The more exposure, the more hairs snap off, and of course now we are beginning to see the effects of the 'ipod syndrome' where the volume is maxed out. US researchers have used gene therapy to regrow the tiny hairs in the inner ear of mice, which they say might lead to new ways of restoring hearing loss in humans.

Dr John Brigande and colleagues at Oregon Health and Science University report their findings in today's issue of Nature.

Sensory hair cells inside the cochlea, the auditory portion of the inner ear, convert sound waves into electrical impulses that are delivered to the brain.

The loss of these minute hairs, or the nerves that control them, is the most common cause of hearing impairment and so-called nerve deafness.

In most cases, damaged hair cells do not regrow in mature humans.

"Our work shows that it is possible to produce functional auditory hair cells in the mammalian cochlea.

it remains to be determined whether gene transfer into a deaf mouse will lead to the production of healthy cells that enable hearing

we have made an important step toward defining an approach that may lead to therapeutic intervention for hearing loss."

A group at the UW has developed software that for the first time enables deaf and hard-of-hearing Americans to use sign language over a mobile phone.

Computer science doctoral student Anna Cavender, who learned sign language after joining the MobileASL group, demonstrates the device. Users can hold the phone in front of them and sign with one hand, but most people prefer to set the phone on a table and sign with both hands.

This is the first time two-way real-time video communication has been demonstrated over cell phones in the United States

For mobile communication, deaf people now communicate by cell phone using text messages. "But the point is you want to be able to communicate in your native language," Riskin said. "For deaf people that's American Sign Language."

When John McCain was asked to comment on Jerome Corsi's work of Obama-hating fiction, McCain told the reporter, "gotta keep your sense of humor." This caused an uproar, so McCain's spokeswoman said he never heard the question. So he's either politically tone deaf or going deaf? Good save. [CNN]

CHICAGO _ With a twitch of a muscle, the Chinese concave-eared torrent frog brushes off the sounds of thundering rivers, focusing on the one thing that really matters:

The siren song of the opposite sex.

The rare frog is the only animal known to be able to turn a deaf ear to distracting noises while enhancing the calls of its own kind, according to a study published Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science.

When the frog is calling for a mate, a piece of cartilage in its Eustachian tubes _ the canals that connect the ears with the mouth _ largely blocks out distracting low-frequency sounds like rushing water. Scientists hope their discovery may lead to improved hearing aids.

"This probably is the only example we know of in the animal kingdom with this unusual adaptation," said Albert Feng, professor of molecular and integrative physiology at the University of Illinois and one of the study's lead authors.

The glove senses movements of the hand and fingers, and a computer turns those signals into letters and words. Future versions will also translate sign language to speech.

There are more than 28 million deaf and hard-of-hearing Americans, yet there are still communication barriers between the deaf and the hearing world. Now, a new technology is breaking sound barriers and lending a helping hand to the hearing impaired.

Communication is a challenge that electrical engineers are now helping the hearing impaired overcome, with an electronic glove that turns American Sign Language gestures into text.

"What it does is detects the position of the fingers and the position of the hand so it translates positions of fingers into letters,"

the high-tech glove will bridge the communication gap between the deaf and hearing -- a sure sign of the times.

Revivalist stirring controversy

clipper's remarks: The bible clearly states that when Jesus walked the earth he healed many of "every affliction". The early disciples have recorded in the bible of people who where healed and raised from the dead. Therefore it is or at least was a ministry preformed by both Jesus and his early disciples.

The main focus of Jesus' ministry as well as the early disciples was the 'preaching of the kingdom of God' and not the ministry of healing. Healing came as a result of seeking Jesus or the kingdom of God.

Like this article states Jesus did warn of many false prophets who would arise preforming miracles in attempts to mislead and deceive.

It was interesting to read in this article that of all the people who were reportedly healed at this 'revival' Mr Bentley only produced a list of 15 people who could verify such healing. And yet thousands have attended the revival.

Personally I believe God can heal anyone if He chooses to but the bible says 'Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousne

So do hundreds of thousands of people who have visited his raucous revival meeting, now in its third month and broadcast nightly from a huge tent in the middle of Florida.
