is "the beginning of federal funding that will assist in the rebuilding process in Cedar Rapids, Linn County and the rest of Iowa,"

city halls, fire stations and senior centers are damaged, and many have dangerous conditions for public health and safety. Today's funding announcement will go a long way toward helping our state put the pieces back together one building at a time.

Tags: government

<clipSource>chrome://sage/content/feedsummary.html?uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.gazetteonline.com%2Fapps%2Fpbcs.dll%2Fsection%3Fcategory%3Drss01%26mime%3Dxml</clipSource>
