High court turns away Navy chaplains' appeal

The Supreme Court has refused to get in the middle of a fight between the Navy and some of its chaplains over complaints that only Catholic chaplains were allowed to stay in the service long enough to get retirement pensions.

The high court today refused to hear an appeal from non-liturgical Protestant chaplains who say they were discriminated against by the Navy. They argued that the Navy exclusively appointed overage Catholic chaplains and allowed them to stay on active duty beyond mandated retirement ages so they could get retirement pensions.

The chaplains argued that their exposure to the Navy's "denominational preference" should give them standing to sue for discrimination.

A divided U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia ruled that the complaining chaplains don't have standing to sue, and the high court refused to re-examine that decision.

The case is Chaplaincy of Full Gospel Church v. Navy, 08-1057.

Obama: More Political Capital Than Reagan?

Whether Obama's approval ratings qualify as ordinary or extraordinary depend on the point of comparison. It is not particularly surprising that Obama's approval significantly exceeds that of Bill Clinton, who won a three-way election with only about 43 percent of the popular vote, or George W. Bush, who won in the most controversial fashion imaginable after the Bush v. Gore decision.

In comparison with Ronald Reagan, however, Obama's approval is quite a bit more impressive. Indeed, it is hard to mount a credible argument that Reagan began his term with more political capital than Obama:

The election behind us, Trinity Church in Chicago welcomed Jeremiah Wright back to the pulpit. The church banned reporters from the service, but somehow the Prince of Darkness managed to get a video clip. Here's the best part (from the automatically generated transcript, which hilariously captures Wright's cadence):

"Today. Is December 7. The day that this government killed. Over 80000. Japanese civilians. At Hiroshima in 1941. Two days before giving an additional. 64000. Japanese civilians. At Nagasaki by dropping nuclear bombs on innocent. People."

Huh?!? Conservatives were up in arms over the "God damn America" sermon, but I have a bigger question. Why did Barack Obama spend twenty years listening to a man whose command of history is such that he thinks that December 7 commemorates the day the United States bombed Hiroshima?

Better in the Senate

It seems that Clinton at the State Department is close to a done deal. But I think we should consider that during her time on the national stage Sen. Clinton has been at the helm in two big undertakings -- had two big executive leadership tasks. One was health care in 1994 and the other was her presidential bid in 2007-08. Each was something of a trainwreck from an executive-level management perspective. And the State Department is a notoriously intractable bureaucracy. I still need some help understanding this decision.

What a Community Organizer Does

In her acceptance speech, Ms. Palin said, "I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a community organizer, except that you have actual responsibilities." Community organizing is at the heart of Catholic Social Teaching to end poverty and promote social justice.

So here is what Giuliani and Palin didn't know: Obama was working for a group of churches that were concerned about their parishioners, many of whom had been laid off when the steel mills closed on the south side of Chicago. They hired Obama to help those stunned people recover and get the services they needed--job training, help with housing and so forth--from the local government. It was, dare I say it, the Lord's work--the sort of mission Jesus preached (as opposed to the war in Iraq, which Palin described as a "task from God.")

They were making fun of a young man's decision "to serve a cause greater than himself," in the words of John McCain.

With consumers having more choices about which broadband provider to go with, Comcast and others simply can’t afford to tighten their usage caps too much – or to keep them at the current levels for long.

Comcast has posted a change to its broadband user policy today. It’s now limiting subscribers to 250 Gigabytes of monthly usage, which can include e-mailing friends or uploading photos.

Near term, the limit may not do much to curtain the average consumer’s Web usage. After all, 250 Gigabytes is a lot: You could download 100 HD movies over the Web, and still have some of that capacity left. Chances are, 99% of consumers will not even notice the change — for now.

But the decision carries weighty implications for the future. As Sanford C. Bernstein analyst Craig Moffett pointed out in his Aug. 29 note, “While the usage level specified is high, it is now finite…. A line has been crossed.” This is the end of unlimited broadband use as we know it. The end of an era.

Chances are, other broadband service providers will follow suit and institute similar — or even lower — limits. In Texas, Time Warner Cable is already trialing usage-based, or tiered broadband pricing.

Nearly two-thirds (64%) of business technology purchasers agree that being perceived as “green” helps their brand image, and the same percentage of affluent consumers (64%) say environmental considerations are a primary concern in their purchasing process, according to the Green TECHpulse ‘08 survey from Hansa|GCR .

Female decision-makers are more environmentally conscious than males, placing higher levels of importance on a broader range of green indicators in corporate behavior:

Slightly more than half of the companies (54%) surveyed are already buying greener IT products or services.

Most companies (88%) that have purchased green in the past 18 months say they have experienced cost-saving benefits from reduced energy usage.
