Emotion-oriented computing is a broad research area involving many disciplines

The following figure is our proposed map of the thematic areas involved in emotion-oriented computing.

The central column represents the areas where purely technological challenges loom largest

The left hand column deals with issues where application is most obviously of concern

The right hand column contains the sub-areas with the strongest roots in psychology.

The task of synthesising agents that can interact emotionally is at the center because it summarises the state of the art – it cannot be done well without satisfactory progress in all the others.

The present progressive is used for actions going on in the moment of speaking and for actions taking place only for a short period of time. It is also used to express development and actions that are arranged for the near future.

The Colorful Art of Sand Mandalas

The Sand Mandala is a Tibetan Buddhist tradition which symbolizes the transitory nature of things. As part of Buddhist canon, all things material are seen as transitory. A sand mandala is an example of this, being that once it has been built and its accompanying ceremonies and viewing are finished, it is systematically destroyed.

Historically, the mandala was not created with natural, dyed sand, but granules of crushed colored stone. In modern times, plain white stones are ground down and dyed with opaque inks to achieve the same effect. Before laying down the sand, the monks assigned to the project will draw the geometric measurements associated with the mandala.

The sand granules are then applied using small tubes, funnels, and scrapers, until the desired pattern over-top is achieved.

Sand mandalas traditionally take several weeks to build

a team of monks will work together on the project, creating one section of the diagram at a time

In December 1919, during the course of research on her Ph.D. dissertation, Margaret Mead saw this illustration in the Journal of the Polynesian Society. Later, in 1924, she resolved to do ethnological fieldwork in the remote Tuamotu islands of central Polynesia.

There’s a short documentary about Popp and Bitfall over on YouTube.

Bitfall is “a physical water sculpture with 128 synchronized magnetic valves, so that a wall of falling water drops can be perceived as a graphical bitmap matrix. A computer application selects currently popular keywords from news websites, & displays them on the transparent ‘information curtain’. the ‘information flow’ metaphor literally demonstrates the dynamic & ever-changing character of continuous information streams from which users build their associated experiences.”
