Yet the reason for keeping kids away from psychiatric medication persists however absurd it might be.

And the reasons are absurd. If a teenager had a malfunctioning liver, only religious weirdos would say to keep the child off the medication. But when a child's brain malfunctions and there is is a medication that can help, many people cry foul and become suspicious. Why? We are only talking about organs of the body. Just as yellowing skin can be a symptom of a malfunctioning liver, so depression can be a symptom of a malfunctioning brain. The meds can save lives.

Clip Source: www.upi.com

A spike in U.S. teen suicides in 2004 -- sharpest increase in the past 15 years -- appears to have persisted into 2005, researchers said.

Jeff Bridge of Nationwide Children's Hospital in Columbus said researchers have identified what may be an emerging crisis, but the next step is to figure out why. One answer may lie in the prescription of antidepressant medication. Because of concerns over side effects, the number of teens prescribed antidepressants has dropped by as much as 20 percent.

"The vast majority of young people who complete suicide have some sort of psychiatric disorder. Most commonly depression or some mood disorder," Dr. John Campo also of Nationwide Children's Hospital said. "Kids who need the medicine most may not be getting it."

<clipSource>http://www.upi.com/Health_News/2008/09/03/Study_US_teen_suicide_spike_continues/UPI-76651220460050/</clipSource>

Study: Zen Meditation Really Does Clear the Mind

clipped by: tabsey
clipper's remarks: Zen meditation discourages mental withdrawal from the world and dreaminess, and instead asks one to keep fully aware with a vigilant attitude. Typically one focuses on breathing and posture and aims to dismiss thoughts as they arise. Brain scans now show that Zen training leads to different activity in a set of brain regions known as the "default network," which is linked with spontaneous bursts of thought and wandering minds.

Clip Source: www.livescience.com

The seemingly nonsensical Zen practice of "thinking about not
thinking" could help free the mind of distractions, new brain scans
reveal.

This suggests Zen meditation could help treat attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (so-called ADD or ADHD), obsessive-compulsive disorder, anxiety disorder, major depression and other disorders marked by distracting thoughts.

In the last decade, there has been a resurgence of scientific
research into meditation, due in part to the wide availability and
increasing sophistication of brain-scanning techniques. For instance,
scientists recently found that months of intense training in meditation
can sharpen a person's brain enough to help them notice details they
might otherwise miss.

Orthorexia Nervosa is known as the health food disorder. This is due to the Orthorexic's preoccupation with health food. Orthorexia causes the sufferer to become more and more obsessed with the types of foods they are consuming, resulting in more and more constriction placed on their eating habits. Most people suffering from Orthorexia never succumb to death, yet suffer social isolation and depression. "The risk of breaking the diet was just too much to hang out with others," recalls one former sufferer.

Well, give me a tough Alaskan governor who has taken on the political establishment in the largest state in the union -- and won -- over the beltway business-as-usual crowd any day of the week.

Let's be clear ... the selection of Gov. No, the American public is not whining...More likely, though, Americans are just leaving the whining to pundits and trend reporters. Our problem is not whining. It is persuading young people that, with baby boomers retiring, entitlement programs bulging and the world economy growing ever more competitive, now's the time to roll up the sleeves for something other than tattoos.
For example, India produces 2.5 million college graduates every year (with concentrations in high demand fields - electronics, programming, engineering, accounting, etc.), and approximately 90,000 MBA's. Nothing against tattoos, but I do feel ignorance and apathy are much too prominent in America. Awareness of ignorance is the first step to wisdom.

Clip Source: online.wsj.com

Never mind that GDP is puttering along in positive terrain. Non-addicted adult social drinkers can spend $600 per month on alcohol. An alcohol addict can spend $2,800 per month, depending on the amount consumed. For an alcoholic, a night at the bar can be financially devastating, with staggering subtotals. When calculating the cost of alcohol, legal expenses related to citations and criminal offenses, lost productivity at work, and a shorter lifespan, one study (http://www.spiritualriver.com/for-alcoholics-quitting-drinking-will-net-you-over-one-million-dollars/) concluded that the actual cost of alcohol addiction amounts to $37,300/year for each individual. Most of the time, crimes are committed by a person who is under the influence of drugs or alcohol, with consequences ranging from jail time to hefty fees. A person convicted of driving under the influence will spend on average $5,540 on their DUI/DWI fees.

Tags: alcohol

<clipSource>http://www.vistabay.com/blog/?p=19</clipSource>

addicted cocaine

clipped by: branzamica
clipper's remarks: Also classified as an opioid, Demerol is prescribed for the relief of moderate to severe pain. In the midst of an addiction, it is easy to ignore the long-term financial impact and justify the satisfaction of the psychological and physical urges. It is hard to see the big picture sometimes on our own, and depending upon the level and type of addiction, apathy and pride can cause us to ignore consequences. The study reported that doctors racked up 118 million prescriptions for antidepressants in 2005 (out of a total of 2.4 billion prescriptions) [source: Cohen].

What does this remarkable surge in antidepressant popularity say about how our society now views depression?

<clipSource>http://health.howstuffworks.com/antidepressant-most-prescribed.htm</clipSource>

Religion and the 12 steps

clipped by: jimmy123

Clip Source: www.12step.com

Step 11 is not the personal property of the 12 Steps, rather it is implementing something that humanity has always done, Prayer. This action, done in any language as long as it is with the proper motivation and intent can yield amazing results. Prayer is humanity's medium in communication to the divine and ultimately the addict who wants to free himself or herself from the shackles of addiction has no better tool than the power of prayer.

Just as prayer offers connection to the infinite, it is this infinite higher source, which ultimately lifts the addict and truthfully all else out of the darkness of addiction and depression.

Step 11 continues that spiritual bent by adding two important tools: prayer and meditation. The recovering addict is to use them to "tap into the daily direction of our Higher Power, however we choose to define that term. Through prayer and meditation we are simply asking and listening -- asking for that Power's guidance and listening for a response."

<clipSource>http://www.12step.com/12steps/step11.html</clipSource>
