Angry Pakistani tribesmen attack Taliban after bombing

The mounting militant threat prompted the government to convene a closed joint session of the two-chambered parliament for a briefing by intelligence officials on internal security.

The parliamentarians are due to begin debate on the situation after Pakistan's newly appointed intelligence chief briefed them this week on the militant threat.

The growing violence comes amidst a stepped-up campaign by the United States against militant targets inside Pakistan

Pakistan tribes raze Taliban houses after bombing

KOHAT, Pakistan - Angry Pakistani tribesmen traded fire with Taliban militants and demolished their houses in a northwestern tribal region after a car suicide attack killed at least 30 people, residents said on Saturday.

Television channels put the death toll at as high as 70.

The bomber drove his explosive-laden car into the middle of a tribal council meeting in Orakzai tribal region on Friday where hundreds of tribesmen were discussing a government-backed plan to raise a lashkar or tribal militia to force militants out of the region.

"Everyone is angry and upset here. The tribesmen attacked houses of the Taliban in Khadizai after the bombing. Two houses have been demolished," Noorzad Orakzai, a resident of the Khadizai area where attack took place, told Reuters by telephone.

The attack in Orakzai came a day after a suicide blast inside the heavily guarded police headquarters in the capital Islamabad in which eight policemen were wounded.

the rising civilian death toll and the decaying economy proved a profitable recipe for the Taliban, who recruited significant numbers of new fighters.

They also won the sympathy of Afghans

This last surge, little noted by the media, failed miserably, but Washington is now planning another one, even as Afghanistan slips away. More boots on the ground, though, will do little to address the real causes of this country's unfolding tragedy.

Iraqi forces launched a major hunt today for Al-Qaeda gunmen in the restive province of Diyala as the death toll rose to 35 from an ambush of police in an orchard.

Soldiers backed by commandos are sweeping the area, interior ministry spokesman Brigadier General Abdel Karim Khalaf said in the wake of Wednesday's attack, one of the deadliest against police in recent months despite massive military crackdowns in the region.

"We have a major operation underway in the area after Al-Qaeda ambushed the policemen. Army, police commandos and rapid action groups have joined a search for the attackers," Khalaf told AFP.

The attackers shot dead 12 policemen and eight anti-Qaeda fighters, according to an initial toll given by a security official.

Town mayor Naif Abdullah said on Thursday that another 15 wounded policemen were declared dead on arrival at a hospital in Baghdad.

Among those killed were allied fighters of the Sahwa (Awakening Council) group who are battling Al-Qaeda in the region.

Sea eagles blamed for lamb deaths

Scottish farmers in the north-west Highlands claim sea eagles, which have been reintroduced to the area, have killed more than 200 lambs.

The RSPB examined one nest but said it was unlikely the birds were responsible for all the deaths.

Although sea eagles have taken several lambs in the past, the farmers say this year's death toll is much worse.

Carcases of lambs have reportedly been examined by vets and found to have talon damage and injuries caused by being dropped from a height.

Another crofter described going close to a sea eagle's nest and finding what he described as a sheep's graveyard.

The farmers want help to deal with the situation but say not much has been forthcoming.

there are only three breeding pairs of sea eagle in the Gairloch area, and it would be highly unlikely the birds were responsible for the loss of all of the lambs.

There is no doubt that they will take lambs, but usually dead or weak ones, and we've never heard of it being done on this scale."

The water had reached 3 feet deep in Jeffrey Jordan's Galveston living room by the time police arrived to save him and his family.

The death toll so far was low, and rescuers were hoping they could keep it from rising. Only four deaths were blamed on the storm — two in Louisiana, and two in Texas, and no crews had reported finding bodies in inundated homes.

Some coastal residents waded through chest-deep water with their belongings and children in their arms to get to safety Saturday. Military helicopters loaded others carrying plastic bags and pets in their arms and brought them to dry ground.

"What's really frustrating is that we can't get to them," Galveston police officer Tommie Mafrei said.

Just 7 years ago on this very day September 11 one of the biggest islam terror attack happened in downtown New York ruining the World Trade Center with 2 airplains. As the towers pancaked hundreds of people tried to jump out to save their lives but they could not. The 3rd airplane aimed at the White House was led away by the brave passengers who tried to hinder the muslim terrorists. They also lost their lives. There was a 4th airplane that flew into the pentagon causing a fire. All these resulted 2974 death and 24 missing people according to the official death toll released.

An active member of the tribal council, Mehmood Jan, was later killed along with his son. It is believed he was killed by militants for opposing them.

At least 25 people were killed and more than 50 others injured Wednesday when some unidentified persons threw hand grenades in a mosque during evening prayers at Banai in Maskeni area of Dir Lower district in Pakistan’s troubled North West Frontier Province

Eyewitness said that several of the injured were in a critical condition and death toll might go up. They said the victims also included children. A resident of the area said three grenades were thrown in the mosque when people were offering ‘Travih’ — special prayers after in the evening during the holy month of Ramadan.

District Police Officer Fida Hussain

quoted the injured as saying that firing followed the grenade blasts. The area where the incident occurred shares border with the war-ravaged Afghanistan and the restive Bajaur Agency where the Pakistani security forces have launched an operation against militants.

In one of the worst hurricane seasons in living memory, Haiti faces the threat of yet more extreme weather as Hurricane Ike hurtles towards it with winds already blasting at above 120mph. Haitians continued to battle with the aftermath of tropical storm Hanna. As flood waters drained away yesterday, the true death toll suffered by the Caribbean nation was revealed. In the port city of Gonaives alone, the bodies of 495 storm victims were found, bringing the official count of the dead to 529. An estimated 600,000 people are still unreachable and without food.

Meanwhile floodwaters receded in eastern India, where up to 15,000 people are said to have returned to their homes, despite fresh warnings that more heavy rain is expected. The numbers displaced by the floods – which were caused by a collapsed flood wall in Nepal three weeks ago – have now reached 900,000.

At least a dozen members of GFA-related churches have been murdered, but no one knows the overall death toll.

"The Christians in Orissa have fled for their lives into the forests," GFA President K.P. Yohannan said, "and some have been in hiding for three days without food or water.

Afghanistan's cabinet has demanded a change in the rules governing international troops in the country, after more than 90 civilians were killed in US-led air attacks last week.

the UN's special representative in Afghanistan, said: "Investigations by UNAMA found convincing evidence, based on the testimony of eyewitnesses and others, that some 90 civilians were killed, including 60 children, 15 women and 15 men."

Based on UN investigations, it is the highest civilian death toll from international military action since US-led forces invaded in 2001 to remove the Taliban government.

Afghan ministers during Monday's cabinet meeting said

President Hamid Karzai strongly condemned on Saturday a coalition airstrike that he said killed up to 95 Afghans — including 50 children — in a village in western Afghanistan on Friday, and said his government would be announcing measures to prevent the loss of civilian life in the future.

Government officials who traveled to the village of Azizabad in Herat Province on Saturday said the death toll had risen to 95 from 76, making it one of the deadliest airstrikes on civilians in nearly seven years of war.

“This puts us in a very difficult position,” said a government official, who asked not to be identified

“It provides propaganda to the Taliban, and if they don’t take responsibility, it actually helps the Taliban.”

The account of Friday’s airstrike by Afghan officials conflicted with that of the United States military, which said that coalition forces had come under attack in Azizabad,

and had called in an airstrike that killed 25 militants,

and five civilians.

Studies of the windmills' death-dealing effects on birds have put the kill rate at 1,700 to 4,700 birds per year. Protected raptors like golden eagles, red-tailed hawks, burrowing owls and American kestrels have been especially vulnerable. The most recent study shows as many as 2,200 individuals of these four species are killed annually -- despite efforts to reduce the toll.

Survivors in Georgia Tell of Ethnic Killings

Much remains unknown. Because journalists have only limited access to Russian-controlled areas, most of the victims interviewed have been ethnic Georgians. The only access for foreign journalists to the Russian-controlled areas has been with Russian minders, impeding efforts to assess the severity of the damage in the north.

The death tolls do not appear to be what each side is claiming.

Russia has said that 2,000 civilians were killed by Georgian troops. But in three hospitals visited by a reporter in Vladikavkaz, the Russian city that has taken most of the wounded, only 259 patients were being treated, suggesting a far lower death toll, since in most conflicts far more people are wounded than killed.

Georgians are saying 213 soldiers and civilians were killed in the fighting. But Georgia has blocked access to morgues, a precaution to protect journalists from angry families, said Alexander Kvitashvili, the country’s health minister.
