On Thursday at 11:50 a.m. Pacific Daylight Time, GeoEye chief executive Matthew O'Connell plans to be at Vandenberg Air Force Base, watching a Boeing Delta II rocket roar into the California sky, carrying GeoEye's new imaging satellite -- and the hopes of his company's future. If all goes well, he'll hand out cigars.

From its orbiting height of 425 miles, GeoEye-1 will have fine enough resolution to pick out home plate at Nationals Stadium. It will sell photographs to its biggest customer, the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, and commercial customers including Google Maps.

The Dulles company has a lot riding on Thursday's mission. It has postponed the launch twice. And earlier this summer, the company announced it would restate accounting from 2005 to 2007.

Few issues within specialized marketplaces can be solved through the purchase of a single product; vertical positioning is the most powerful when a complete industry-specific solution is offered. Few organizations have an existing product that by itself solves a sub-vertical need, unless it was developed specifically for that purpose. PHNOM PENH (Reuters) - The price of rat meat has quadrupled in Cambodia this year as inflation has put other meat beyond the reach of poor people, officials said on Wednesday.

With consumer price inflation at 37 percent according to the latest central bank estimate, demand has pushed a kilogram of rat meat up to around 5,000 riel ($1.28) from 1,200 riel last year.

($1 = 3,900 riel)

Spicy field rat dishes with garlic thrown in have become particularly popular at a time when beef costs 20,000 riel a kg.

Officials said rats were fleeing to higher ground from flooded areas of the lower Mekong Delta, making it easier for villagers to catch them.

"Not only are our poor eating it, but there is also demand from Vietnamese living on the border with us."

He estimated that Cambodia supplied more than a tonne of live rats a day to Vietnam.

In the latest in the seemingly never-ending series of announcements by airlines on the new fees they are levying on customers, Delta said yesterday that it will now charge people $50 each way to check a second bag on domestic flights, double the current $25

Starting Aug. 1, US Airways will even start charging passengers $2 for a Coke or a bottle of water

What does strike me in relation to the constant stream of new fees by the airlines is the increasingly negative reaction of people who fly regularly. Rather than becoming inured to all the extra fees, passengers are becoming more and more incensed. Just take a look at a sample of comments posted by readers of the Consumerist blog in reaction to the latest Delta announcement:

In all seriousness, what can airline passengers do in reaction to all the fees? Are there any avenues left, short of not flying?

clipper's remarks: I haven't read much about travel to Nigeria, save George Packer's great article in the New Yorker (see here: http://www.newyorker.com/archive/2006/11/13/061113fa_fact_packer)
about the city's informal economies. A New York Times reporter recently surveyed the city's nightlife, malls and substandard housing and found a huge gap between the wealthy and poor. I think it will be awhile before it becomes a real destination, but it should be interesting to see how travel there increases in the coming years.

But because of the rising price of oil, the declining United States dollar, the relocation of foreign workers from the oil-rich but kidnapping-prone Niger Delta, large privatization efforts and a mad dash for the city’s remaining plots of land, Lagos is more flush with cash and full of glitter than ever.

A recent study of the most expensive cities for expatriates by the consulting firm Mercer found that Lagos ranked 30th, making it only slightly less costly than New York but considerably more expensive than Los Angeles, Miami and Washington.

Dinner for two at an average restaurant costs more than $200. A cocktail costs more than $15. A box of cereal costs $12 at a supermarket. Hotel rooms under $400 are difficult to find.

Because of widespread corruption, the vast amounts of money coming in rarely trickle down in Nigeria.
