Sugary foods can cause testosterone levels to drop by as much as 25 percent, regardless of whether a man has diabetes or normal glucose tolerance. The new findings mean that men with low testosterone should have their hormone levels retested after they fast overnight, as eating may transiently lower them, say the researchers.

<FONT size="2" face="Verdana," sans-serif="" helvetica,="" arial,=""> Previous research showed that a high level of insulin, the hormone primarily secreted after eating, is related to low testosterone levels. Like eating, glucose intake causes blood glucose (sugar) levels to rise, which stimulates the secretion of insulin. In the new study, the researchers examined the impact of a standard dose of glucose on testosterone levels in 74 men.

"More research is needed to find the factor or factors responsible for this drop in testosterone,"

Tags: sugar, testosterone

<clipSource>http://www.altpenis.com/penis_news/20090515033631sys.shtml</clipSource>

Diabetes Effects: Short-Term & Long-Term

clipped by: jenadd123

Clip Source: www.diabeteseffects.org

Although there are three types of diabetes, the most common of these is type 2 diabetes (affecting as many as 95% of those who are afflicted). In type 2 diabetes, the pancreas is typically producing adequate insulin for the body’s needs but the body fails to use the insulin efficiently, a diabetes effect that is known as insulin resistance.

Tags: diabetes effects, diabetes, diabetes effect, effects of diabetes, effect of diabetes, diabetic

<clipSource>http://www.diabeteseffects.org/diabetes-effects-short-term-long-term/</clipSource>

Diabetes Effects: An Overview

clipped by: jenadd123

Clip Source: www.diabeteseffects.org

Many people have type 2 diabetes for many years without knowing it. But a lot of times these diets are too demanding for our body, or even unhealthy. But what if we tell you that there is diet, a lifestyle even, with nothing but positive effects? Welcome to southern Europe, embrace the Mediterranean way of life!

Experts, nutritionists and scientists all agree: the Mediterranean diet, the typical food of Spain and Greece, is one of the healthiest in the world. Are we ready to talk numbers? You are 30% less likely to develop depression and the risk of cancer is reduced by 22%. It protects you from diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, helps to slow Alzheimer’s, and has a positive effect on children who suffer from asthma and allergies. Scientists at Sydney's Garvan Institute of Medical Research say that fibre not only helps keep people regular, it boosts the immune system so it can better combat inflammatory diseases.

When foods high in fibre, such as dried fruit and beans, reach the gut, bacteria convert them to compounds known as short chain fatty acids. These acids are known to alleviate some inflammatory disease in the bowel.

The research, published in the latest edition of Nature, indicated that diet may have profound effects on immune responses or inflammatory diseases, he said.

Tags: health, diet

<clipSource>http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20091028/hl_afp/healthaustraliafibre</clipSource>

Treating the pain epidemic

clipped by: Lexica

Clip Source: tierneylab.blogs.nytimes.com

Chronic pain affects more than 70 million Americans, which makes it more widespread than heart disease, cancer and diabetes combined. It costs the economy more than $100 billion per year. So why don’t more doctors and researchers take it seriously?

That is the challenge raised by a new report from the Mayday Fund, a nonprofit group that studies pain treatment. The report, which been endorsed by an array of medical groups, advocates a revolution in the training of doctors, the financing of research and the education of law-enforcement officials.

“The fact is that people aren’t getting competent and cost-effective treatment for chronic pain,” said Dr. Russell Portenoy, one of the co-chairmen of the panel that prepared the report.

“Don’t assume that your doctor knows what to do to treat your pain,” Dr. Zeltzer advised patients.

She and the other members of the panel urged better pain-management training in medical schools and more money for pain research

Tags: health, healthcare, pain, chronic-pain, pain-relief

<clipSource>http://tierneylab.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/11/05/treating-the-pain-epidemic/?hpw</clipSource>

Capitalism again proves to the the source of the problem

clipped by: darkeforce
clipper's remarks: This article is a must-read. The unfair capitalist healthcare system causes a glut on doctors in rich areas where they can earn more, and a sparsity in areas where they would earn less, like poor communities. Do people still think that America can get by without reforming Healthcare? Doctor's salaries need to be standardized, so a doctor working in a dirt-poor area of Arkansas is going make the same amount (by scale of skill) as a doctor in Malibu, California. 50 million uninsured Americans, and another 50 million underinsured Americans are too many people to be excluded from proper, complete healthcare. It's criminal, and amoral.

C'mon, all you right-wingers! Don't you think that women and newborn children dying from perfectly preventable causes during childbirth is more important that wondering if federal money is going to perform abortions? Don't you think that people ending up losing limbs or eyesight due to lack of care for their diabetes is more important than getting all work

Clip Source: www.reuters.com

SPECIAL REPORT: Are doctors what ails U.S. healthcare?

WHITE PLAINS, New York (Reuters) - Nowhere in the United States has more doctors at its beck and call than White Plains, one of the wealthiest cities in the nation.

Doctors have been flocking to the area and surrounding Westchester County since the 1970s, drawn in part by an upper-class clientele who demand top-notch medical care and have the means to pay for it. The county has one of the highest median household incomes in the nation (about $77,000 a year in 2007), and the figures soar above six digits in suburbs like Scarsdale and Chappaqua, which former President Bill Clinton calls home.

Nearly 3,000 miles away, scaring up a doctor in Bakersfield, situated in California's economically battered Central Valley, is a lot harder. In fact, White Plains has more than twice the number of doctors per capita as Bakersfield, where needy patients until recently had to take a 2-hour bus trip to Fresno to see a diabetes treatment specialist.

<clipSource>http://www.reuters.com/article/topNews/idUSTRE5A50EB20091106?feedType=RSS&feedName=topNews&rpc=76</clipSource>

Missouri Obesity Rates & Diabetes

clipped by: SHarvatin

Clip Source: diabetes.webmd.com

The 10 states whose obesity rates have remained unchanged or decreased since
