Life After Death: The Message of Evolution

Is there life after death? One way to answer this question is to examine whether nature reveals some kind of a plan for life.

Consider this passage from physicist Freeman Dyson’s A Many-Colored Glass, “Before the intricate ordered patterns of life, with trees and butterflies and birds and humans, grew to cover our planet, the earth’s surface was a boring unstructured landscape of rock and sand. And before the grand ordered structure of galaxies and stars existed, the universe was a rather uniform and disordered collection of atoms. What we see…is the universe growing visibly more ordered and more lively as it grows older.” So according to Freeman the universe has developed from a few simple things to many complex things.

The time will come when our bodies will irretrievably break down, but it is possible, indeed suggested within the script of nature, that a part of us might outlast these mortal coils.

Death threats force removal of atheist billboard

"Don't believe in God? You're not alone." was the message on a billboard put up by the Cincinnati Coalition of Reason (Cin CoR) on Reading Road at 12th Street, one block south of Liberty Street in Cincinnati. It went up on Tuesday but by Wednesday afternoon the group was told it would have to come down again. Lamar Advertising, the company that owns the billboard, leases the land on which it stands and the landowner wanted it taken down. He (or she) had been receiving death threats. Fred Edwords, national director of the United Coalition of Reason, said, "We weren't given the landowner's name or precise details, Nor did we pursue them. It was sufficient to learn that this person had received multiple, significant threats and that Lamar would act quickly to alleviate the problem. Nothing like this has ever happened to us before."

What Patti Cannady, (Anne's mother) witnessed when she found her daughter close to death that morning is unspeakable.

RIP Anne Pressly, I pray her family and friends are able to find some solace in his sentence, be it death (well earned) or life in prison. Thank God it can be nothing else.

After two male friends of Anne Pressly testified about their loss, the prosecution called Pressly's mother, Patti Cannady (pictured after leaving the courtroom following this testimony) to the stand. Cannady was already crying by the time she got into the courtroom, and cried almost constantly throughout her testimony. After saying that part of her died when her only daughter was killed, Cannady said: "All I'm trying to do is to stay strong enough that I can get to the other side of the cross and see her in heaven."

Cannady related to the jury how she often found her husband Guy laying on the floor unable to get up in the days after Pressly's death, and said that sometimes she still thinks to telephone her daughter or cover her on cold nights before realizing that she is dead. After her only child was killed, Cannady said, she destroyed most of her own childhood photographs because she knows she'll never have anyone to pass them on to.

Family stunned after M61 death

TRAGEDY: Ian Wilkinson

This is the Wigan man who died in an horrific accident after his car broke down on the motorway.

It is thought Ian Wilkinson, 39, from Hindley, was attempting to cross the southbound carriageway of the M61 early on Sunday morning when he was struck by a heavy goods vehicle.

Lancashire police have confirmed his car had broken down and was found on the hard shoulder further down the motorway.

It said: "Ian was a fantastic and loving father. He was loved by his mother Olive, father Lawrence, brothers Stephen, Adrian and David and partner Nicola. This was such an unexpected tragedy that has left all that knew him stunned.

"Ian served the public working for the NHS and will be sorely missed by his family and many close friends."

Sniper who terrorised Washington area is executed

The 48-year-old Muhammad was put to death by lethal injection at the Greensville Correctional Centre in Jarratt, Virginia, said Virginia Department of Corrections spokesperson Larry Traylor.

"Death was pronounced at 9.11pm (1.11am GMT) There were no complications. Mr. Muhammad was asked if he wished to make a last statement. He did not acknowledge us or make any statement whatsoever," Traylor told reporters.

The Washington Post reported today that Hasan presented this PowerPoint presentation at Walter Reed hospital in 2007, saying: “It's getting harder and harder for Muslims in the service to morally justify being in a military that seems constantly engaged against fellow Muslims.” Under comments, he wrote: “We love death more than you love life.” And his conclusion was that Muslim soldiers be given the option of being released from the military, as conscientious objectors, to decrease what he called “adverse events.”

Tuesday night ABC's Brian Ross highlighted how in a 2007 presentation mass-murdering Army Major Nidal Hasan exposed his radicalism and adherence to Islam over the U.S. Army as he charged “it's getting harder and harder for Muslims in the service to morally justify being in a military that seems constantly engaged against fellow Muslims,” and declared: “We love death more than you love life.”

But neither CBS nor NBC cited those quotes for their viewers as they gave short-shrift to Hasan's remarks in “The Koranic World View As It Relates to Muslims in the U.S. Military,” a slide show disclosed by Dana Priest in Tuesday's Washington Post (click on “Launch Photo Gallery” for Hasan's entire presentation at Walter Reed in June of 2007).

ABC anchor Charles Gibson set up the Ross story: “There is interest now focused on a presentation written by Hasan two years ago that provides insights into his views about Muslims, like himself, serving in the military.”

Is our increasingly urban lifestyle leading us to lose touch with the realities of life and death? World famous wildlife communicator Sir David Attenborough believes it is.

"There's no doubt that we are becoming increasingly divorced from the natural world, there are lots of people who spend their lives in cities and never see a wild thing unless it's a pigeon or maybe a rat, so you lose touch, you lose touch with the rhythms of the natural world, you lose touch with the realities of the natural world," he said.

"I don't want to get too pretentious but you lose touch with both life and death, with both how life is created and how death is inevitable.

"If you're brought up in the countryside - and I wasn't - but if you were you would know those things on a daily basis, you see life and death in the farm yard."

Sir David also cites the increasing of the world's population as a big factor in the decreasing size of the natural world.

Death of God Theology

In the 1960s, DOG, or "Death of God," theology became a buzzword. Completely missing the point of Harvard University's Harvey Cox in his popular book The Secular City, people jumped on the idea that DOG theology meant that what would come to be called "secular humanism" had triumphed. Conservative clergy heaped great scorn on those who even tried to understand what the so-called "DOG scholars" were trying to say.

Time magazine brought the issue to the front burner of public opinion when they placed Thomas Altizer of Emory University squarely in the hot seat. The bold cover story with the words "Is God Dead?" made Altizer a household name.

Most scholars who contributed to Death of God theology were trying to make an important point.

the crucifixion symbolized the end of the historical idea that God was just "out there" somewhere, uninvolved.

The phrase "death of God" represented more a new understanding of God, or of the concept of God, than the destruction thereof.
