On Tuesday, Joanne Hill was sentenced to a minimum of 15 years in jail for drowning her four-year-old daughter, Naomi, in the bath. Hill was embarrassed by her. Naomi suffered from cerebral palsy,

Hill, who had previously suffered puerperal depression, the most severe form of postnatal depression, denied murder on the grounds that she was suffering from a severe mental illness. But the jury took just 90 minutes to convict her of murder. Her husband later described her as evil.

While most parents love their disabled children unconditionally, they are also worn out by endless battles for the services they are entitled to.

It tells us something about Sarah Palin's homage to small-town America, delivered to an enthusiastic GOP convention last week, that she chose to fire it up with an unsourced quotation from the all-time champion of fake populism, the belligerent right-wing columnist Westbrook Pegler.

Leave the fantasy land of convention rhetoric, and you will find that small-town America, this legendary place of honesty and sincerity and dignity, is not doing very well.

And eventually you will ask yourself, how did this happen? Did Hollywood do this? Was it those "reporters and commentators" with their fancy college degrees who wrecked Main Street, U.S.A.?

No. For decades now we have been electing people like Sarah Palin who claimed to love and respect the folksy conservatism of small towns, and yet who have unfailingly enacted laws to aid the small town's mortal enemies.

Sub-Persons? A dependent person is a person who has less than the normal amount of intelligence, volition, or physiological independence. A guardian is a person who is responsible for the well-being of a dependent person and to that end may coerce that dependent person. Minor children are dependent persons, and their parents are usually their guardians. The other major group of dependent persons are the mentally disabled. Cetaceans and apes are not intelligent enough to be considered even dependent persons.

Super-Persons? No amount of mental or physical power makes any entity deserve more rights than persons. Bioengineered and artificial beings are fully persons if they meet the tests of intelligence and volition.

clipper's remarks: People in this country have gotten way too focused on being politically correct. It seems like everyone is on the lookout for something someone has done that could potentially be taken as insensitive of a particular individual or group.

I have a sister who is mentally retarded and am gay so the word "retard" and dealing with stereotypes is nothing new to me.

I have to say, taking offense to something like this should completely revolve around context. If I were out with my sister and someone started pointing, laughing, and calling her a retard, OBVIOUSLY I'd have a problem with it. Same as if someone came up to me and started pointing, calling me a faggot.

A satirical movie or a show like Will and Grace displaying stereotypes is nothing to get offended about. It's a movie. If you think it perpetuates stereotypes, you're also probably someone who feels movies and TV should be educating your children on life.

Prior to the premiere, I joined a large coalition of individuals and organizations to engage in discussions with DreamWorks Studios CEO Stacey Snider and others from the studio to express our concern over the film's "Simple Jack" subplot and the slogans, "Once upon a time there was a retard," and "Never go full retard."

Members of the Coalition of National Disability Organizations -- disabled advocates and family members of people with intellectual disabilities -- have seen the movie and reported shock and disgust. Their reactions have resonated with many of us who take their cause and their voice with the utmost seriousness.

While I am disappointed that we were not consulted in the same manner as other minority groups depicted in the film and that there are 17 mentions of the "R-word" with one mention of the "N-word," I am grateful to Ms. Snider for listening to the coalition and for taking steps to eliminate some of the film's most offensive marketing elements.

Aides bathed her, scrubbed the sores on her face, trimmed her torn fingernails. They had to cut her tangled hair before they could comb out the lice.

Her caseworker determined that she had never been to school, never seen a doctor. She didn't know how to hold a doll, didn't understand peek-a-boo. "Due to the severe neglect," a doctor would write, "the child will be disabled for the rest of her life."

Hunched in an over sized crib, Danielle curled in on herself like a potato bug, then writhed angrily, kicking and thrashing. To calm herself, she batted at her toes and sucked her fists. "Like an infant," one doctor wrote.

clipper's remarks: The evidence is overwhelming. Carrying on from the woeful Labour regime, this soporific administration has done nothing for the disabled. When the National Servicemen told the Council that the organisation for their disabled members was inadequate, they were attacked.
Try getting an 18 stone former regular soldier onto a bur with his wheel chair. As often as not you cannot, because their is a pram already on the bus. The Disabilities Act requires the Transport Authorities to make available disabled spaces. Only Stagecoach in this area enforces the Law and requires young adults to fold away their carriages and sit their children on their laps. I would love to be able to do this with the 18 stone gentleman, but I cannot.
All the disabled ask for is their RIGHTS underwritten in Law. Unfortunately, it is not the young parent who is the pariah, but it is usually the elderly who have no conception of what it is like to be imprisoned in a wheel-chair, the problems that carers have

Blackpool Council 'chucks out' disabled daughters

Dawn Ashton, 40, who suffers from cerebral palsy, and Joanne Smith, 38, who has been diagnosed with spina bifida, spend two to three days a week at the facility on Whitegate Drive.

For around 20 years, Dawn and Joanne have enjoyed going to the day centre for lunch and to take part in craft and pottery sessions – giving their mothers a much needed break.

And it's not cultural, couples take HUGE risks while pregnant with drugs and just smoking cigarettes. So please, think about it!

For example, in large parts of rural China, most families are allowed a second-child, especially if the first was a girl. Local officials often have wide discretion on enforcement, a fact that has made the policy susceptible to corruption.

Many Chinese have shown interest in adopting earthquake orphans, and Monday's announcement says there are no limits on the number of earthquake orphans a family can adopt. The adoptions, or even a future birth to a family that adopts an orphan, will not face the limitations of the one-child policy.

Officials estimated last week that the quake left about 4,000 orphans, but they warned they would make every effort to connect children with other family members.

The Chengdu Population and Family Planning Committee in the capital of hard-hit Sichuan province announced that families whose child was killed, severely injured or disabled in the quake could get a certificate allowing them to have another child

It addresses the common problem of couples illegally having more than one child

If a child born illegally was killed in the quake, the parents will no longer have to pay fines for that child - but the previously paid fines won't be refunded, the committee said

TORONTO (LifeSiteNews) - Jim Caviezel, the star of the blockbuster film The Passion of the Christ, told an interviewer that he had been challenged by a friend who was not pro-life to live up to his professed pro-life convictions and adopt a disabled child.

The friend told Caviezel that if he did that, then he would change to the pro-life position. When Caviezel and his wife, Kerri, went to China to adopt not one, but eventually two orphans suffering from brain tumours, the friend reneged on the deal. Caviezel, however, said, "It didn't matter to me because the joy that we had from (Bo) - he's like our own."

The couple's first child, Bo, had been abandoned on a train, grew up in an orphanage until he was five and was diagnosed with a brain tumour. The Caviezels nursed Bo through his surgeries and he remains today at the centre of the family.

"You have no idea the blessings that you have coming" says Pro-Life Caviezel to parents considering adoption.

Police in riot gear intervened Wednesday when hundreds of people seeking a chance at subsidized housing grew frustrated after officials ran out of applications.

At least one person was arrested and at least six others were hospitalized for exhaustion during chaos at the Boca Raton Housing Authority some believed would grow into a riot.

Judith Aigen, executive director of the housing authority, said the crowd surged forward when told applications only remained for the disabled. She said mothers with children and people in wheelchairs were nearly crushed.

People began gathering at the housing authority before midnight, and before long there were far more than the 600 applications officials planned to distribute. Many of those waiting were women with infants or toddlers in their arms, or a baby on the way.

"We're all working people and we're all bitter right now," said Deborah Davis, 37. "To be turned away like this hurts. They should have anticipated having a large crowd."
