In a letter published in The Herald newspaper today, Dr Swire said the Libyan government’s admission of guilt for the Lockerbie bombing had allowed its economy to recover while giving the West access to the country’s oil industry.

Colonel Muammar Gaddafi's son has accused relatives of the Lockerbie bombing victims of "trading with the blood of their sons and daughters” in their demands for compensation.

Saif al-Islam al-Gaddafi, who is seen as the leading candidate to succeed his father as Libyan leader, said that the Lockerbie families were "very greedy” during negotiations over payouts for the deaths of loved ones.

Mr Gaddafi also told BBC2’s The Conspiracy Files that the Libyan government had only taken responsibility for Britain’s worst terrorist attack in order to get international sanctions lifted.

“You have to ask the families of the victims,” he said. “The negotiation with them, it was very terrible and very materialistic and was very greedy. They were asking for more money and more money and more money.”

He continued: “I think they were very greedy and I think they were trading with the blood of their sons and daughters.”

Lesbian rights pioneer Del Martin, whose trailblazing activism spanned more than five decades, most recently in the battle for same-sex marriage, died Wednesday, just two months after she made history again by wedding her longtime partner in San Francisco City Hall.

Ms. Martin's crusading began in 1955, during an era in America known more for social conformity than for rebellion, when she co-founded a lesbian social-turned-political organization, Daughters of Bilitis, named after a 19th century book of lesbian love poetry.

This year, on June 16, she and her partner of 55 years, Phyllis Lyon, were legally wed. San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom officiated. Theirs was among the first same-sex nuptials in California.

"Her last act of activism was her most personal - marrying the love of her life,"

Ok, so that’s not going to happen, but John McCain didn’t at all try to hide his flirtation with Hillary Clinton’s supporters who may be, to put it mildly, upset with Barack Obama’s victory. Here’s some text from McCain’s speech last night:

BEIJING - The parents of the Chinese gymnasts are indignant, the International Olympic Committee sounds satisfied and the Beijing Games are almost over. Yet questions persisted Friday about the ages of China's gold-medal women's gymnastics team.

China coach Lu Shanzhen said the parents are "indignant" over persistent questions about their daughters' ages.

"It's not just me. The parents of our athletes are all very indignant," Lu said. "They have faced groundless suspicion. Why aren't they believed? Why are their children suspected? Their parents are very angry."

Earlier this month, the AP found registration lists previously posted on the Web site of the General Administration of Sport of China that showed both He and Yang were too young to compete.

Four of China's six medals could be affected if evidence of cheating is found. In addition to the team gold, He won the gold medal on uneven bars and Yang won bronzes on bars and the all-around.

Paul Newman has finished chemotherapy treatment for cancer and has told his family he wants to die at home.

The Oscar-winning star was pictured being pushed from a New York cancer hospital in a wheelchair looking thin and frail.

It was reported in America that Newman, 83, had only weeks to live and had returned home to his wife Joanne Woodward.

‘Paul didn’t want to die in the hospital,’ a source said. ‘Joanne and his daughters are beside themselves with grief.’

The source, described as a ‘close family friend’ said that the star – who co-owns a motor racing team and has his own salad dressing brand – had spent the past few weeks getting his affairs in order.

It was claimed that some of Newman’s actions had caused tension among of his children.

We need feminism more than ever, not just to address all the myths that have grown up - we're still a long way from living in an equal society, despite girls' much-vaunted success over boys in exams - but to counter the pervasive influence of the commercial sex industry on young women. The stage costumes of female stars, from Kylie Minogue to Aguilera and Spears are an obvious example.

Women's studies has gone out of fashion as a subject at universities, so let's start dealing with these questions in schools, as Dr Ringrose suggests

Right. Tonight I'm home, sitting on a sofa with my daughters who are watching the Olympics. This morning I went out and bought lots of lightweight, quick-drying clothes and other useful travel things, with my assistant Lorraine. (At one point during the clothes-buying part of things Lorraine helpfully said, "Boss, you're still wearing their pants. Why don't you go and change back into your own?" Which seemed like a sensible idea, so I grabbed my jeans and headed back to the changing room, overhearing the sales lady saying, "Is he a professor?" and Lorraine's reply of, "He's a writer. It's the same thing.")

Natural selection, we’re told, is the process by which nature promotes our best qualities. But a look around strains that notion. If nature selects health, beauty, and intelligence, why are most of us far from flawless?

It may be because genes involved in reproduction work against themselves in opposite sexes across generations, says biologist Katharina Foerster at the University of Edinburgh. In her study of eight generations of red deer in Scotland, she noticed a curious pattern: The most prolific male deer sired daughters that tended to have fewer offspring, while the worst male breeders (the deer equivalent of ugly) fathered females that had more offspring. This is evidence, Foerster says, of sexually antagonistic genes. The same gene that makes a buck sexually successful can leave his daughter behind.

Egyptian scientists are to carry out DNA tests on two mummified foetuses found in the tomb of Tutankhamun to determine whether they are daughters of the young pharaoh, Egypt's supreme council of antiquities said yesterday. The foetuses, discovered in the tomb in Luxor in 1922, may be his stillborn children.

Until recently there had been no archaeological indication that the pharaoh who died more than 3,000 years ago aged about 19, left any offspring. Zahi Hawass, the head of the Egyptian antiquities, said the tests will also try to determine Tutankhamun's family lineage, a source of ambiguity among many Egyptologists.

GUANTÁNAMO BAY, Cuba — Salim Ahmed Hamdan, the convicted former driver for Osama bin Laden, was sentenced Thursday to 66 months in prison by the military panel that convicted him of a war crime Wednesday.

The military judge, Capt. Keith J. Allred of the Navy, had already said that he planned to give Mr. Hamdan credit for the 61 months he had been held, meaning that Mr. Hamdan could complete his criminal sentence in five months. After that his fate is unclear, because the Bush administration says that it can hold detainees here until the end of the war on terror.

prosecutors recommended a sentence of at least 30 years and said life may be appropriate.
