Marci Hamilton, a professor at Cardozo Law School, who writes about religious issues, said the case may test Oregon's religious freedom laws and may prompt other states to re-examine their spiritual healing laws.

"There was a time when we were willing to permit these children to be lost, but there are increasingly more prosecutions and lawsuits," she said. "Children should not be permitted to be the testing ground for their parents' faith or secular views if it's going to result in their death."

The prosecution of an Oregon couple who allegedly tried to heal their dying son with prayer has focused attention on laws that, in some cases, allow parents to treat their children with faith.

Jeffrey Dean Beagley, 50, and Marci Rae Beagley, 46, pleaded not guilty on Friday to criminally negligent homicide charges in the death of their son, 16-year-old Neil Jeffrey Beagley.

Neil died June 17 from complications of a urinary tract blockage, according to medical examiners. The condition, which doctors say is easily treatable, caused kidney and heart failure.

The Beagleys belong to a religious sect known as the Followers of Christ Church, which rejects medical treatment and, instead, relies on prayer. Several relatives who were with Neil Beagley at the time of his death told police that he had refused medical care, according to the Gladstone, Ore., police.

Marci Beagley declined to comment when reached at her Oregon City home, Monday.

Attorneys for the Beagleys could not be reached for comment

Michelle Obama, Associate Dean of Student Services and Director of the University Community Service Center, hopes bringing issues like this to campus will open a dialogue between members of the University community and the broader community.

Still, there's something hinky about SUSA's polling in Minnesota. It's been in wild disagreement with most other polls. Coleman points to SUSA's numbers, but I doubt that -- in his little heart of hearts -- he finds much comfort in them.

"DFL" is Democratic-Farmer-Labor party, BTW. The official name of the state Democratic party.

DFL U.S. Senate candidate Al Franken has moved into his first solid lead over incumbent Republican Norm Coleman, according to a new Star Tribune Minnesota Poll.

The survey, conducted Tuesday through Thursday by Princeton Survey Research Associates International among 1,084 likely Minnesota voters, shows Franken leading Coleman 43 to 34 percent. Independence Party candidate Dean Barkley is supported by 18 percent of respondents.

Franken’s lead is outside the poll’s margin of sampling error, plus or minus 3.7 points.

As an Alaskan one point she made was really wrong. She claimed she had the PFD divest itself from Sudan and other rogue states. She is incorrect. It was done before she was in office, while Frank Murkowski was governor. Also she would have not been able to do that on her own, the board that runs the PFD would actually have done it. There are many other facts she bent about Alaska. NPR should spend some more time learning about her tenure here in Alaska.

On the contrary: according to Congressional Quarterly, which measures how often each member votes in accordance with or at variance from the majority of his own party, Obama has compiled one of the most partisan of all voting records.

the average Senator voted with his own party 84 percent of the time; Obama voted with his party 96 percent of the time. In the prior two years, his number was 95 percent, making him the fourth most partisan member of the Senate.

according to the National Journal, Obama’s voting record made him “the most liberal Senator.”

according to Americans for Democratic Action (ADA), the dean of liberal advocacy groups, Obama voted “right” 90 percent of the time.

If we discount his absences, Obama voted to ADA’s approval more than 98 percent of the time.

A small Christian school in Oregon has suspended four students who confessed to hanging a cardboard Barack Obama effigy from a tree on campus, ABC News reports. Few students saw the cutout, which was hastily removed after a faculty member found it last week. It was an "abhorrent act" that does not reflect the institution, the president of George Fox University said.

Robin Baker also wrote an apology to Obama, whose campaign says they have otherwise had “a very positive response” in the state. A dean says the incident highlights the need for “diversity training.” The effigy was found with a sign reading “Act Six Reject,” a reference to a scholarship awarded to 17 students, mostly minorities, on the predominantly white campus in northwestern Newberg.

What I am about to say probably resonates with alot of people who are against fascist government wars, especially those who are active, or have been active, in fighting whichever cause they believe in. I've become severely cynical about protesting, for instance, for a couple reasons. First, the police show up and film you and take your picture and it's generally intrusive on your privacy. They already know who I am, and they're not learning anything new by filming me several different times. That's one thing, but I learned to get past that. Certain privacies apparently must be discarded to show public support for peace and freedom...

The second reason I cannot go to anti war protests any more is because they are always infested with communists, at least in Los Angeles where I live. I mean, it's out of control.

WASHINGTON - The fallout from the vote against a bailout package for the U.S. financial system may well be lasting pain for the economy.

The House's stunning defeat of a $700 billion package urgently championed by President Bush, sent shock waves through Capitol Hill, the trading floors on Wall Street and the Oval Office on Monday.

"An economic 9/11," warned Terry Connelly, dean of Golden Gate University's Ageno School of Business, of the potential fallout. As the package went down, panicked investors caused the Dow Jones industrials to nosedive nearly 780 points in their largest one-day point drop ever. Markets across Asia fell sharply Tuesday in the wake of the Wall Street downdraft.

"Undoubtedly, both businesses and consumers will run for cover. They will clam up," said economist Ken Mayland, president of ClearView Economics. "The snowball hitting the economy will pick up speed and gather mass."

Marilee Jones, dean of admissions at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and a national leader in the admissions reform movement, resigned after the university confirmed that she had claimed academic degrees she never earned, MIT announced Thursday.

Jones, who came to MIT in 1979 for an entry-level admissions position and rose through the ranks to become dean in 1997, has claimed at various points to hold degrees from Albany Medical College, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Union College, said Patti Richards, a university spokeswoman. Upon looking into a tip received early last week that Jones’ academic credentials were questionable, the Office of the Dean for Undergraduate Education was unable to confirm that she had received any of those degrees, Richards said. When confronted, Jones admitted that she had misrepresented her academic background.
