Dead Sea Scrolls getting digitized

JERUSALEM (CNN) -- More than 2,000 years after they were written, the Dead Sea Scrolls are going digital

The high-tech initiative, announced Wednesday, will also reveal text that was not visible to the naked eye.

Over the next two years, the Israel Antiquities Authority will digitally photograph and scan every bit of crumbling parchment and papyrus that makes up the scrolls, which include the oldest written record of the Bible's Old Testament.

The images eventually will be posted on the Internet for anyone to see.

"These are the earliest copies of the Bible ever found," said Pnina Shor, head of treatment and conservation at the Antiquities Authority.

"Just by applying the latest infrared technologies and shooting at very high detail, lots of resolution, we are already opening up new characters from the scrolls that are either extremely indistinct or you just couldn't see them before," said Simon Tanner, director of King's Digital Consultancy Services.

A jar of yummy Larval Old Ones in Ichor:

several pounds of fresh mushrooms
medium or large canning jar, with lid
salt (optional)
microwave oven
pressure cooker

This is a good recipe for storing mushrooms if your grocery gets stuck with a bunch of aging mushrooms and puts them on sale dead cheap. Mushrooms with large rounded heads look creepiest. Portobellos are good as long as their telltale edges don't show.

The trick is that only the first quarter-inch or so of the mushrooms will be visible through the liquid they throw off, so what you get is a jar of nearly-opaque inky fluid filled with pallid, mottled, suggestively rounded shapes pressed against the glass. It really does look creepy. If you want, you can add a label saying Larval Old Ones, Preserved in Their Ichor, or similar sentiments.

When you get tired of your artifact, the mushrooms in their juice can be used in cream of mushroom soup, added to pot roast or London broil, or whatever you please.

At least 3 killed in Coast Guard helicopter crash

HONOLULU - An official says at least three U.S. Coast Guard crewmembers were killed when their helicopter crashed in waters about five miles south of Honolulu, and another crewmember is missing.

Spokesman Lt. John Titchen says the search continues Friday for the remaining crewmember. He says the Coast Guard release the names or ranks of the dead crewmembers for another day.

The helicopter crashed at 8:15 p.m. Thursday as the crew was conducting search and rescue drills with a 47-foot motor lifeboat.

Here was Chip as I found him: curled up, cold, appearing to be dead, in the middle of a trail in the Olympics.

Over the next hour, as I held him in my hand, he warmed up and started to move. Here he is nestled in my fleece hat. He’s just a few weeks old ... eyes still closed, very immature.

What to do with a chipmunk on a 15 mile hike? Especially a chipmunk that, now warmed up, is hungry and trying to nurse.

I smashed up some nuts and dried fruit from my trail mix, mixed it with water, and fed it to the eager baby with a syringe from my first aid kit.

Needing my hands free for the hike, I found the perfect spot for Chip ... I emptied the water from my Nalgene bottle, put the fleece hat in the bottom to make a nice bed, and snuggled him inside. He had a good view of the rest of the hike, though it was a bit tinted ...

Back home, he gets his first real meal of chipmunk-appropriate formula.

In less than a week, his eyes are open!

As the days go by, he gets more and more mature.

A Mayfair man took his own life last night after he fatally shot his former girlfriend and then spent four hours barricaded in an aquaintance's apartment, police said.

They found Osborn dead from a bullet wound to the head.

Animal neglect charges dropped

James Louis Denoyer, 52, of Westport pleaded guilty Wednesday to one count of improper disposal of a dead animal. The 36 counts of felony animal neglect were dismissed as part of a plea deal.

This concludes the December 2005 saga of 36 malnourished and neglected horses seized from Denoyer's property in the Westport area. As part of the plea, Denoyer agreed to own no more than four horses in the future, to keep county authorities apprised of where they are kept, to have a licensed veterinarian inspect them every three months sending reports to authorities, as well as semi-annual inspections by a county veterinarian.

It wasn’t just MSNBC’s anchors who were struggling to respond. On the floor of the convention center, a visibly depressed Andrea Mitchell interviewed a beaming Rudy Giuliani about Palin’s speech. Some context: Last week, reporting from among the Democratic delegates at Invesco Field, Mitchell relayed the reaction of the delegates to some of Obama’s best lines, literally shouting, “Whooee! Whooee!” into the camera.

But there would be no sharing in the Republican delegates’ joy over Palin’s speech for Mitchell. Instead, after her interview with Rudy was over (sample question: “And you don’t think she’s vulnerable on the size and scale of her executive experience and the brevity of her political experience?”), she stared dead-eyed into the camera and said, “The war has begun.”

Maybe someday, the media’s campaign to bury Sarah Palin will yield something more substantial than the smears and innuendo we’ve seen so far

Bulls surprise Tenby residents with spirited run.

Two bulls have run amok at a seaside resort tossing one person in the air and leaving another who jumped out of their way clinging to a cliff edge.

The animals escaped from a trailer near Tenby harbour in Pembrokeshire after being transported from Caldey Island.

Police said the "irate and aggressive" bulls were on the loose for several hours before they were eventually shot dead by marksmen.

Officers said it was fortunate that no one was seriously injured.

With the help of a vet the bulls were contained within temporary fencing at a footpath near the lifeboat stations but escaped again.

"Following this, a member of the public who was in the area had to jump over a wall in order to avoid the bulls, and officers had to rescue this person who was hanging over rocks," said police.

"Another person wasn't so fortunate, and one of the bulls confronted them and tossed them into the air."

This same afternoon on MSNBC after a segment with NBC's Chuck Todd, Republican consultant Mike Murphy and Noonan were captured on still-live microphones ridiculing McCain's running mate.

With that leak, Noonan's credibility as a columnist was severely damaged if not destroyed, a fact she seems to realize even as she becomes the first casualty as a long held gentleman's agreement among journalists to overlook each others biases, faults, mistakes and lies has been ripped apart. The media now no longer looks after their own, and naked partisanship is now the order of the day.

After being exposed, Noonan wrote that she was "mugged by the nature of modern media," which is both absolutely true and utterly irrelevant.

Every indication is that the raw video was leaked directly from an increasingly partisan MSNBC to liberal blog Talking Points Memo.

Ex-boxing champ shot dead in smoking dispute

LONDON (Reuters) - Former British heavyweight boxing champion James Oyebola was shot in the neck in a nightclub after asking a group of men to stop smoking, a court heard Tuesday. Prosecutor Jeremy Donne told the Old Bailey that the boxer died after the "senseless" shooting at the Chateau 6 club in Fulham, west London, in July 2007.

He never regained consciousness after being hit in the neck and leg and died in hospital four days later when doctors switched off his life-support machine.

The Nigerian-born, 6ft 9" boxer won the UK heavyweight title in 1994 and the bronze medal at the 1986 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, where he lost to Lennox Lewis in the semi-finals.

Four men are on trial for his murder: Cyle Carth, 18; Dean Francis, 24; Rene McKoy, 20 and Kanyanta Mulenga, 23, all from south London. They deny murder and affray.
