We are suffering a preemptive video arrest. For those that don't know, I-Witness Video was remarkably successful in exposing police misconduct and outright perjury by police during the 2004 RNC. Out of 1800 arrests, at least 400 were overturned based solely on video evidence which contradicted sworn statements which were fabricated by police officers. It seems that the house arrest we are now under and the possible threat of the seizure of our computers and video cameras is a result of the 2004 success.

We are asking the public to contact the office of St. Paul Mayor Chris Coleman at 651-266-8510 to stop this house arrest, this gross intimidation by police officers, and the detention of media activists and reporters.

A fresh upsurge of dissident republican violence in Northern Ireland was orchestrated by a new nucleus of ex-IRA members who have defected from the Provisionals. Veterans of the Provisional IRA's North Armagh brigade were behind the 24-hour wave of shootings, blast bomb attacks and riots that rocked the Craigavon area at the beginning of last week.

The violence in Craigavon means that in almost every corner of Northern Ireland there have been short outbursts of dissident terrorist activity over the last six months. In August, dissidents linked to a Continuity IRA unit in Co Fermanagh fired an improvised rocket at a mobile patrol.

Police patrols came under fire from a sniper, two blast bombs were thrown, police vehicles were attacked with petrol bombs and stones, and an SDLP assembly member was assaulted during 24 hours of disturbances in the Tullygally and Drumbeg areas of Armagh town.

The New York Times is reporting President Bush is seeking Congress to explicitly acknowledge that the nation remains engaged in an armed conflict with al-Qaeda, the Taliban and associated organizations. The measure carries significant legal and public policy implications for Bush, and potentially his successor. It would allow them to claim the approval of Congress to use the tools of war, including detention, interrogation and surveillance, against the enemy. Some lawmakers are concerned that the administration’s effort to declare anew a war footing is an eleventh-hour maneuver to reestablish its broad interpretation of the president’s wartime powers, even in the face of challenges from the Supreme Court and Congress. It is uncertain whether Congress will take the administration up on its request.

While being detained, Powderly snapped this shot of a dozing interrogator.

They told some of my collaborators they were gonna shoot us. They really didn't know what we were doing or who we were...At about the 26th hour, they gave up. So they filed us all in vans...and started driving us way on the outskirts of town... Before long we see this ominous spectre of a giant building surrounded by barbed wire. That was Chongwen detention center.

They stripped us and took photos of us naked. They put us in little red shorts and red shirts, prison clothes, and marched us into general population prison cells...At that point we were in a position no or very few Americans had been before.

Former Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic appeared before judges at the Yugoslav war crimes Tribunal and refused to plead to the 11 charges against him, just as he had four weeks ago in his first appearance at the Hague court.

Prosecutors said Marc Harold Ramsey, 39, sent a letter to McCain's office in the south Denver suburb of Centennial reading, "If you are reading this, then you are already dead!"

The letter was signed Akeem Ramsey El, but the return address on the envelope had Ramsey's name and "Arapahoe County Detention Facility."

Ramsey, 39, is in the Arapahoe County jail awaiting trial on a charges of menacing, harassment and assaulting a peace officer.

U.S. Attorney Troy Eid said Ramsey told investigators he wrote the letter to express his views about the U.S. government.

"A death threat by no means is a legitimate form of political expression," Eid said.

Afghanistan's cabinet has demanded a change in the rules governing international troops in the country, after more than 90 civilians were killed in US-led air attacks last week.

the UN's special representative in Afghanistan, said: "Investigations by UNAMA found convincing evidence, based on the testimony of eyewitnesses and others, that some 90 civilians were killed, including 60 children, 15 women and 15 men."

Based on UN investigations, it is the highest civilian death toll from international military action since US-led forces invaded in 2001 to remove the Taliban government.

Teen Goes On Rampage Over Change In Computer Privileges, Police Say

A 15-year-old was taken into custody after police said he chased his mother with a knife and beat his brother with a sugar cane over a change in computer privileges.

The teen was charged with aggravated assault and battery after police were called to a home on the 200 block of Silver Oak Road to investigate a disturbance, Local 6 News partner Florida Today reported. The teen was arrested Sunday and taken to the Juvenile Detention Center in Sharpes.

Police said the boy was on the home computer when he grew angry over changes to the system. Police said the teen then threw several objects and picked up a knife and a stick of sugar cane.

The older brother and mother told police the teen pushed his mother several times while clutching the knife. He also struck the brother with the sugar cane, police said.

The teen told police he felt threatened by his mother and sibling.

He was arrested by police and taken into custody.

China Detains Catholic Bishop

Security agents detained an elderly bishop of an underground Catholic church in northern China hours before the closing of the Olympic Games, a U.S.-based group said Monday.

Bishop Julius Jia Zhiguo, 73, of Zhengding, a city in northern Hebei province, was taken by six government officials from his cathedral on Sunday morning, the Cardinal Kung Foundation said in a statement.

"We will not easily arrest people if they don't break any law," Zhang said.

The foundation said Jia has been detained a dozen times since January 2004. The most recent detention was in August last year.

China faces routine criticism for human rights violations and repression of religious freedom. Religious practice is heavily regulated by the Communist Party, with worship allowed only in party-controlled churches, temples and mosques, while those gathering outside risk harassment, arrest and terms in labor camps or prison.

BEIJING (AFP) — The United States called on China Thursday to allow peaceful protests, after Beijing police detained six foreigners amid a wave of demonstrations by pro-Tibet activists during the Olympics.

The US statement came shortly after Beijing police said it had handed out 10-day detention terms to six foreigners believed by an overseas activist group to be pro-Tibet campaigners involved in Olympic protests this week.

But Students For a Free Tibet said it assumed the six were American pro-Tibet activists who police detained in Beijing on Tuesday.

Among the six detained on Tuesday was James Powderly, an American artist who planned to project a giant laser beam onto a Beijing building with a message in support of a free Tibet.

Marion Superior Court officials have begun a nationwide search for a new superintendent at the juvenile lockup for the third time in two years.

Richard L. Curry Jr., brought in last year to fix a facility troubled by security, safety and other problems, has resigned to return to the state prison system.

Curry, a U.S. Army veteran and Baptist pastor, began his career as a correctional officer. He was assistant superintendent of the Putnamville Correctional Facility when he was appointed to oversee the county detention center. Curry's salary was $80,000.

His hiring followed the aborted appointment in September 2006 of Troy Hoppes. Court officials rescinded the decision after learning Hoppes' master's degree came from an online diploma mill.
