Joanne Massey, 35, lives in a recreation of a 1950s home in Stafford with her husband Kevin, 42, who works as a graphics application designer. Joanne is a housewife. She says:

I love nothing better than fastening my pinny round my waist and baking a cake for Kevin in my 1950s kitchen.

I only ever wear 1950s clothing, such as tight pencil skirts, a white blouse and a wide belt.

Debbie Cleulow, 34, lives in Upper Tean in Staffordshire with her husband Martin, 38, who works for a JCB contractor. Debbie says:

I've made my home a shrine to the Forties, and I only ever wear clothes from that decade. Other people may laugh at me, but I really don't care.

I do all the cleaning, ironing, washing and cooking, and Martin puts up shelves and looks after the car. He's the breadwinner and I create a lovely - and loving - environment for him.

Diane Rowlands, 38, works parttime in a customer service centre. She lives with Martin, who is 40 and works in a warehouse. Diane says:

Trashing Batteries for Brighter Sidewalks

We all know alkaline batteries are really bad for the environment if you don’t dispose of them properly. The right thing to do is send them to special recycling centers but hundreds of tons end up in landfills where their toxic innards seep into the earth. Perhaps a good solution is the Energy Seed, an LED lamp post powered by trashed alkaline batteries.

The idea is to encourage people to throw their batteries away into the Energy Seed. There’s a slot for nearly every size battery. The unit combines any left over juice from all the batteries to power a super efficient LED ring.

Twenty Designers Featured During V.I. Fashion Week, October 9-13

Sept. 4, 2008 - Organizers will present the 2nd Annual Virgin Islands Fashion Week from Oct. 9 –13, at the Wyndham Sugar Bay Resort and Spa. The five-day, multi-cultural event will feature 20 new and established designers from across the Caribbean, the United States and Africa, who will present their latest collections ranging from street chic to couture at the signature Caribbean Catwalk Runway Show to be held.
The event will feature former "Project Runway" contestant and film producer Zulema Griffin alongside Guyanese-born, international designer Roger Gary and Bianca Golden, a former contestant on "America's Next Top Model." Other designers will come from St. Maarten, St. Kitts, Trinidad, Barbados, Dominica, Guyana and Nigeria.
The week of activities will include a unique upscale fashion show, fashion expo, press conference and chic after-parties for the fashion savvy Virgin Islanders.

That battery you're throwing away may not have enough energy left to power your gadgetry, but it does have enough juice to light up a low-energy LED. That's the driving idea behind South Korean designer Sung Woo Park's conceptual Energy Seed, a stylish street lamp powered entirely by discarded batteries.

Drop a battery into one of the Energy Seed's disposal holes and it'll fall down into a tube. Several batteries can be stacked one on top of the other, daisy-chaining drained batteries into a long-lasting power supply for an LED lamp that will give pedestrians a bit of light on the sidewalk. It's a great way to re-appropriate trash that we'd otherwise consider useless.

Cindy Sheehan, the "Peace Mom," now a candidate

Cindy Sheehan, demure in a black pleated skirt, rose-colored blouse and loafers, broke a mile-wide smile as she took the microphone. She knew the haters had stayed home.

She could stand on this stage as the long-shot independent candidate for the 8th Congressional district in San Francisco, running against the Speaker of the House, without hecklers shouting "Traitor!" and "Commie!" She could even joke about her enemies.

Introducing the rally's headliner, presidential candidate Ralph Nader, she said: "You know, it's not easy having most of the country hate you. I know ..."

Running against Pelosi, who has won her last 10 elections with about 80 percent of the vote, is widely considered a fool's errand. Republicans field an unknown this year, an interior designer. But Congress is even less popular than the president these days. Sheehan is banking on disappointment with Pelosi's leadership to send some disaffected voters her way.
