A Buckley endorses Obama

(CNN) — No, hell has not frozen over, but a Buckley is backing a Democrat for president.

Buckley, who praised McCain in a New York Times Op-Ed earlier this year and defended the Arizona senator's conservative credentials against wary talk-radio hosts, said McCain is no longer the “real” and “unconventional” man he once admired.

"This campaign has changed John McCain," Buckley wrote. "It has made him inauthentic. A once-first class temperament has become irascible and snarly; his positions change, and lack coherence; he makes unrealistic promises, such as balancing the federal budget 'by the end of my first term.' Who, really, believes that?

"Then there was the self-dramatizing and feckless suspension of his campaign over the financial crisis," Buckley added. "His ninth-inning attack ads are mean-spirited and pointless. And finally, not to belabor it, there was the Palin nomination. What on earth can he have been thinking?"

The World Conservation Monitoring Centre, an agency of the United Nations Environment Programme, has identified 17 megadiverse countries,^[1] most located in the tropics.

In 2002, a separate organization, Like-Minded Megadiverse Countries, was formed consisting of countries rich in biological diversity and associated traditional knowledge.^[2] This organization does not include all the megadiverse countries as identified by the World Conservation Monitoring Centre.

Ballot blunder: Barack 'Osama' on absentee ballots

Talk about a mix-up -- in Rensselaer County hundreds of absentee ballots mailed out this week to voters have Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama's last name spelled "Osama".

Election officials on both sides of the aisle say the misspelling was simply a typo.

The absentee ballots were mailed out to about three hundred people.

Rare is the catastrophe that does not offer some promise. The key is having the genius to discover hope within the rubble.

An argument can be made that the current financial disaster offers a future president, Obama in this case, the chance to transform the U.S. economy. A weakened Wall Street and a chastened conservative community are not now in a position to resist thoughtful and sober re-regulation of markets. The Reagan era (actually Nixon-Reagan-Bush) is over and with it the arrogance that laissez faire always presumes.

The Wall Street disaster is a metaphor for excess and greed, but also for a time gone by. The world of the new century requires not just a new Democratic administration, but one that is prepared to transform our nation and help transform the world.

Earlier this week, the Associated Press disseminated an “analysis” accusing Palin of injecting a “racial tinge” into the campaign because she criticized Obama for his longtime relationship with Weather Underground terrorist Bill Ayers.

Those are very appropriate words.

Over the last week, here at Clipmarks, other forums, on radio, TV, in the newspapers and magazines there is a shocking virulent outburst of hate against Obama, trying to associate him with "domestic terrorism," and being a supporter of 'Islamofacsist," (the neocon propagada term the Republicans wave like a red flag).

In this age of 24-hour media coverage there is the real possibility of such vocal and visible fascist-like hatred and attempts to distort elections and destroy opponents can succeed.

It was done in the 2000 elections in the USA, which Al Gore won and Bush stole in Florida, with the help of a shouting mob.

We have to not only stand strong against this, but fight back, word for word -- & Vote Obama,

NEWBERG, Ore. — Officials of a small Christian university say a life-size cardboard reproduction of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama was hung from a tree on the campus, an act with racial undertones that outraged students and school leaders alike.

George Fox University President Robin Baker said a custodian discovered the effigy early Tuesday and removed it. University spokesman Rob Felton said Wednesday that the commercially produced reproduction had been suspended from the branch of a tree with fishing line around the neck.

The message read, ‘‘Act Six reject.’’

Obama is widely considered to be ahead in Oregon. In the run-up to the state’s May primary, he drew a crowd of about 75,000 people in Portland.

Connor Kincaid and his cousin and roommate, Blake Kincaid, said they were barred from registering for spring classes after refusing Wednesday to take down their signs supporting Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama.

"Effective immediately, I am suspending the prohibition on signs in individual students' residence hall room windows and any sanctions related to its enforcement," UT President Bill Powers said in a written statement.

Powers said he had formed a committee to study the policy and make recommendations. In the meantime, he said, school policy now "expressly allows the display of signs and posters in students' residence hall room windows."

The crackdown sparked an outcry among students, and university Democrats and Republicans worked together to fight rules they said were unconstitutional. They had encouraged students across campus to put signs in their dorm windows as a form of protest.

Major Shift in Faith Voters toward Obama, Survey Finds

Not only is Sen. Barack Obama ahead in general national polls, but a new survey finds that the Democratic presidential candidate has made significant inroads among faith voters.

In comparison to the 2004 Democratic nominee Sen. John Kerry, Obama has made significant gains among monthly worship attenders. Among this group of voters, who attend religious services once or twice a month, 60 percent support Obama in 2008 compared to 49 percent for Kerry in 2004, according to results from the report, “The Faith and American Politics Survey,” sponsored by Faith in Public Life and conducted by Public Religion Research.

Also unlike the 2004 election, more Americans think the Democratic candidate is friendly to religion than the Republican nominee. Forty-nine percent of Americans say Obama is friendly to religion, while 45 percent say the same of McCain.

The poll also found that 71 percent of Americans say it is important for public officials to be comfortable talking about religious values.

Republican nominee John McCain criticized Democratic nominee Barack Obama in Tuesday night's debate for supporting an unsuccessful $3 million federal funding request to help pay for a new projection system at the Chicago planetarium. In McCain's view, the "overhead projector" was an example of Obama's approach to pork-barrel spending.

Adler President Paul Knappenberger defended the request. The museum wants to spend $10 million to update its original, 78-year-old domed Sky Theater auditorium, including replacement of the huge, 40-year-old Zeiss planetarium projection system, which is falling into disrepair with no replacement parts available

More than 30 million people have seen the Zeiss sky shows at the Adler, at least a third of them schoolchildren, Knappenberger said. He noted that planetariums in New York and Los Angeles received federal funding in recent years to replace aging Zeiss systems.
